Nanka Steakhouse

A night out can start anywhere from a casual dining place to a home cooked dinner but often, especially if it’s a date night or anything celebratory, even just rewarding yourself with an indulgent meal in the middle of the day, a steakhouse would be a good place to start.  Yet with each restaurant bragging about its choice of meat, choosing the right spot can be a lot of headwork.  Well, let me take one guesswork out of the way and introduce Nanka.

Every now and then, you stumble upon a restaurant that is a great value, very unpretentious, and hits the G-spot of foodgasm.  Nanka boasts a gracefully sprawling dining area and the cake display on the right side as one of its key focal of the plush and comfortable dining room.  Its classic charm and decadence rest though on its menu selections.

The talented kitchen team is headed by Executive Chef Mike Santos.  Chef Mike always begins with high quality ingredients and use them in creative ways when needed, otherwise highlights its natural and organic flavors without masking or altering too much of its taste.

On the Table

Oyster Platter (Rockefeller, Hollandaise and Deep Fried)

We started off with the oyster platter.  It was hard to pick my favorite among the three variations as all were just utterly delicious and a great foolproof app to start with.

Grilled Ahi Tuna

Fresh sushi-grade ahi tuna, deep red and looking meaty in the middle, had beautiful grill marks on the edges and dusted with togarashi as the finish.  It was supple and had just the right light sear on the outside leaving the inside tender and almost downright raw in the middle.

Grilled Togarashi Prawns

Skewered plump prawns only seasoned very lightly and sprinkled with Japanese dried spice mix togarashi, else it feels almost untouched.  Most pieces were juicy, retained its natural sweet sap but a piece or two might’ve been just a tad bit over.  It didn’t hold me back munching more than my table share.

Tuna and Salmon Chirashi Bowl

Chirashi bowls are always wonderful. The expression of bright colors, speak of the freshness and delicateness each bowl represents over a heap of Japanese white rice.  The sashimi cuts were generous and tasted ocean-fresh-sweet, perfect to hit with a little intensity from the wasabi it’s served with. Nanka’s version offers the best value anywhere I’ve seen in terms of quality and price range.  Presentation could use a little nudge to pull it together to 100% perfection.

WX Ribeye

Obviously my favorite cut of steak – flavor tends to be richer than other cuts due to the marbling / fat distributed throughout the steak which provides an insane amount of flavor.  When grilled or pan-seared, it helps bring out the strong delicious flavors out.  Chef Mike makes the smart decision to let the quality of the meat stand out with only salt and pepper.  If meat is of American or Japanese wagyu, best to savor on its own, without any added flavors.  For those with a tongue for adventure, a selection of house-made sauces were readily available on the side to strike some fun with.

Grass-fed, grain-finished ultra-prime cut is melt in your mouth tender.  Nanka’s ribeye steak is succulent, tender and flavorful, with a slightly charred taste on its perimeter but still retains its effervescence in the inside.  Grilled and in its perfect temp, this continues to showcase the culinary prowess of the chef.

The remarkably tender meat went well with the wasabi salt on the side – which is also a brilliant idea.  Maybe another idea is to make zesty yuzu available.  The wasabi salt reminded me of a subtle herb taste which is spicy and slightly salty alternating.

A Weekend Escape at Art-Enthused U Hotels

My eyes flickered as I felt that the day was calling out to me. I had such a long, deep slumber that a quiet part of me didn’t want to move just yet but the adventurer in me wanted to explore more of the many hidden gems of Poblacion. My body started expanding as I stretched like a cat on the comfortable bed.

It is how any other weekend is supposed to be. Except I’m billeted at the first art hotel in Poblacion, Makati – U Hotels. U Hotels Makati celebrates both culture and comfort as they bring together the luxuries of staying in a modern hotel, and the artistry of talented local artists, which mimics the vibrant street scene that Poblacion is known for.

Relaxed, peaceful and an escape from your usual day to day, U Hotels Manila stands fairly new in the hotel scene, but in the short span of time it has opened its doors to city dwellers looking for a respite and art-filled nest, it has brought in countless of reviews from satisfied clientele that keep rating them high on Tripadvisor.

