Tis the Season to be at Hotel Jen Manila

People often ask, “Can you recommend a good hotel?”  My go to answer will always be any of the Shangri-La group of hotels.  Hong Kong-based Shangri-La International Hotel Management Ltd. manages a new genre of hotels called Hotel Jen.

A friend of mine was in Singapore a couple of weeks ago to watch the Taylor Swift concert there with her daughter.  They stayed at Hotel Jen in Singapore and we exchanged notes as I shared with her that I spent last weekend at Hotel Jen in Manila.

Hotel Jen is a diverse collection of hotels in the best locations across Asia Pacific, with a unique brand of style and service delivery designed to appeal to a new “Jen-eration” of travelers.  Hotel Jen is the transformation of Shangri-La’s Traders Hotels.  Since these hotels have opened, it’s been offering fresh, friendly and fuss-free intuitive service to independently minded business and leisure travelers.

Blanca de China Lifestyle Spa

My schedule has been running a little wild and amok lately but I’ve been praying to God to slow things down a bit.  In fact, last night He made it happen.  I suddenly found myself at home grilling burgers for myself and enjoying a good quiet time with Him after dinner.  I planned to read just 4 chapters of the Bible – a practice a friend taught me to train myself to read The Word on a regular basis.  Before I knew it, I read more than 4 chapters and was immersed in His words, filled with encouragement and a beautiful stillness.

Lifestyle Spa, spa, beauty and wellness, beauty center, salon, San Juan, best, betweenbites, blogger, beauty blog, lifestyle blogger, lifestyle blog, Metro Manila, Pinoy, Philippines, Filipino, guide, services, price, how much, Blanca de China lifestyle spa, Blanca de China new, Blanca, Bianca, threading, galvanic treatment, Manila, San Juan, Quezon City, offer, services prices, address, location, spa party, best spa party, girlfriends, rates, foot scrub, pedicure

The thought of a grilled cheese sandwich with Asiago, Parmesan, Mozzarella and Cheddar still snuck in sometimes, okay? 🙂  I’m only human.  Human frailty is still present but yea I shoved those picturesque desires for crunchy gooey munchies and focused on my real Bread of Life.

Ramada Manila Central Hotel, Binondo

I have fond memories of Binondo as a child or teenager walking with her dad along the busy people-filled streets of Philippines’ China Town.  I also frequented the area when I took up advance summer classes of Trigonometry and Geometry, Typing and Chinese classes at YMCA.

Ivan Man Dy’s Binondo Food Wok

I also had fun doing a food walk tour with Ivan Man Dy at the helm guiding us while we snaked in between streets and corners to find the best spots for Chinese specialty food.  I was back at the area again sometime July when The Food Club spent the weekend over at a newly built hotel in Manila.

Ramada Manila Central stands tall at the heart of Binonda, Manila, Philippines amidst neighboring historical sites like the Minor Basilica of San Lorenzo Ruiz, who happens to be the first Filipino saint.  Launched this year, it is a comfortable respite at the center of one of the most historic sites in the country and the oldest Chinatown in the world, where cultures of Filipino and Chinese meet.

The hotel is quite accessible being situated in one of Manila’s central business, cultural and commercial districts.  It’s also a few minutes away from big shopping complexes like Divisoria, 168, and 999 Malls.  Bubba and I were first to arrive at the venue and initially parked at the basement but since there was a bit of construction ongoing in their basement parking, we opted to park outside beside the historic Binondo Church.  We learned from the front desk that they actually have parking slots reserved there for their clients and they assured us that the car is secured with round the clock security.

Initially we thought of checking in at the ground floor but since we will be occupying the rooms at the Executive Floor, there was an express check-in waiting for us on that floor, 5th.  We were assisted with our overnight baggage and showed us into our room.

Cochinillo Asado, A New Discovery at 22 Prime, Discovery Suites

22 PRIME always had a soft spot in my heart.  Bubba and I find random refuge at the restaurant located at Discovery Suites’ 22nd floor after a long day at work.  Having occupied the Number 1 post on my Between Bites’ Best Date Places in 2010, it’s no secret that I like going here for dinners and even cocktails at Serendipity Lounge.  Listed among the top five Philippine restaurants by the international Miele Guide on its 2011-2012 Edition, it confirms that my taste is not far from theirs.

During Spot.Ph’s Goldspot Awards, 22 Prime was also awarded as the city’s best steak specialty restaurant.

Flapjacks Returning Favorites

When we think of Flapjacks, one picture comes to mind –stacks of golden yellow light and fluffy pancakes all ready to be smeared with butter, whipped cream and bathed in glistening maple syrup.  We imagine hunky uniformed and expert “Flapjacks” men who flip and flap the pancakes into perfection.  But there is more to Flapjacks that just deliciously stacked signature pancakes and breakfast combos.

Their breakfast meals and items are available at any time of the day –whether at the crack of first sunlight, or when the sun is at its highest peak or when it’s about to kiss earth goodnight.  If you are craving for other fares, Flapjacks seasonally changes their menu to introduce new dishes that can stop a strike on your bored palates.

In 2008, I thought they still had a limiting menu but Flapjacks has long improved on the items they can offer.  And while they keep patrons’ palates refreshed every now and then, some look for Flapjacks dishes that have become their favorite.

