My Thai Kitchen: The Thai that Bonds

My Thai Kitchen along Wilson Street in San Juan stands where Jack’s Loft restaurant used to welcome its patrons.  Jack’s Loft retained its second floor dining space while My Thai Kitchen occupies the ground floor to be one of the firsts to serve Thai cuisine in the area.

Vibrant interiors with light pinkish red walls, khaki and white table and chair colors, eye-catching black drawers piled together, and hanging bright lamps make for a winsome and inviting ambience.

One random Sunday dinner treat by mom was spent at My Thai Kitchen.  Heightened by the comfortable interiors, it was a satisfying dinner that got us all talking about the food on the table.

On the Table

Tom Yam Goong PHP 225

Tom Yum is the classic Thai hot and sour soup with shrimps and fragrant herbs.  My Thai Kitchen’s version uses in its broth a lot of aromatic herbs where lemon grass and kaffir lime leaves are distinctly prominent.

Yam Pla Duk Fuu PHP 235

One of the more popular Thai appetizers is the spicy deep-fried catfish.  The fluffy deep fried catfish is often served not on its own but with shredded green mango salad on the side.  Additional accessories are the chopped red chilies, peanuts, onion and a brown tangy dressing.

Satay Moo PHP 165

My Thai Kitchen’s satay or grilled pork skewers are marinated in a semi-spiced peanut sauce.  They serve it with sweet vinegar and peanut dipping sauces that echo nicely with the pork marinade used in grilling.

Pla Meuk Tort Gratiam Prik Thai PHP 280

Squid stir fry with garlic and peppercorns served with sweet and sour vinegar.  Both shobe and I prefer the garlic squid served in other restaurants.  The sweet and sour vinegar compensates for taste a little bit for what the squid lacks.

Thai Red Chicken Curry PHP 275

You have the option to choose either red or green curry in their list of Thai curries and price will vary depending on the meat you prefer.  The choices include beef, chicken, fish fillet, pork, tofu and vegetables and prawns.  We opted to get chicken.  This traditional Thai curry has a fine blend of hot, salty, sweet (probably from the basil) and sour flavors from the curry paste and coconut milk used –and it beautifully seeps into the lightly stir-fried chicken, eggplant, red and green bell peppers, carrot and onion to make for an irresistible sauce.

Khap Bat Bpuu PHP 250

Crabmeat Fried Rice served with fried egg on top and garnished with slices of cucumber and tomato.  Rice, approved with thumbs up by my mom and Bubba, was generously sprinkled with toasted garlic and fair amount of crabmeat –I would have favored more crabmeat.

Hoi Lai Pad Nam Prik Pao PHP 195

Stir fried clams with chilies and Thai basil.  The clams were a little overcooked but since they’re very small, it still wasn’t that tough to chew.  There’s a roasted flavor to the brown chili sauce that will make you want to order a cup of plain rice to better enjoy its grasp of sweet and tender spice.

Gai Yang PHP 270

Thai style grilled boneless chicken is one of the favorites on the table.  The texture outside with the barbecue marinade is tasty while some parts of the skin are crispy.  Chicken meat was perfectly cooked and not rubbery or dry.  The sweet and sour sauce on the side adds a bit of acidity into the dish that gives it a perky taste.

A few Thai restaurants in the city have price range that might be rather cheaper than My Thai Kitchen but their price range is still affordable for a comfortable Thai dining experience.

My Thai Kitchen transcends the ordinary by offering a combination of delicious and affordable Thai dishes.  Get your taste buds tingling slightly with their faintly modern take on the cuisine.

Luna Resto Bar

Hannah and Vince invited friends from the online community in the recent launch of the hottest upcoming restaurant bar in San Juan.  Luna Resto-Bar is located right smack in the busy street of Wilson –which is now becoming a booming foodie town as well.

On the Table

Luna Nachos PHP 220

Fried tortilla chips loaded with scrumptious chorizo, chili con carne, cheese and Luna’s pimiento mayo.  This was a great appetizer and gathered a lot of raves from the big group.

Paella de Carne PHP 200

My favorite part of the paella is the toasted crunchy crust at the bottom of the pan.  I love scraping it off and munching on the toasty flavorful rice!  Toppings were generous.

Luna Sisig PHP 195

Size is good to share –really good bar chow for a drinking group!

Flaming Chicken Wings PHP 240

This was also a surefire hit on the table.

Feng Wei Wee

As soon as we entered Feng Wei Wee on a rainy Tuesday evening, we felt like walking into a Binondo restaurant minus the clatter and noise.  Feng Wei Wee is a small restaurant along Wilson St. that serves authentic Taiwanese cuisine.  They have over 30 dishes to choose from daily.