The U Story

The U in U Hotels Makati also stands for the last names of the inspired minds behind this hotel destination. Alfredo Yu was a fixture in the hotel industry for several years. Together with his wife Elena, they ventured into purchasing real estate with the dream of building their own chain. Their children, Carter and Alex, shared the same aspirations and would later come up with a thriving budget hotel in the city of Manila. Fast forward to 2017, the siblings found themselves wanting to build another hotel, but this time they decided, it has to be something uncommon. Their objective was to draw travelers not just for the friendly accommodation rates, but more for the differentiator – which only U Hotels can offer.

The entrance to U Hotels, literally welcomes you with a greeting. The façade in the lobby shows the word “Welcome” in different languages – an idea suggested by one of the owners’ kids. Artist and calligrapher Avin Del Rosario, combined these greetings with illustrations of paper planes, as U Hotels welcomes varying clients, some local, but most are travelers from different parts of the world.

This same vibe reverberates in all corners of the lobby, with comfortable sofas, chairs, benches and tables that are available for guests to use for meetings or simply hanging out. Free flowing coffees and cookies accompany your fast internet connection provided by the hotel.

The comforting vibe continues upon stepping into my room. The room is fully equipped with accommodation necessities like a mini-bar, safety lock, business table, LCD TV, and luggage rack. I took notice of the carefully added details in the room.

Don’t rush into the morning but instead wake up to a peaceful setting. I headed to the ground floor where U Hotels offers a hearty breakfast together with your stay. The selections are made up of both traditional Filipino favorites, as well as other cuisines. This spread can be found daily at the lobby lounge. For the rest of the day, you can order from a menu of heirloom dishes that the hotel carefully curated for you to enjoy.

Mireio Terrace Weekend Brunch

You know why brunch is the most awesome meal of the day?  It’s an indication it’s likely the weekend!  Who’s enjoying a brunch on a Monday?  No one, that’s who.  Of course, Saturdays or Sundays are the classic brunch days, nothing on your mind, no work, you can be stuffing your face all day since you know you’ve got a free day to relax and digest it all.

Sunday saw me and CP breaking monotony and heading out to Raffles Makati to check out Mireio Terrace.  Mireio offers a weekend brunch that I am excited to tell you about.  It’s great for their guests because a few leisure steps and they’re there!  Dress as you like.  No matter how stylish the venue is, it’s completely acceptable to turn up in last night’s clothes.  In fact, it’s almost expected.  Wink.

A line-up of handcrafted desserts from mouthwatering cakes, milli crepe cakes, cookies, tarts welcome you as you enter.  Brunch is pretty much the only meal that it’s tolerable to mix sweet and savory.  There is even a station for delicious made-to-order fresh crepes.  In one area, a cheese board nudges at you with a number of flown in artisanal cheese and freshly baked breads.

What’s making most of the weekend without ordering Mireio’s signature cocktails to start?  It’s almost mandatory to have a Bloody Mary, Mimosa, or a glass of champagne to wash down the mountain of food we are about to partake in.  And you know, just celebrate.  Celebrate life.  Celebrate food.

On the Table

Assorted appetizers welcome your palate with tastes that fill the dining room with bright Sunday sunshine.

Gravlax De Mahi Mahi, Coriander, Citron, Duile d’Olive, Herbes

Terrine Charcuterie Maison, Pickles d’ail et d’Echalottes

Pissaladiere

The pretty wooden board carrying the three-way platter was a feast for the eyes as the wait staff set it on our table.  The visual wasn’t the only work of art as the mish mash of the elements go well together on your palate.  I started with the homemade terrine with garlic and pickled shallots.  I enjoyed the French forcemeat loaf since it is very similar to pâté, but with a coarse grainier texture in between bites.  To add a layer of crunch, I spread it on top of the toast.  It crackles inside the mouth with livery goodness.

The Mahi Mahi Gravlax with Coriander, Lemon, Olive Oil, Herbs breaks that meaty and uncommonly rich and murky taste of terrine.  It’s light and silky, with the slightest hint of brine.  The fried capers add that sharp piquancy.