On the Table

Mango Exotica PHP 325 (Regular)

The colors of the salad ingredients are vibrant and inviting from mango wedges to dried cranberries and raisins, almond chips, refreshing greens and the white-brown balance of croutons and chicken.  The crunch of the fresh vegetables and spikes of mellow sweetness from the berries and nutty taste spell SPRING on a plate.

The mango vinaigrette was light and had the right sweetness and acidity.

Parmesan Chicken Wings PHP 255

My friends, particularly Richard and Irene of www.talesfromthetummy.com, tease me that it is my “chicken wings” season again (having eaten the mango habanero chicken wings of B&T Mexican Kitchen and finishing almost the whole basket, despite being “FULL” and on a “diet.”  GOSH, now I’m craving for those wings.  You should try it).

I love all things chicken wings and Flapjacks Parmesan wings are one of the best Parmesan versions I have tasted so far.  I’d probably rate it Top 2 with the top spot going to Wingman’s lemon parmesan wings followed by Flapjacks closely behind.  The success of the wings rely heavily both on the crispiness of the skin and the actual glaze of the sharp Parmesan cheese which Flapjacks nailed on the spot.  It has that buttery taste but nothing overpowering.  Their Parmesan chicken wings are nowhere oily or dripping butter. Aubergine Again and Again

Aubergine, pronounced somewhat nasal by some people, is the French word for “eggplant.”  I remember my mom always tells me that eggplants have barely any nutritional value –yet it’s frequently on our dinner table because it’s one of her favorite vegetables –or fruit for that matter.  I take after her because after a certain point, I finally grew appreciation for them.  Eggplants can absorb flavors tremendously and I love that its texture can be squashy because it’s always thirsty for liquid or oil.  It’s prone to sucking up flavor and moisture from how it is cooked.

In Spain, it was highly cherished for its supposed aphrodisiac qualities.  Who would have thought right?  In 16th century England and Italy, eggplant was apparently shunned and suspected of causing madness.  I don’t know about eggplants but I know one Aubergine can cause some happy madness in me.

Some eggplants have won best in gardening and biggest or best-shaped trophies but this particular Aubergine has been awarded the Nescafe Gold Spot 2009, The Miele Guide’s One of Asia’s TOP 20 (Restaurants 2009/10) and Philippine Tatler Best Restaurants 2008. [Read more…]

A Weekend Getaway at Summit Ridge, Tagaytay

Bubba and I drove to Tagaytay last Saturday and checked in at Summit Ridge Hotel around 3pm.  Right before we reached Summit Ridge, we noticed the low lying clouds from the other side of the hills and the road started to be really foggy.  Not long before I got worried about road visibility, Summit Ridge was within sight.

 (from Summit Ridge website)

Robinsons Land Corporation opened the doors of Summit Ridge Hotel in June 2009 and guests who visit Tagaytay for its picturesque view of Taal Volcano and its refreshing surroundings and want the modern convenience of a hotel have been welcomed since.  It perfectly sits atop Tagaytay Ridge that’s actually 2,000 feet above sea level –the very incentive to take a short drive to Tagaytay, cool climate.

Right beside the hotel is the Summit Ridge Promenade, which is a commercial complex that has quite a number of interesting restaurants that include both the new and the familiar.  The roster of dining venues includes Classic Cuisine (C2), Giligan’s restaurant, The Sizzling Pepper Steak, Ted’s Oldtimer La Paz Batchoy (perfect for cold weather) and The Coffee Beanery.  I was wondering where Sanctuario restaurant was since it wasn’t in its location near the Rotonda.  I’m glad to see that it has moved to a better location at the Summit Ridge Promenade.

They also have a few stores for shopping and Fun Time amusement center for the kids or kids at heart.  What’s wonderful about this hotel and promenade being owned and managed by the Robinsons group is the fact that they also built a Robinsons Supermarket right next to it, which makes it so convenient to buy necessities that you may need while traveling.

Hotel staff welcomes you by the drop-off point at the car lobby.  Step into the sprawling hotel lobby of Summit Ridge that swiftly spells hotel elegance.  If only the personnel by the reception is as welcoming and friendly as the ones that greet you by the door, EVEN with a warm smile from ME and a quick pip about the weather outside, I would have definitely felt right at ease.  But no.  I’ve had friendlier and more accommodating reception from two different lodging places in Tagaytay.  I’m happy to note though that that was the only hiccup from our wonderful and relaxed stay at Summit Ridge last weekend.

Our room reservation for that day was for a Twin Classic but since that room specifically offers two single beds, we asked to be upgraded to King Classic that has one King size bed –which is more ideal for vacationing couples.

The difference in the rates between a Twin Classic and the King is only PHP 600.  You can also get 64sqm suites at PHP 12,000 – PHP 14,000 a night with two balconies, kitchen implements, dinnerware set-up, microwave oven for your leftover food and reheating needs and a built-in kitchen hub –a complete set-up for those who travel and want to play cook or house whichever is the case.

