It’s All in the Detalle Bar and Kitchen, Ortigas

It was someone’s birthday. I wasn’t planning to eat that evening being on my after-6 diet but this friend of mine wanted to celebrate and called me last minute. I was actually at the gym trying to work out and tire myself so I can just go right to bed afterwards. I seriously didn’t want to eat supper (so informal!) but I didn’t want to rain on his parade so I conceded. He has ruined my diet twice after this initial salvo saying that there’s no after-6pm diet when he’s around. Sigh, it’s so hard to say no to friends… and by that, I mean the food.

I’ve been to Detalle once to grab a late-night drink with ST and JM. I’ve been meaning to eat here but it’s closed during lunch hours. Detalle occupied the building that Taverna Verde vacated, which I used to frequent.  The industrial-style redesign is heavy on wood elements and steel.

It’s a chill place to hang out and bond with friends. The enclosed area on the ground floor is calmer compared to the open 2nd floor, veranda-type with loud chatter, booming music and fresh air.

I initially found it slightly weird to be eating stuffed rice balls, carb on carb but the one I tried in Rome made me change my mind.  It was just at a small open-air restaurant at a block near where we stayed at.

Our Rome Home in 2011.  Ate arancini and pasta on my first night. and 2nd night.

The golden domes encrusting the rice were nicely fried without being too greasy. Inside was soft with a bite rice cooked like risotto, embraced in sweet tangy cloying tomato and gooey stringy mozzarella. It sold at 1.5 euro each but I would’ve paid double. It was so good.

Detalle’s version of arancini had a similar texture and taste. It is one of the better arancinis in the metro and I wouldn’t mind ordering it again.

Detalle’s Basque Fried Chicken is chicken meat similar to chicken tenders with crispy skin bits giving hither and thither crunches. A spicy tomato-pepper profile glides on your palate pointing out a lovely mellowed spicy paprika.

This was one of my favorites on the table. The mint yogurt dressing on top sedates the dish with its cool creaminess.

Gobbets of meat threaded on a skewer and roasted in open fire. The marinade on the meat is evident of Mediterranean spices with strapping hints of garlic, curry and cumin. I barely touched the pita and focused instead on the beef.  But the pita was nicely toasted and very thin.

Ya Kun Kaya –Ortigas

We’ve visited Ya Kun Kaya twice in two weeks.  This post is from the Ortigas visit.  But we also visited the other branch for the first time just recently.  While waiting for our flight to Cebu last Saturday morning, we also had quick breakfast bite at the Ya Kun Kaya at the domestic airport.  Something’s different, ambience for one.  I wasn’t able to take photos.

Between the French cheesy toast and the grilled version, I like the latter better.  I prefer my toast with a good crunch. I love the soft-boiled eggs on top of my grilled toast –the eggs made me want to stretch out and say, “Good morning sunshine!”

Taverna Verde

If I were to choose a spot in Ortigas I’d love to hang out with friends for a few drinks, Taverna will be the place I will keep returning to.  It’s so accessible to me after office hours and ambience is terrific.  Good chill ambience to unwind and spend more time catching up.  Prices of the drinks aren’t bad at all.

We had two orders of nachos and I think I finished 80% of the 2 plates.  Without a doubt, I declare Taverna’s nachos as one of the best in the North!

Last night, our group of 10 filled a table at Taverna, one of my favorite drinking spots in the Metro, particularly in Ortigas.  It’s been a while since I was last here but it’s good to unwind after such a long day.

 

Bubba and I were the last ones to arrive around 930pm.  Madz and Francis are usually on time.  And I’m almost ALWAYS on time.  So you know which direction to look at when I’m late.

 

 

I was feeling really tired and it was a slow start for me trying to catch the groove.  Madz was at the helm of the table conversation and it was great seeing her in such an uber-bouncy and cheery mood excited about having everyone there and sharing the photography session ideas both Pearl and her are planning.  How can you not get infected with such enthusiasm?  That’s why I really adore her.

 

 

The get-together was a pre-send-off (yes, there’s another despedida at Madz’ place on Sunday) for Bridgette, Madz’ visiting cousin from Australia, who also visited last year during Typhoon Ondoy.  Odette (Madz’ sister), Pearl (Madz’ studio business partner), Bogs (one of Madz’ dozens of cousin), Issang and Bobby, and Mr. Milo Kid (Francis… he hates that moniker) were there.