Nicoise Salad

Like the day couldn’t get any sunnier, we are served with the nicoise salad.  Crisp spears of lettuce, baby potatoes, crunchy green beans, crumbles of boiled egg, black olives and onions, perfect sweet tomatoes, and chunks of the freshest tasting tuna that’s slightly seared.  I mean c’mon, salads don’t really make me excited but this one, it’s just so beautiful.  In texture, taste and all the characters in it in a touch of creamy dressing.

The second part of the Mireio Weekend Brunch was to select your egg dish.  The choice is simple, Egg Benedictine or Scrambled Eggs.  Wrong, it’s not that simple.  Both looked great on paper.  Good thing, CP and I decided to get one of each so we can try both.

Egg Benedictine, Beef Tongue, Bearnaise, Iberico Ham, Herbs

I love eggs benedict but CP turned out more inclined to this dish.  He liked it so much, he took a photo and posted it on Instagram.  Yay!

Scrambled Eggs, Black Truffle, Juice, Chives

The sun came down from the skies and transformed into this dish.  I’m not just talking about the bright yellow orange hue that grabs me visually, like it was smiling at me, but the texture, oh the texture of that scrambled egg dish with black truffle.  It’s simultaneously smooth and creamy yet with lumpy luscious sections that can make you whimper a little bit.  Reminds me of Australia Dairy Co. scrambled egg breakfasts in Hong Kong, which regularly has a queue that stretches around the block almost all day.

Set a date with my not-so-little brother, James, and asked him what he is craving for to shortlist the restaurants we could possibly try.  Unlike my not-so-little sister Joanne, planning lunch with Shoti James was a lot easier since he gave me an answer.  Shobe Joanne would just say “any” or “up to you.”  Well, 1 out of 10 times, she’d say “shrimps” or “crab” or “steak” but that’s 1 out of 10 so imagine how rare that is.  I also have to ask my brother since he was a practicing vegetarian but I wasn’t sure if he was past that phase or still at it.

“I eat anything now.  How about something Middle Eastern?”

DONE.  I knew where to bring him but hesitated because it’s not exactly a joy ride to drive to Manila.  I remember where my friend Nolan, one of my favorite music video directors, brought me one time in 2013 for Middle Eastern food.

Picked up my brother around 1130am last Saturday and lucky day, the traffic was pretty light and the road trip to Manila took only 30 minutes.  Before we know it, we were looking at the menu and trying to figure out what to order.

On the Table

Half BBQ Mix Grill Php 800

I think this is their version of a platter that gives you a sampler of their different meats but also comes with 3 kinds of appetizer.  Bang for your buck.

A Household with Alaska

Moooooooo!  I can go mooing like a cow with how much milk my body has consumed ever since I was a tot.  Yea, we’ve all heard milk as the best source of calcium and all of its other health benefits like increased bone strength, smoother skin, stronger immune system, prevention of hypertension, dental decay, dehydration, osteoporosis, cancer and other chronic ailments.  But kids at their young age don’t care for all of those.  I surely didn’t.  I cared a lot about the taste.  I still care a lot about taste.  If the taste is delish, I gotta have some more of that.  In our household, my mom made sure that us children drank milk everyday, at least twice a day, even when I got way older.  She sure didn’t have to bend my arm since I love milk.

Drinking milk or consuming it through food or other dairy product like cheese, ice cream, flavored milk, creamer has been a regular activity.  For most eating parts, I remember seeing the brand Alaska in the pantry, or in the kitchen, or on the table for any milk needs in dishes.  Breakfast of champorado (Filipino version of chocolate rice porridge) was always accompanied by a can of Alaska Evaporated milk to thin out the heaviness of the cocoa and to add that delicate milky taste.  It’s on the table for our pouring pleasure.  Sopas (Filipino version of Chicken Soup) was always cooked in our household with Alaska Evaporated milk.  Pancakes, the batter with Alaska Evaporada, the finished product with Alaska Condensada.  I knew Alaska first as our go to canned milk and not as a US state. 🙂

Parents think about milk consumption as part of a healthy and balanced diet.  The beneficial health nutrients obtained from milk are essential for the human body and help prevent a number of chronic illnesses.  But how can one make it a staple part of any kid’s diet if it doesn’t taste yummy?  It has to be yummy.  It has to be smack their lips yummy.  My cute nephew, the little rascal I dub Little Popeye as he can be quite grouchy, is very picky when it comes to taste, texture, flavors.  I think most 4-year old tots are like that.  They have barely any regard for rules.  They like what they like.  You can’t tell them what to like.