Room Rates:

Twin Classic – P6, 550

King Classic – P7, 150

Twin/ King De Luxe Room – P7, 550

Two-Bedroom Suite – P12,000

Summit Suite – P14,000

The 32sqm King Classic room looked bigger than its actual size.  The room is suitably equipped with 32-inch LCD TV with cable including a channel guide, in-room coffee and tea facilities, a safety box, a spacious shower, telephone, personal fridge, and split-type AC!  Best of all, which is really a come-on for folks like me who want to be connected online or do some work on the side, Summit Ridge hotel has in-room Wi-Fi Internet access!  And connection is gooooood.  *nods*

Bubba enjoying the Wi Fi and plurking

Squeaky clean bathroom with no moldy smells! 😀

I like that they provisioned for a bag rack

As mentioned, every room has a balcony overlooking the beautiful and scenic Taal Lake, which is especially lovely in the morning.  Bubba spent a good time by the balcony Saturday afternoon as well as Sunday morning.

Another thing that rocks about Summit Ridge is the 24-hour gym!!!  I actually brought gym clothes including my iPod and work-out gloves but incidentally, I left my new running shoes!  Bubba brought everything from head to toe for workout but guess what, the bed was too cozy that he slept in and ignored his alarm the following morning.  Folks who are gym buffs or those who have incorporated working out in their everyday lifestyle need not worry even if they stay out too late exploring Tagaytay –the gym is open anytime if you want to break out a sweat.

View of the pool deck from our floor

During that weekend, I think there was a wedding ceremony in Tagaytay (probably Chapel on the Hill) and they decided to do the wedding reception at Summit Ridge.  Bubba and I saw the wedding car at the parking lot and guests that were dressed in the nines.  Summit Ridge also offers ballrooms for your birthday, wedding and other celebrations, as well as training and functions rooms for business seminars, conferences and team building sessions.  What better way to throw a party or an event than in the cool and breezy Tagaytay City, a natural escape from the city.

(from Summit Ridge website)

That evening, we were tempted to go to Antonio’s like last time but we decided to try something new.  Bubba and I headed out to dine at Taj of Tagaytay (more on this on a separate post) and had a wonderful dinner of Mutton Biryani Rice and Chicken Vindaloo.  After stuffing ourselves silly, the comfort of our room was suddenly heavily missed that we decided to head back right after dinner.

Summit Ridge Promenade offers live acoustic nights every Saturdays in its open-air lifestyle center from 7pm to 12mn.  We caught a bit of the music on our way back to the hotel.  The Sky Lounge on the roof deck is also worth a look.

Wine and Coco Bella Chocolates 🙂

That evening, Bubba and I mused whether to read our own books while drinking wine or watch a movie on his laptop.  As usual, the latter won and we were immersed with the movie, Uncertainty, starring Joseph Gordon Levitt (who I think is as deep of an actor as Heath Ledger, with deep penetrating eyes and facial expression) until midnight.  Movie somehow reminded me of Gwyneth Paltrow’s Sliding Doors.

After a long prayer for both our families, sleep beckoned us and we were off to dreamland.  A long satisfying, uninterrupted and restful sleep followed and we stretched out our arms to a beautiful sunny morning around 9am.

Breakfast that gorgeous Sunday was spent at Annie’s/C2 at the ground floor of Summit Ridge Hotel.  There was a lean breakfast buffet set-up awaiting the morning people such as us.

Bubba had a plateful helping of longganisa (local pork sausage), garlic rice, 2 sunny side-up eggs, ham, danggit/tuyo (dried fish) and a bowl of milk and cereals.  I wasn’t in a big mood to eat so I had something light –omelet and 1 slice of wheat bread.  Bubba had mango juice and hot chocolate while I had pineapple juice.

After breakfast, we went to check out the pool area and still spent some quality time lounging in our room before heading out for lunch.  Lunch was spent at the enchantingly charming Marcia Adam’s Tuscany (more on this on a separate entry).

Having been to Tagaytay countless of times, I thought that I’ve already combed Tagaytay to the grits but there is still so much to discover in the city on the hills –even lofty accommodations in a hotel category such as Summit Ridge Hotel as well as fantastic restaurants around the bend.  Tagaytay still never fails to exude that harmony of natural beauty with a bit of urban style.  The Summit Ridge Hotel and Promenade is one of the best Tagaytay bets for any weekend warrior.  Room accommodation is quite sufficient.

Australian Tomahawk Chop of 22 Prime: A Definite Prime Mover

Thursday, I made my way to Discovery Suites to partake in a hearty lunch made even more wonderful with the company at the table.  Stepping into the elevator, I pressed the button with the number 22.  As mentioned in my previous post, the 22nd floor has a comfortable lounge setting as well as a relaxed dining area amidst the lavish surroundings of Discovery Suites shared by Serendipity Lounge and 22 Prime.

The last time Bubba and I were here, we had a lot to order –bisque, their bone marrow dish (served on the bone!), cheese bread and steak.  It’s not surprising to order practically everything on the menu (almost all are favorably satisfying) since 22 Prime is one of our favorite restaurants in the Metro while Chef Rick’s cheese bread tops our list of comfort favorites.  It is a gastronomic oasis found at the heart of Ortigas business district.

Interestingly, having a number of dinners here, I have never visited during broad daylight.  Thursday was a good opportunity to view during daytime the familiar place accustomed to me in low lights.  It has a warm and inviting atmosphere even with the sun’s brightness coming through their beautiful massive floor-length windows.