Like a Binondo hole in the wall restos, it’s a cafeteria-style eatery where the choices of viands are in front of you in a glass display.  Notable however is the very clean counter top as well as spotless tables.  One easily gets a whiff of the fragrantly delectable Chinese dishes.

This part of San Juan is starting to be a haven of a lot of good food finds, with the spurt of numerous restaurants.  Wilson, P. Guevarra and Jose Abad Santos streets are becoming more and more vibrant with a German deli, handful of Chinese hole in the wall finds, wine bars, burrito bar and grill restaurants.

On the Table

Stir Fried Cailan PHP 90

This dish brings back memories of eating out with my dad on Binondo trips, where he usually parks far from where we are supposed to go.  I think this dish is also available in Little Store in Jose Abad Santos in the same neighborhood.

Ang Sho Ba PHP 120

Deep-fried red breaded pork belly that I found a bit oily during our visit

Tausi Oyster PHP 150

It was simple yet flavorful.  A different take to enjoy oyster not in a cake.

Soy Chicken with Chorizo PHP 120

Braised Pork Rice PHP 50

Plain Rice (1 & half) PHP 45

Sagu Milk Tea PHP 80

Feng Wei Wee is suitable when there is a craving for Taiwanese cuisine without the need to travel far or break the budget -simple presentation, simple dining can simply satisfy.  Most viands are pleasing to the palate and ideal with a hot bowl of rice.

House of Lasagna

After ordering our usual “to go” from Ristras, we crossed the street to the House of Lasagna.  I wanted to add something different to our familiar take-home meal.

Bubba likes lasagnas a lot (hint: cheese) and the restaurant has always piqued our curiosity.  We haven’t found the time to stop by because the signage confuses us somewhat.  The signage says, “House of Lasagna” and on the second line, “Cakes and Pastries.”

Inside are yellow painted walls and wooden tables and chair.  It’s a pretty simple set-up with a cozy homey ambience.  There’s a small counter at the end of the room and cake display.

Beef Lasagna PHP 180

We ordered a single serving of beef lasagna to go.  Both Bubba and I agreed that it was delish.  The pasta was cooked al dente.  It was firm but soft to the bite.  It had plump layers of flavor.  I find lasagnas generally the same wherever we order but I remember the taste of this one significantly.  The tomato sauce, beef and other ingredients enveloped in between the lasagna sheets has a more sophisticated taste than the usual fare.

SPAS Friends at Hong Yang Shabu Shabu

Saturday Night, I was happy to finally see my St. Peter friends again.  The last time we met was back in December 2006.  Bubba and I were just dating then (I was 15 lbs heavier and HE was 15 lbs lighter).  The group had dinner at Gerry’s Grill in Greenhills and went to Zirkoh afterwards.  That was my first time at a comedy club.

 (December 2006)

Reminiscing, I remember that Bubba and I became hungry (again) at some point and decided to go to Caltex Star Mart to buy some chips and drinks.  We walked to the car parked across, popped the trunk and sat there munching on our goodies… we also ate the Godiva chocolates that I brought.  We had a very short but nice bonding time under the night sky before returning to Zirkoh.

During that reunion, the only one missing in action was Roselene.  This time, unfortunately, Joycee, Sandy, Tere, Reagan and Roselene couldn’t make it.  Nevertheless, Christine, JM, Harold, Gin, Marie and I all met and bonded over Shabu Shabu.

 (July 11, 2009)

It was my first time at Hong Yang (Red Sun) Shabu Shabu restaurant and I was taken aback by the huge spread in front of me.  It’s an all-you-can-eat hot pot and grill place.  Different meat cuts, seafood, vegetables, innards, sauces are available at the buffet counter.  Each table has individual hotpots and grill where you can cook your picks.

Total damage per head was about PHP 570.  Drinks are bottomless.  JM and Harold ate to their heart’s content.  Harold is now a student at CCAC studying culinary arts so Tin and Gin had him cook their food (haha).

Everyone updated everyone on each other’s lives including people we know from school.  This group is the friends I grew up with, Prep until High 1.  I transferred school after Freshman High and their friendship is what I extremely missed.  We reminisced how the group got together as well as the dozens of catfights we got ourselves into.  Tin-tin reminded me of “little Grade 3 me” standing on top of the table/chair and dancing and other so embarrassing moments –the adolescent stage haha.

We recalled our grade school and high school crushes, visits to the guidance counselor and principal’s office, cutting classes, girl fights and basically all the high school junk and drama.  It felt good to be in touch again with how I was in my past.  It felt like being visited by 3 Christmas ghosts.

