Manang’s Clubhouse in Ateneo

After plurking/tweeting about grilled liempo, Richard challenged me to try the best liempo he’s ever tasted.  And this liempo can actually be found in Ateneo De Manila University.

On one agreed Wednesday in August, Richard and Irene picked me up from the office and we headed straight to my first choice of school, the ADMU grounds.  Manang’s Clubhouse is quite famous for dishing out the best tasting liempo around, plus other dishes, and at such an affordable price.

On the Table

Manang’s Famous Liempo PHP 45 (2)

Thanks to Richard, my eyes were opened to the great-tasting liempo of Manang’s –who has become such an icon in the school grounds.

The slim cut of liempo, appropriately priced, had the right amount of sweet and soy marinade that seeped into the meat.  The liempo was smoked perfectly leaving appetizing charred marks on the meat.

Ginataang Kalabasa at Sitaw PHP

Beans and Pumpkin in coconut cream was the perfect pair of the liempo.  It’s a healthy side dish that complemented the grilled meat.

Giniling

Sautéed ground pork in tomato sauce with green peas, carrot, green bell pepper and potato

Rice (3) PHP

Bubba followed quite late but he was able to taste the liempo (complaining that I only left him a few pieces) and I got another cup of rice because two just didn’t cut out for both our appetites with the delicious Filipino viands in front of us.

After eating, I bought 2 more orders of liempo to go, which Bubba and I enjoyed at home.  Next time, I’m going to buy more liempo to bring home and try their other dishes.

I’m from the rival school but if I knew Manang’s Clubhouse back in college, I wouldn’t mind driving all the way to Ateneo just to get lunch there.

By the way, CONGRATS to the Blue Eagles on the back-to-back UAAP basketball championship!!! 😉

72nd UAAP Men’s Basketball Finals (2009) Game 3: Battle for the Title

The Ateneo Blue Eagles aimed to bank back-to-back titles when they clinched the first win in the final series of the 72nd UAAP men’s basketball tournament last October 1.  The game ended with a 78-71 score with the Eagles leading the way by 13 points since the 1st quarter.  The UE warriors didn’t make it easy for the Eagles retorting with a 19-1 run before the end of the first half.  The Eagles however held on to their game with the 2008 Most Valuable Player Rabeh Al-Hussaini clutching an impressive game with 28 points and 14 boards and Jai Reyes piling sets of triples.

Game Two proved to be a totally different story.  University of the East made the most of the best-of-three finals bringing the series to a do or die match Game 3.  Ateneo received quite a blow from the Warriors being behind by 20 points after the final buzzer.  It’s been 24-years since UE scored a UAAP title and they want to discontinue that record this year.  Last time Ateneo pulled a back-to-back series was in 1987-88, Ateneo is vying to replicate that.

The heat is rising –a smoking Game Three to watch out for.

Game 2 Scores:

UE 88 -Espiritu 22, Llagas 19, Lee 13, Acuña 12, Lingganay 7, Reyes 6, Zamar 5, Duran 4, Tagarda 0, Bandaying 0.

ATENEO 68 -Al-Hussaini 18, Monfort 12, Reyes 11, Baclao 10, Austria 6, Salamat 4, Long 3, Chua 2, Buenafe 2, Sumalinog 0, Salva 0.

RP5 Banks a Win Against Kuwait

The RP Nationals won against Kuwait, 85-71 to claim another game victory in the 25th FIBA Asia Championship at the Tianjin Gym in Tianjin, China.  Powerade-Team Pilipinas was leading throughout the game with a comfortable 19 points lead in the 4th quarter stretch.

If China clinched a win against Jordan at 7pm today, the RP5 will avoid a possible confrontation with the Chinese. Then the Jordanians square off with the Philippines in a knockout quarterfinal match.

Cyrus Baguio led the RP team with 14 points while Asi Taulava finished in double figures with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

While Ateneans usually wear blue and La Sallians green, both schools wore yellow as a sign of national unity during its first meet to also honor the late former president Corazon Aquino.