There’s always a sense of satisfaction whenever we dine here –from knowledgeable, adequate and genuinely friendly service to being served great tasting gourmet food.

22 Prime has always been known for its mouth-watering premium steak selections.  A gargantuan guest will change the “food” landscape by introducing the largest prime steak that will definitely appeal to you and your meat-ravenous comrades.  On June 1, 2010, Discovery Suites’ 22 Prime unveils the Australian Tomahawk Chop and “Verse 1” Specialty Menu.

Two of Australia’s best produce, beef and wine, take center stage at 22 Prime from June 1-15, 2010 for lunch and dinner.  Gourmands with a taste for fine meats can now indulge in a large serving of Tomahawk Rib-Eye Chop, approximately weighing 1 kilogram, grilled to a gourmet’s delight and accompanied with a casserole of perfectly seasoned baby vegetables, a bowl of Caesar salad, and a bottle of Verse 1 Cabernet Sauvignon.

June is definitely a month where there’s more to discover at Discovery Suites as 22 Prime acquaints you with the Tomahawk Chop.

A Tomahawk Chop can be an intimidating piece of meat.  When we came face to face with its raw greatness, the group collectively gasped, obviously wowed by the huge bone-in Australian beef.

Chef David Pardo de Ayala, Corporate Chef of the Discovery group of hotels, explained that such a distinguished piece of meat deserves a flawless preparation from readying the meat in room temperature to the actual grilling of the meat and to its “resting” stage which is absolutely crucial.  The whole ceremony done attentively ensures an evenly juicy, tender, succulent steak at the table.

For those who are less inclined, Chef David Pardo de Ayala was born in Bogota, Colombia and was the youngest winner of Colombia’s the Nestle “Toca de Oro” representing Colombia at gastronomic competitions of continental level.  He traveled to New York to further expand his professional scope and attended the prestigious Culinary Institute of America.  After a number of years as Executive Chef in several five star hotels in Colombia and restaurants in New York, he settled in the Philippines in 2007 and opened the prominent Soleil Restaurant in Makati.

Currently, Chef David functions as Corporate Chef for the Discovery hotel group where he sets the food and beverage directions of Discovery Suites in Pasig City (which houses Restaurant 5, 22 Prime and Serendipity Lounge), Discovery Country Suites in Tagaytay City (home of Café Verbena) and Discovery Shores Boracay (Indigo, Platitos and Sands).  Anything that comes out of Chef David’s high-powered kitchen proves to be cooked with the freshest ingredients, care and creativity.

On the Table

Bread Sticks/Bread and Three Spreads

The perky staff brings to the long table several “tin baskets” of bread and breadsticks escorted with three different dips that are positively addicting.

1st Dip: Skordalia

Potato puree, silky and smooth spread with a hint of lemon

2nd Dip: Sofrito

Tomato with olive oil

3rd Dip: Chicken Liver Pate

Very creamy with a hint of mushroom

Australian Tomahawk Chop and Verse 1 Specialty Menu PHP 4,800

Grilled Tomahawk Chop 1 kilogram, 6-Star Tenderplus Australian Beef Rib Eye Steak

Served to share with a Casserole of Baby Vegetables and a Bowl of Caesar Salad “22 Prime”

1 Bottle of Verse 1 Cabernet Sauvignon

*Allow 25 minutes cooking time

The Tomahawk Chop is one of the largest rib eye steaks in Australia and culled from Tenderplus 6-star grass fed beef.  It takes its name from the 30-centimeter of rib bone that is left attached to the meat, which in turn increase the meat’s flavor and tucks in the moistness when grilled.

My Portion of the Tomahawk Chop

Quick-fire thoughts:

I love the ample size of fat that adds a buttery texture

and heightens flavor of the meat

Peppercorn sauce bursts a bouncy flavor that goes perfectly with the chop

The salad is a good pause in between bites of meat as a cleanser to the palate

Side of baby vegetables had the right crisp and seasoning

–the lone brussel sprout was my favorite!  Quite tasty!!! 🙂

The Tomahawk Chop is a perfect order when dining with friends.  Cast off inhibitions as you all dig in with immense hunger for the tender and flavorful Australian beef.  There is an option to have it sliced proportionately in the kitchen.  Share with a group the unadulterated pleasure of high-end beef and clink your glasses “cheers” to a vibrant wine served on your table.  This is the moment that is best shared with good friends.

Accompanying this gastronomic indulgence is a bottle of Verse 1 Cabernet Sauvignon from Brookland Valley –cited Winery of the Year by the James Halliday 2009 Australia Wine Companion.  Verse 1 wine has rich, vibrant garnet in color while it displays full blackcurrant aromas with hints of leafiness balanced out by fine French oak.  The palate is fruit driven with a soft texture and oak flavors.  Elegant richness balances well with the meat’s intensity.

Chef David, with years of experience cooking in Colombia, Manhattan and Long Island, prepares wonderful dishes both menu staples that have become favorites and upscale monthly specials that you’d certainly want to catch.  22 Prime becomes a more familiar place to you and friends for great food and conversation –a prime spot to share an enjoyable meal that first awes your dining group visually with its massive size, and once cooked, follows through with winsome taste.