 

 

The Mojito relaxed me a bit and definitely, Taverna’s yummy nachos revived my energy!!!  I didn’t realize Taverna has such awesome bar chows since we always only order drinks and the Spinach dip appetizer.  Bubba was on an eating rage last night and ordered 2 nachos, 1 chicken and pepper melt tortilla, chorizo and cheese croquettes.  He wants to go back today for the chorizo and cheese croquettes.  Bridge loved the melt tortilla and claims that it agreed with her Australian taste buds.

 

 

We just kept laughing the night away.  I think we were the loudest bunch there and I didn’t even contribute to the noise that much (awfully exhausted and hungry) but I thoroughly enjoyed the evening with the whole group.  Issang left earlier because she was joining a Travel Factor trip that night (woo-hoo!), a first for her.

 

 

Despite some crazy moods of Bridge, Madz will surely miss her presence at home (even the bullying haha).  It’ll be sad to see her ride the plane back to Brisbane on Tuesday but I’m sure she’d be back in Manila for another vacation sooner than Madz can say, “Patience is a virtue.” 😉

 

 

 

Friday Night at Taverna Verde and Kenny F.

 

 

To many, Kenny Flake is the name.  To me, Kennykins or Kinster.  Kinster gave me a call 2 weeks ago wanting to meet up.  It’s about time since we haven’t seen each other in months!

 

 

Kennykins and I met up Friday night and off we went chilling at Taverna.  The fashionable Kinster was fabulous as ever, wearing a gray vest adorned by a striking black flower over a crisp white tee. 

 

We both reminisced our frequent RCBC lunches some years ago.  He pointed out that we’ve been friends for more than 5 years.  I didn’t realize that it’s already been that long.  How time flies.

 

Kenny’s making me promise to go to CREAM.  I’m trying to get out of it.

Conditions: only if I can get in for free again and if I lose 10 lbs before Oct. 30.

First one is doable.  Second one, questionable.

Besides, I am so “unlike” Kinster who can whip up gaudy, intriguing and glitzy costumes for a Halloween ball. 

 

Taverna was literally packed to the roof that Friday night.  Guess I’m not the only one who loves the ambience.

 

 

My tummy was acting so weird that after some quality time bonding over our Mojitos, we called it a night.

 

 

Just before leaving, sweet Kenny bestowed me the eye-catching black flower pin I kept ogling at that evening.

My First Christmas Ghost

 

 

Wednesday last week saw me, Chai, Paolo and Patrick having dinner at Behrouz.  It was the first time this group hung out.  The connection?  Me.

 

Chai was supposed to accompany a friend who just came back from Indonesia to dinner at Aysees.  I’ve been meaning to try that famous sisig place in Pasig but I never got around to.  But that dinner was canceled so we ended up eating at Behrouz in Metrowalk.

After dinner, Pao suggested to get drinks at Taverna, a newly opened chill-out place in Ortigas.  This little quaint place at the corner of Julia Vargas and Meralco Avenue was pretty cozy, plus food and booze are low-priced.

 

On the table: Apple Martini, Mojito, local beers and Taverna’s Spinach dip. 

 

 

Suddenly, Ortigas went black.  Power outage.

 

 

Pao and Chai suddenly started talking about Aztec calendar and winter solstice.

After an hour or so, we transferred to the 2nd floor, which was open air.  Soaking in the cool breeze of the night…

 

Sometime past midnight, we decided to call it a night.

 

Pat brought me home.  He didn’t let me off the hook that easy and tried to tap into the inner Jane –the one he knew in college.  He badgered me for being stressed out with so many things and not being “happy,” when I can let myself be happy -only if I let go of the excess baggage in my life.  Let go of the non-necessities.  He tells me he’s content with his relationship with Edah and his life has taken this direction with her.  For once, the tables turned and I’m listening to HIM.  Felt different.  But it felt good.

 

10 years and this is actually the first time Pat’s argument stunned me to silence.

 

And in that silence, I got a whiff of the old Jane back.