PGMA’s Statement of Assets and Liabilities (SAL)

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s declared net worth doubled from P66.8 million in 2001 to P143.54 million in 2008, which means 114% growth.  In comparison to the other presidents, that growth rate is quite massive.  The late President Corazon Aquino’s declared net worth grew by only 4.8% from 1989 to 1992.  Fidel Ramos’ was 34.2% during his term while Joseph Estrada’s was 7.2% from 1998 to 1999.

The President’s allies said that the growth in assets must have come from real estate and stock earnings.

Malacañang claims that there are no irregularities in Pres. Arroyo’s wealth and denies that amassed wealth is from the government.

Note that the Statement of Assets and Liabilities is DECLARED.  Who checks the undeclared?

25th FIBA Asia Men’s Championship Update

Powerade-Team Pilipinas clinched its 77-70 victory against Chinese-Taipei yesterday after Willie Miller sunked a huge three-point shot.  The win is a good motivation going to a game versus defending champion Iran today.  In order to qualify for the knockout quarterfinals, Team Philippines must achieve at least one victory in its two remaining elimination round games.

Guiao is positive with the team’s chance against Iran if they continue the morale and shooting percentage from yesterday’s game.  Team Pilipinas sealed 15 of 30 three pointers with James Yap burying six triples, 3 in succession during the 3rd quarter, while Miller contributed five.  Another key element was RP team’s defense strategy that only allowed the Taiwanese shooters only one 3-point conversion in 15 attempts.

Pinoys Go Gaga Over the Lady

Tonight is the much-anticipated concert of Lady Gaga staged at Araneta Coliseum.  The tickets are supposedly sold out!  The concert produced by Ovation Productions is expected to seize an electrifying performance from Lady Gaga.  I’m not a big fan but if there’s one song that Lady Gaga can make me dance to, it’s “Just Dance.”  I loved it on the movie “Make it Happen” and it’s a cheer-upper when I hear it on the radio.

New P500 Bill Design

22-year old Revo Naval designed a P500 bill that features two democracy heroes, the late former senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. and the late former president Corazon Aquino.  The design was first posted on his site www.peaceloveandrevolution.com and soon newspapers caught up the bit.

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas said they are now considering the possible design of a new P500 bill that might have the same concept, recognizing the contributions of the couple to national unity.  Lay-outs might be ready by October and if approved, the first batch of P500 bills with Cory and Ninoy’s images will be out early 2010.

Meanwhile, Noy Noy Aquino, only son of the Aquinos, is open to running for a higher office if the need should arise.

Ateneo Blue Eagles Flight Deferred by UP Fighting Maroons

The first win of the UP Fighting Maroons (68) only meant the first loss for the Ateneo Blue Eagles (58) at the UAAP Season 72nd elimination round last Sunday, July 26.  After three straight losses, UP finally mustered a win and at the hands of a formidable foe this season.  Ateneo is on top of the standings with three wins in a row.

Former Ginebra player and current UST coach was also very proud of his boys when the oldest school in Manila gathered the first win against UE since 2006.  The UST Tigers pulled off a victory against the University of the East Warriors, 92-88, to inch up in the standings and claim the number #2 spot with 3-1 records, same as FEU Tamaraws.

The 5’6” Eman Monfort gave a big showing when its main man Rabeh Al-Hussaini struggled with foul trouble.  He had a very impressive game clutching 20 points that includes explosive six treys.

With a very good start this season, the Blue Eagles seem to not miss Chris Tiu’s presence on the bench.  Tiu has already completed 5 seasons of UAAP and is slated to move on.  Ateneo is gunning for a second championship with Rabeh Al Hussaini leading the pack.  Hussaini was last season’s MVP and was a powerful element in the championship win.

DLSU this year will be missing the sparkplug JV Casio and another frontliner in Rico Maierhofer.