Marking Punta de Uian with Kinster

I’ve penciled in Punta de Uian on my calendar for May 22, 2010.  Punta de Uian is a resort in Zambales.  It’s been a while since I was last in Zambales.  It’s such a beautiful province and really underrated.  There are so many pretty little islands in Zambales like Anawangin, Capones, Camara, etc.  A lot and the towns there are really nice too.

It’s worth to try their bagnet too.  That reminds me, I haven’t written about Conquer Zambales adventure race.  I wonder if I still remember all the details… that was in August or October 2008 –see I don’t even remember the month anymore.

What got me excited about Zambales is not only the destination, but also the company.  This is after all Kennykins’ idea.  He SMS-ed me that he scored 2 rooms at Punta de Uian for free and booked us for May 22.  “You were the first in mind when I got the accommodation.”  Ain’t that sweet? 😉

Quickly put together this simple montage with Kennykins my Kinster:

A Potter’s Paradise at Ugu Bigyan

Our recent Bali trip introduced us to an area there called Ubud, an artist village that is a foodie haven as well.  This Holy Week, I didn’t have to travel that far to get both hunger for artistry and gastronomic finds filled.  At the heart of Tiaong, Quezon, Ugu Bigyan sends me to another memorable journey.

It’s Maundy Thursday.  We set out for San Pablo, Laguna at 8AM.  It’s been a while since we traveled South on a holiday.  I’m not really big on traveling southbound since they started that road construction that’s been ongoing for years.  It’s good to know that all lanes are now passable in SLEX.  Nevertheless, we didn’t escape the heavy holiday traffic.

I was quite excited to finally visit Ugu Bigyan.  I remember in 2007, I called and inquired about getting a reservation for four because I was planning a weekend trip with Chai and her Mr. Big then.  That didn’t push through but never did Ugu Bigyan leave my mind as one of the places I want to go to.  I read somewhere about their delicious Filipino dishes –like Kulawo, Lato Salad, Sinigang na Baboy, Adobong Chicken and Pork, Grilled Tilapia and mussels with vegetables.  I’d imagine that Sinagang na Baboy to be really sour, a bit creamy/milky (from the gabi or taro) and oily from the pork fats –just how I would make it if I knew how to cook it myself.

It took us 4 hours and 30 minutes to get to Tiaong, Quezon.  The plan was to drop by Tahanan ni Aling Meding first and check in, but decided to go straight to Ugu Bigyan.  It is 12:30pm after all, time for lunch.  That long drive is not the best way to start anybody’s morning.  It made us feel so tired and prickly.

The car entered the red clay house one won’t fail to spot on the left side of the street.  As soon as the car got parked, limbs stretched out to the open sky.  Walking inside, our fatigue seems to have abandoned us and stayed with the car.

Augusto “Ugo” Bigyan, is a celebrated pottery artist who opens the door of his house-cum-workshop to the rest of us looking for a relaxed getaway with a bit of ceramic artistry.

My Photo with Ugu

Stepping into the world of Ugu is like stepping into an old world.  Earthy.  Unpretentious.  Al-fresco.  Makes you feel that Metro Manila is hundred hours away… and your mind also leaves behind whatever occupies it in bustling Manila.

We meet Ugu’s sister(?), Haidee and her son Kim at Ugu’s clay-crafts gallery.  There was another group ahead of us, scouring the area where Ugu’s hands have shaped some fine pottery arts and crafts.  The shop displays his original dinnerware sets, furniture and house décor.

We look around and bathe ourselves in fresh air.  The unpolluted air revives our tired spirits making us feel like we only woke up a few minutes ago, ready for the rest of the day.

Ugu’s pottery garden composes of different dining areas, each bedecked with its own artistic slash native charm.

While waiting for the food to be served, Bubba and I relaxed on our seats.  We see more people coming in.  A familiar face entered my view and I waved hello.  It was Anton of Our Awesome Planet and he shared some of his discoveries in Quezon, particularly Cagbalete Island (which I’ve been meaning to visit as well after reading it on Jen’s site).  Anton has a big project coming up (amidst a lot of his other ongoing projects) but this is a first of OAP and it’s pretty exciting! 😉  You gotta watch out for that!

I also saw Liza, formerly from the Star group with some of her friends.  They are staying at Casa San Pablo, Bubba’s first picked when he planned this trip but I suggested trying a new place so we opted to go for Tahanan ni Aling Meding near Sampaloc Lake.

The wait staff, all in white shirt and board shorts (very summery), arrived and placed the starters on the table.  One apologized that the dishes will come in one at a time because it’s being cooked personally by Ugu fresh in the kitchen.  We didn’t mind at all since time seems to be irrelevant when you are in an exceptionally comfortable and relaxed setting.

On the Table

Halaan Soup

The warm broth with big clams (Pacific clams?) was very soothing, and ideal calmer for my sore throat.

Ensaladang Pako (Fern Salad)

The fern salad tasted fresh with a faint hint of citrus –the bits of green apple slices add a natural and easy sweetness to the dish.

Both starters were good openers.  Quite simple in taste, cleansing the palate for a story of flavors to come.

Tortang Tahong

“Torta” is the Philippine version of omelette.  This particular torta was made with mussels and onions.  It’s not an immediate leap from the taste of the earlier starters but a first for me to try.