So nutrition has to be smarter these days.  It has to be sustainable.  It has to be naturally loved by kids.  And milk has to be g-double-o-d good.  That’s why I got a little excited that the trusted brand I’ve known for decades has powdered milk fortified with Vitamin A for eyesight, Vitamin D for healthy bones and teeth, Zinc and 20+ essential nutrients.  I know my nephew will totally dig it!  My sisters and I loved the brand growing up.  It’s time to pass on the buck and have Little Popeye supplied with an energy boost for school time and play time.

I let my nephew, Little Popeye, and my sister Joyce try Alaska Powdered Milk and it passed with flying colors because it’s enjoyable to drink.  Click PLAY on the YouTube video below to check out their reactions.  They’re a little shy so it’s a quick snapshot of them snickering and letting Tita Janey video them.

September 12, 2016 is Eid al Adha or Feast of Sacrifice Special Non Working Philippine Holiday

The day of Eid al-Adha, or Feast of Sacrifice will fall on September 12, 2016, Tuesday. A Presidential Proclamation apparently will be signed for September 12, 2016 declaring the national non-working holiday in observance of Eid al Adha or Feast of Sacrifice.

Celebrated annually by Muslims around the world, Eid al-Adha starts after the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia.  The Eid al-Adha is approximately 70 days after the end of the month of Ramadan

Food Therapy and Capturing via Huawei P9’s Leica Lens

Plagued with many major projects I’m leading at work, I haven’t found a quiet time to write leisurely lately.  But you and I both know that that doesn’t mean I have slowed down in my eating.  Enjoying the pleasures of good food by big volumes is imprinted in my genetic coding.  It’s been my escape, yet that regular moment where no matter where you are at this stage in your life, no matter how many tasks are in your list, you just pause and dedicate a time for it.

Allow me to round up my Top 10 food therapy (also known as, all that’s in Janey’s Diary) lately.

1. Maple’s Beef Tapa Steak

It’s one of my favorite places for tapa.  Mind you, this is not the tapa we are all used to that’s cut up in strips.  It’s that tapa marinade, slightly sweet and soy-savory, coating a bone-in steak then grilled to medium or medium well or however you like it.  It is served with your choice of two eggs, in my case sunny side up, and very garlicky garlic rice.  It’s accompanied by local pickled papaya (atchara), vinegar and mango tomato relish to cut down the richness and balance the whole meal.  This IS the breakfast of champions.

2. Inagiku’s Aburi Uni

Makati Shangri-La continues to be my favorite hotel since it houses my favorite hotel restaurants and service has always been impeccable ever since I was young and we take family staycations here.  Shang Palace is my first choice here but close second is their Japanese restaurant, Inagiku.  There is so much to order here like their sashimi and sushi platter served in a gigantic boat.

Aburi means grilled and Uni is sea urchin.  Best sea urchin dish in this side of the town.  It’s velvety in texture, has that grilled smoky taste, unfolding that natural sweetness of uni while accentuating that very unique briny yet bright taste of uni.

3. Maple’s Chili

Since this is also a staple order when I’m at Maple, this deserves to be included here.  Maple serves one of the best chili’s in town, outside ahem mine, and the only one that has the perfect corn bread to go with it.  Theirs is Jalapeno Corn Bread.  Need I say more?  Problem with my last visit, the bread seemed to have shrunk from its normal size.  Still at Php 155, Maple’s Chili was perfect for the call of the weather lately.