With busy schedule and geographical blah, it’s hard to find a perfect time to meet.  We all agree to meet once every month or at least every 2 months.  JM’s birthday is coming up (July 22) and we might meet again during his birthday week.  It will really be great to have this regularly.

Dita Sandico Ong, Neo Spa and Harbour Garden

Any mid-week break is embraced in my book.  Unfortunately, it was raining all day yesterday.  The holiday was still well spent paying a short visit at Dita Sandico Ong boutique and getting a Swedish massage @ Neo Spa.

Backtracking a little, Tuesday evening was spent at Harbour Garden, Sofitel for the Philippine Chinese Friendship Day or at least I think that was what it was.  One presentation was really interesting with glowing lights and bouncing people.

We used to frequent Neo Spa at their Fort branch but this is the first time I’m trying out Neo Spa in their Wilson branch.  I dropped by last year around Christmas time to get Spa Gift Certificates to be given as Christmas gifts.  They have it on this cute square plastic packaging –really nice and it connotes peace and clarity.

Unfortunately, the masseuses at their Fort branch are so much better than the Greenhills branch.  Facilities are better too.  I don’t know if I’ll ever give Neo Spa greenhills branch a shot again but I’m definitely looking forward to revisiting their Fort branch at the Net One building.  You can book their couple room ahead of time for your convenience.  For Wilson spas, we also frequent Clark Hatch (now Gold’s Gym), Ahavia, and Chiva Som –being the most consistent of the three.

Dita Sandico Ong is the trendy wrap artiste.  She uses banana and other indigenous plant fibers imaginatively interwoven with traditional and ethnic Filipino fabric.  Before heading to Neo Spa, I stopped by her store to check out her latest designs.  I eyed a pair of flats but CW beat me to the punch and bought it for me (thanks Bubba!).  It’s so cute! I finally have something to replace my oh-so-worn out Charles and Keith flats that I’ve been sporting around since last year.

I wanted to buy a neckpiece (love vintage type collars) with a flower design that doubles as a visor but I saved it for another day.  Her line is available at Wilson, Greenhills, Rustan’s Makati, EDSA Shangri-la, Alabang, and Cebu.

Ahavia

There is a newly opened wellness spa along Wilson St going to Shaw.  It had its soft opening on April 20 and we were there on their second night of operation.

April 21.  We had dinner first at Mickey’s Deli along Jupiter Street before trooping to the ABS-CBN Kapamilya Premiere at the A-Venue.  The trade event ended past 10pm but it was really fun to watch Pokwang, who was supporting an Eiffel tower headpiece.  Her comedy made me forget the time.

On our way home, we saw the Ahavia signage finally lit up.  I suddenly had the urge to treat CW for a massage even if it’s only a Monday night.  The guard assisted us through parking inside the unpaved ground.  One of the owners welcomed us and showed us inside where we met the two other partners at the reception area.  It’s close to 11pm but they were still very chirpy.  The spa is actually a house (by one of the owners, I think he said his name was JP) converted to low-lighted wellness center. I wanted to get a full body massage but the girl owner suggested that I get a body scrub (I must have looked like I didn’t take a bath that morning) since it has also a massage technique to it so I conceded to get one.  CW on the other hand got a 2-hr massage.

Ginger Body Scrub PHP 799

Being only on 2nd day of operation, naturally there’d be kinks and the owners gracefully admitted to this.  The shower heater didn’t work immediately.  After the body scrub, I had to walk (shaking) through a cold room to the shower to rinse off, which is new to me because when I get a body scrub from other spas, the “staff” usually rinses me off in the same room.  They rinse off the scrub, I don’t.  Not that I want to be a Cleopatra, but I actually paid for a service. The ginger scrub smelled nice and expensive and it soothed my tired mind.  I love the supple feeling it left on my skin too.  I took a bath the next day (do not contest, I did!) and I still smelled a hint of the scrub, which gave me a refreshed feeling throughout the day.

Full Body Massage PHP 599

CW was ok with the massage (he fell asleep) but suggested it could be harder.  The masseuse’ “hardest” was still weak.   The review is too general because they didn’t have a brochure yet that I could take home.  I cannot describe more the different types of scrubs they have or further details other than the actual experience.  I wasn’t able to take notes either since my body goes to safe mode and was ready to rest at 11pm.   We plan to visit Ahavia and give it a try again within this month or probably after the Hong Kong trip on the first weekend of June.

New Bombay

As you enter the glass door, first thing one will notice is the ethnic Indian flair displayed on the wall in this 2-floor restaurant.  The chairs and tables are black with gold details.

It was just that yellow rice.  There wasn’t much flavor in it nor did it smell like it had saffron.  But I liked that they garnished the rice with dried prunes and apricots.