Kulawo (Puso ng Saging or Banana Palm Heart)

One taste of Kulawo and Bubba and I were both impressed.  The smoky flavor emerges on top of the flaky dish.  The grilled (tad bit tangy) taste is very delish and we couldn’t quite get enough of it.

Calamares

Big squid rings very lightly battered with sweet and sour sauce on the side

Sauteed Shrimps

Lapu Lapu with Mango Relish

Clean and light fish meat accompanied by sweet and slightly tangy mango relish

Barbecued Spareribs

Interestingly, each dish builds a different layer of flavor and ultimately, the smoky barbecue ribs reconnect the taste of the Kulawo, linking the overall taste.  There’s a thick sheet of fat accompanying the chunk of meat and it melts in the mouth almost surreptitiously.  The barbecue sauce coating is lip smacking that you’d want to scrape off the charred BBQ sauce and nick the bones with your teeth.  Or maybe that’s just me *shrugs*

Cold Coconut Juice

Refreshing with shards of coconut meat

Ginumis

With a smorgasbord of food in front of us, Bubba asked me what my favorite was.

Bubba was surprised that I rated the ribs my #1 because he would suppose that Naughty Nuri’s has raised the bar high in terms of ribs experience.  It’s hard not to really like Ugu’s version of smoked spareribs, with its rich, barbecue flavor… and the sinful fat!

I told him, “You already know by now, me and fat… are this close (crossing my index and middle finger).”

Bubba’s favorite was surprisingly the sautéed garlic shrimp, which he would not normally touch in an ordinary day.

We both agree on our second favorite –the smoky and quite tasty banana palm heart.

Service was great –efficient and very affable.  Ugu is a multi-faceted artist that can whip up the most delicate pottery inside his workshop and the most delectable dishes from his kitchen.

There’s so much to remember on this wonderful lunch at Ugu’s 🙂

Escape into this beautiful countryside home that showcases pottery artwork and clayware that contains scrumptious food… Leave with a satisfied tummy and relaxed mind.  It reminded me of Bali, but it is definitely a class of its own.

How to get there:

(Directions from http://www.waypoints.ph/detail_gen.php?wpt=ugu)

To Tiaong Quezon:

From Manila, take the South Luzon Tollway all the way to the south end.  At the end of the tollway, after the toll plaza, take the exit that points to Lucena and simply drive along this national road until you reach the Sto. Tomas junction.  Sto. Tomas has two junctions, and one of which (the second) does not have any road sign when we passed by.  Anyway, on both juctions, take the road to the left (southeastward) toward Lucena.  This will take you through Alaminos then San Pablo Laguna.  At San Pablo junction, just follow the highway, veering to the right and bypassing the city.  Do not enter San Pablo proper.   Next town after San Pablo would be Tiaong.

From Tiaong: From the Tiaong market, continue further southwest along the national road.  After about 240m, the road will turn sharply to the left.  Continue down the road southeast.  About 480m from the turn you will see the Tiaong Municipio on your right.  Continue travelling for another 2.4km from the municipio until you see the Tiaong Rural Bank on the left side.  If you prefer looking at kilometer posts, this rural bank is a few meters after KM98.  Turn left at the small street just before the rural bank.  600m into the street, after crossing a rail road halfway, you will see a sign ‘Alvarez Village’.   Turn left, and barely 90m from the corner, you will see a distinctly different house constructed from bricks on the left side. This is Ugu’s workshop-residence.

Vanilla Suites, Tagaytay

October 24, 2009.  A hidden gem was discovered in Tagaytay.

Most hotels were fully booked that weekend.  There were 2 more rooms available at a certain bed and breakfast hotel, price range PHP 7,000 -8,000, which include all the pampering works.  If the reception weren’t snooty as usual (first visit here was the same), a room would have been booked.  Decided to take a chance elsewhere and while going around, like an answered wish, we chanced upon Vanilla Suites.

All three rooms were quite inviting.  I liked the Garden suite but to spare 1K, opted to get the Classic suite.  It was as cozy and dreamy.  We were served our welcome drinks in the room while we settled in.

I didn’t want to leave the room but we had dinner reservations at Antonio’s.  We were back a little past midnight and the ambience was the perfect setting for a long relaxed sleep.

The next morning, it was good to go out and feel the Tagaytay breeze.  The morning was lovely, the sun giving a tender peck on the skin.  There’s a short patch leading to a swing on the lower area and we decided to take a walk before breakfast.

Breakfast was served by Rosso Café | Ristorante (same management as the one in Manila).  The friendly service was professional, efficient and accommodating.  Vanilla Suites is also accepting wedding reception among other events.  The packages are quite reasonable.  It’s worth a look for those planning to wed soon.

After the breakfast, we rested and scheduled our cold stone facial and massage.

I see batman too.

By 12 noon, we were ready to check out.  With a reluctant goodbye, we thanked the staff and promised a return.

Aubergine

Recently dined at Aubergine for a business dinner with BBC and it was quite appropriate.  Aubergine, French for eggplant, is an illustrious French Continental restaurant affiliated with the International School for Culinary Arts and Hotel Management (ISCAHM).  It is not my first visit at Aubergine but the stellar wine cellar still catches the attention as the showpiece spectacle of the restaurant.