4. Salvatore Cuomo’s Scampi Pasta

The hottest restaurant in town these days.  I’ve gone twice in 5 days and was just there last Monday.  Ordered quite a number of dishes which will make up most of this list.  What stood out most is Salvatore Cuomo’s Scampi Pasta, full of that scampi flavor tossed in linguini pasta with at least 4 scampi to pick on. Mmm-mm!

5. Salvatore Cuomo’s Caprese

Fresh, light, healthy and deeeee-li-cious!

The group at Salvatore Cuomo two Wednesdays ago.  Special shout out to Laine who I bumped into that night who sent over Tiramisu.

On my next visit a few days later, I ordered Salvatore’s porterhouse steak, ribeye steak and lamb.  No, it’s not too much food.  Just right.

July 6, 2016 is Eidul Fitar Special Non Working Holiday Philippines

We have a holiday this week folks!!!  This coming Wednesday, July 6, is declared a non-working holiday by Malacanang to celebrate Eid al-Fitr or Eidul Fitar.  The declaration was made today, July 4.

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

According to Presidential Spokesman Ernie Abella, the declaration pinning July 6 as a non-working holiday has already been signed by President Rodrigo Duterte.

I’m sure all of us have been working crazy hard more than usual and carrying more weight than we can muster.  Aren’t we all looking forward to the non-working holidays in the Philippines???

Betadine Dry Powder Spray

Yesterday my left foot got caught on a rope lying around the ABS grounds near the tents being set up. I fell almost smacking my face on the ground but my bag and arm broke my fall. Bruised my knees and scratched my arm and palm. Would normally grab the green bottle of Betadine to clean my wounds (which my family has been using since I was a kid.  Clinical studies have shown BETADINE helps wounds heal fast) but remembered they sent over their new product a few weeks ago.

BETADINE DRY POWDER SPRAY. Cleaned my graze with our trusted antiseptic but instead of liquid dripping into the wound, it’s a no-touch, no-drip, no-swab or cotton buds way to treat scrapes.

I also like the fact that they got Caroline Wozniacki as endorser, 4th youngest to reach the world Top 20!  She says she treats her wounds immediately with Betadine Dry Powder Spray.  Since it’s a spray and no touch formula, she doesn’t have to carry cotton buds, swabs or anything else in her bag.  It’s just spray and go.

Meeting HGTV’s Property Brothers in Manila

These have been buried in my album for a year.

Throwback to the day HGTV brought the Property Brothers to Manila.

Scripps’ MD Derek: “Jane closed the HGTV deal in the Philippines. She made it happen.”

Twin bros Jonathan and Drew suddenly and simultaneously just motioned to land one on my cheek.

Janey: “Hey, can we take a decent one please?  My mom is strict.”

(Laughter)

Snap.

I was just all smiles.

Inner Confidence from MAXI-PEEL

You know what they say about self-confidence.  You can’t touch it but you can definitely feel it.  To be confident is to be beautiful.  However, it does help a lot if our natural beauty shines through without any complication such as skin problems, acne, etc.

Cable channels have a lot of shows where you see that success as a model or TV personality wasn’t about being perfect – no one was.  It was mainly about how you carried yourself and how self-assured you appeared.

But truth be told, no matter how confident we are of who we are in life and how many people truly love us, we do look in the mirror and want to be able to hold our head up high, with poise and self-confidence.  It is easier to do that, with healthier skin.

That’s the reason why even if we are comfortable with who we are which really defines our appeal from appearance to inner strength, the strength of our confidence lies on how we feel about our physical look.  It’s no longer about what others think of you but what we think of ourselves.

Mama Empanada

The empanada yo momma doesn’t know about.  Okay, she does know about it.  She should.  Mama knows best and Mama Empanada could just very well be the best empanadas I’ve tried in Manila.

One is definitely not enough.  I am talking about a box right.  Because there’s no question that one piece just won’t cut it.  One box ain’t enough.  I could finish all twelve glorious golden pieces, its crust beautifully baked to a nice gentle crunch.  And inside that crisp outer dome, softness gushes from within this pastry.
