Sumo Sam’s Bacon Wrapped Kani

Last month’s visit to Sumo Sam had us ordering our usual favorites and one that is new.

Bacon Wrapped Kani PHP

It was our first time to order the bacon wrapped Kani.  It’s a good size Kani or artificial shrimp wrapped with a generous strip of bacon and drizzled with teriyaki sauce

California Maki 189

What I love about Sumo Sam’s California Maki is the substantial amount of kani strips placed on top of the sushi and the ample amount of fish roe.

I think Bubba ordered Katsudon or some kind of mushroom chicken rice topping dish.  I now forget what it was.

I liked the bacon wrapped kani but I consider Sumo Sam’s beef enoki a better order.

Beef Enoki PHP 208

Generous amount of enoki mushrooms wrapped in thinly sliced beef with a touch of brown semi-sweet soy sauce.  Enoki are golden needle mushrooms with silky texture and mild almost fruity flavor.

Now, that’s a wrap! 🙂

Sumo Yum at Sumo Sam

I’m in the mood for Japanese a lot lately and since we were at Shangri-la Plaza Mall, there’s not many other choice so we decided on Sumo Sam –much to Bubba’s delight.  I’m not a big fan coming from a few not-so-happy dining experiences here in 2008 –slow service, fingers almost touching the food, etc.  But I thought of giving it another try before our movie night that evening.

Setting is basically still the same –full-length mirrors, wooden tables with matching chairs in a modern Japanese motif.  The wait staff is still cloaked in black ensemble.

On the Table

Gindara PHP 329

Local gindara or black cod marinated in sweet sake ginger sauce.  I love gindara and it’s one of my gauge of a good Japanese restaurant.  With its clean delectable fish meat, Sumo Sam’s gindara did not disappoint and I almost finished it all by myself.  I love the light sauce and the crispy lightly salted skin.

California Maki PHP 189

It’s quite interesting how Sumo Sam makes their California maki.  There’s mango and lettuce inside the seaweed rolled rice square, but instead of placing kani inside as well, they place it on top with a lot of fish roe.  I love fish roe.

Beef Enoki PHP 208

Generous amount of enoki mushrooms wrapped in thinly sliced beef with a touch of brown semi-sweet soy sauce.  Enoki are golden needle mushrooms with silky texture and mild almost fruity flavor.

Katsudon PHP 188

A bowl of rice topped with deep fried breaded pork cutlet with egg and condiments.  Of course, Bubba’s perpetual Katsudon that I really don’t get.  Every time we eat at a Japanese restaurant, this is all he orders.  I don’t get it.  And he always orders Tonkatsu sauce on the side.  Lovable.

Service was much better this time around.  It was a good selection of dishes that night (except for the Katsudon har-har) that definitely satisfied my Japanese craving.  Got quite a yum at Sumo Sam! 🙂

A Sum of Ho-hum @ Sumo Sam

Full-length mirrors are on the khaki wall.  Wooden tables matched with black leather low chairs traditional Japanese with modernity.  The wait staff are all dressed in black ensemble.  The house music makes the vibe young and hip.  Red spotlights outside frames the total look of the restaurant.

It took a while for our orders to arrive and when it did, I almost did not eat it.  The server had his fingers on the plate (like almost touching the food or sauce!) every time (note every) they served the food –so gross.  A sushi roll even fell from the plate that the waiter was about to serve another table.

On the Table:

Freebie:  Hot Raspberry Tea

Bubba liked the service tea that expels an aroma of raspberries.

Pepper Crusted Chicken with Garlic Linguini PHP240

It wasn’t pepper crusted, more like garnished with pepper.  I liked this dish because the chicken compliments the garlic pasta.

Ebi Tempura PHP330

Too pricey for its taste and size

Japanese Rice PHP60

Ho-hum.

Katsudon PHP180

This is Bubba’s staple order every time the cuisine is Japanese.  He said it was salty and surprisingly didn’t finish his food.  I would normally finish it since I don’t want to waste food but I wasn’t in my eating rampage mood this week.

Dynamite Roll PHP195

This has got to be the highlight of the whole average dinner.  It had generous serving of salmon on top of the sushi rolls.  It came with a sweet brown sauce, not your usual soy and wasabi dip.  It was named dynamite because it was supposed to be spicy.  A vision of Elmer Fudd red faced and smoke coming out of his ears entered my mind.  Sadly, it didn’t serve its name well.  I didn’t find it spicy at all.

Celebrity spotting:

Toni Gonzaga and Direk Paul at Cravings

Ariel of Ariel and Maverick Duo at Sumo Sam

Preggers Ina Raymundo with family passing by

The food was overly priced, as it is only artistically ordinary.  Some dishes are interestingly different.  I am not excited to have a second visit to Sumo Sam but we’ll see.  Bubba gave a passing grade.