On the Table

French Duck Confit PHP

With creamed Brussels sprouts and parsley marble potatoes

Roasted Wagyu Beef Tri Tip PHP 1,200

With pan-fried duck foie gras, Port wine sauce, glazed vegetable and Pommery mustard mash potato

The entrée plate arrived looking fanciful with the lavish alliance of Wagyu and foie gras at the spotlight, outlined with champagne froth, while shoestring potatoes curled resembling a bush, glossed vegetables and mustard mashed potato at the hem.

Requested for medium and the kitchen got the perfect doneness according to preference.  The Wagyu beef is just divine, a reddish pink center with an outer charred layer perfectly seared, locking the moisture of succulent meat.  The luxurious lean cut of Wagyu didn’t have intense marbling in it as most expect of Wagyu beef.  Tri tip is a comparatively lean cut since it is taken from the bottom sirloin, similar to skirt steak.

Foie gras, the fattened liver of a duck or goose, in this case duck, was indisputably delicious.  It was definitely rich in flavor, surprisingly more generous in size than expected.  Quite delicately rich and creamy, it enhanced the beef flavor of the meat providing an almost melting effect in the mouth.

Aubergine’s Roasted Wagyu Beef Tri Tip is a perfect embrace of everything that is sheer pleasure with beef.

Premium Night at 22 Prime

It was Saturday, the cool and crisp evening air surrounds the city.  The night was begging for a gratifying dinner and off we headed to Discovery Suites.  Café Verbena of Discovery Country Suites in Tagaytay was a delightful experience when I gave Bubba his birthday treat in 2008.  No need to travel far south as Discovery Suites in Ortigas can perhaps replicate that.

The 22nd level of Discovery Suites leads to a modernly decorated lounge with plush interiors and expansive glass windows that provide a luminous visual of North Manila’s skyline.  Live piano music fills the air.  Candle lit lamp adds romance to each table.  The elegance and sophisticated charm of Serendipity Lounge of Discovery Suites extends to the restaurant adjoining it, 22 Prime –the very destination of that evening’s dinner.

On the Table

Bread Sticks/Bread and Three Spreads -Free

1st Dip: Skordalia

Potato puree, silky and smooth spread with a hint of lemon

2nd Dip: Sofrito

Tomato with olive oil

3rd Dip: Chicken Liver Pate

Very creamy with a hint of cheese pimiento

Chef Rick’s Cheese Bread PHP 140

Sun dried tomato bread, broiled four cheese topping with baby greens

Gooey warm cheese topped on three breads, soft and bursting with tantalizing flavors.  Served with baby greens in a mild citrus dressing sparkled with pink peppercorn.  Sun dried tomato and broiled four cheese together?  It’s an exercise in indulgence.

Their Prime Rib nights (PHP1, 195) are every Friday, 350 grams Prime Rib with soup and salad.  We opted to go for the Rib Eye instead since I’m not a big fan of meat sitting under the strobe of light for hours.

22 Prime Rib Eye Steak 400 grams PHP 1,295

USDA certified prime beef served with choice of two steak sauces from a selection of Forrest Mushrooms, Three Peppercorn, Teriyaki Barbeque, Three Mustard Cream and Horseradish Cream.

Horseradish is a staple in sauce option.  Instinctively, the decision was to go with Three Peppercorn, which is an obvious choice for me since I love peppercorn.  Option for the second sauce left a debate between Horseradish Cream and Forrest Mushroom.  Irresolute faces prompted Dors, the friendly and knowledgeable table attendant, to pipe in and recommend Horseradish between the two.  She was nice enough to throw in Forrest Mushroom as our third sauce though.

The accessories that came with the steak entrées to enhance the gourmet experience are Twice Baked Potatoes, Potato Gratin, Hand Cut French Fires, Potato Puree, Garlic Roasted Potatoes, Roasted Mushrooms, Spinach Gratin, Grilled Asparagus, Braised Baby Carrots and Grilled Zucchini.  Potato Gratin was the prime choice.

The steak was already split into two on its arrival. A blob of mashed potato artfully needled by crackers and roasted tomato twigged by a clump of herbs accompanied the Prime highlight of the meal.  I wanted the doneness to be medium while Bubba wanted medium well so I opted for the latter.

The first few bites were sheer beefy pleasure with fat that melts in your mouth.  Halfway through my steak though, the meat tends to be dry, which is a complete puzzle because the first half was juicier.  When Dors came to ask how was the steak, I told her that it was tad bit dry.  She said that it must be the doneness, which is a good point.  I’ve tried medium well so many times and it wasn’t usually as dry as the other half of the steak.  A spade is a spade.  It was really a bit dry.  I call it as I taste it.

Bubba enjoyed his part of the steak very much and said it was moist and tender.  The steak tasted luxurious and liked it better than the Wagyu we tried a month ago.  I agree with him only midway *wink* and didn’t finish the drier half of the steak.  He finished it for me.

Complimentary dessert –trio of dessert

Pandan cheesecake, mango panna cota, strawberry chocolate with whipped cream

The allure of Discovery Suites carries through its restaurant, 22 Prime.  This refined place served palatably creative food and offers service that is professional and attentive.  Service is top notch –Discovery is truly known for so many years.

Reasonably priced, enjoy an intimate dinner for two or celebrate with a group.  At the elegant 22 Prime, experience a meal that throws off sparks in a dining room that radiates in both service and gourmet food.

After the Jump in Macau

Finally, I reached the end of the fall.

My knees were wobbling and it took me a while before I regained my balance.

Despite the tormenting 2 minutes before the actual “jump” (or push), it is one of the most memorable experiences in this lifetime.  Up to this day, I cannot believe that I did the jump.  I walk with a different strut now… (erhm, just don’t watch the video).  What a thrilling and electrifying moment to be in the air with nothing but a harness to support your fall.

Sky Jump is one of Macau’s most exciting tourist attractions that should be a “don’t miss” experience.

At 233 meters, Macau Tower’s skyjump and bungee jump from the outer rim by world renowned AJ Hackett is the highest in the world.  How many people can say that they’ve jumped off that height?

Test your moxie!  Do you have the intestinal fortitude to do the jump?

Some of the Famous Towers

1. CN Tower                          Toronto, Canada                   1976                1,815 ft

2. Ostankino Tower                Moscow, Russia                  1967                1,771 ft

3. Oriental Pearl Tower                 Shanghai, China                   1995                1,535 ft

4. John Hancock Center    Chicago, USA                       1969                1,500 ft

5. Empire State Building New York, USA                             1931                1,454 ft

6. KL Tower                          Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia                1995                1,403 ft

11. Macau Tower                 Macau, SAR China                2001                1,109 ft

12. Tokyo Tower                  Tokyo, Japan                      1958                1,093 ft

13. Sky Tower                       Auckland, New Zealand                1997                1,067 ft

14. Eiffel Tower                     Paris, France                    1889                1,063 ft

We went back to the tower to get our photo and video package.  We shared an elevator ride with the other couple and we couldn’t stop laughing at what we just experienced.  The girl said that my 2-minute hesitation prepared her for her own plight.

A small crowd has already gathered outside the jump off point, where one guy is preparing for his bungee jump.

We went around the deck again and took some photos with the AJ Hackett staff.  Bubba bought a nice black and red AJ Hackett shirt.

The Statue of Kun Lam

We headed to another tourist attraction in Macau.  The Statue of Kun Lam Temple is supposed to be a blend between the traditional images of the goddess Guan Yin and Holy Mary.  Guan Yin is known to be The Goddess of Mercy who is a Buddhist Goddess who bestows clemency on people who sincerely repent their sins.

Portuguese artist Cristina Rocha Leiria designed the exquisite gigantic Kun Lam Statue.  The breathtaking 20-meter statue is made up of 48 polished bronze plates crafted in Nanjing and bolted together at the center stage along harbor waterfront.

The status is said to bring affluence in the country while the giant lotus flower pedestal is home to the Ecumenical Center, providing information on China’s major religions.  Entrance to the center is free.

We had a quick stopover at a small ramen house before heading to the next stop.

Macau Fisherman’s Wharf

The Fisherman’s Wharf is the biggest them park in Macau, claim to have an estimated cost of HK$1.9 billion.  Entrance to the site is free.  The park offers nightly explosions of the complex’s 40-meter high volcano, daily jet-ski stunt shows and souvenir shopping.  The complex houses 150 stores and restaurants in buildings built in the style of different world seaports such as Cape Town, Amsterdam and Venice, including six rides, slots hall and a 72-room hotel casino.

Back to the Venetian

It was a fantastic fun afternoon spent under the sun.  It was time to head back to the hotel to freshen up for dinner.

We toured the hotel and looked at some high-end shops.  There was a mini-performance in one of the sections of the hotel.

We finally picked a Portuguese restaurant for dinner.

Madeira Portuguese Restaurant

Madeira – While you are in Macau, why not taste the flavors of this city? Madeira serves Portuguese as well as Macanese dishes that are distinctly from Macau. Macanese dishes are a flavorful blend of cooking traditions from Portugal, Southeast Asia, India, Africa, Latin America and southern China. African chicken, curry crab and Bacalhau have been Macanese favorites for centuries.

It was the last evening of the 2008 Beijing Olympics and everyone in the restaurant looks astounded watching the replay of the opening ceremonies on television.

On the Table

Madeira Portuguese Restaurant

Shop 2408a (St. Mark’s Square)

Sun-Thurs 11:30 – 23:30

Fri- Sat 11:30 – 12:30

The Gondola Ride

After dinner, we walked around the beautiful St. Mark’s Square and moved from bridge to bridge.  Bubba insisted to take the graceful and romantic gondola ride down the Grand Canal but I declined.  I told him to save the Patacas instead.  Little did we know that the Gondola ride is free if you’re booked in the hotel… sigh, too bad.

We watched while others take the Gondola ride and listened to the sang wonderful Italian songs.  Despite the elegant Italian architecture and painting façades, there is that Venetian spirit of romance in the air.  The Venetian grandeur can be quite quixotic in certain areas.

Back to the Suite

Toyed with the camera in the room while resting.

Again, the plan that night was rest and refresh then check the clubbing scene but the relaxing suite made us fall asleep again and missed out.  The sofa sleeper is also comfortable to bunk in.

The next morning, after another hearty breakfast at Café Deco, we said goodbye to the Venetian and the sparkly Macau.

“We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.”
