Tis the Season to be at Hotel Jen Manila

People often ask, “Can you recommend a good hotel?”  My go to answer will always be any of the Shangri-La group of hotels.  Hong Kong-based Shangri-La International Hotel Management Ltd. manages a new genre of hotels called Hotel Jen.

A friend of mine was in Singapore a couple of weeks ago to watch the Taylor Swift concert there with her daughter.  They stayed at Hotel Jen in Singapore and we exchanged notes as I shared with her that I spent last weekend at Hotel Jen in Manila.

Hotel Jen is a diverse collection of hotels in the best locations across Asia Pacific, with a unique brand of style and service delivery designed to appeal to a new “Jen-eration” of travelers.  Hotel Jen is the transformation of Shangri-La’s Traders Hotels.  Since these hotels have opened, it’s been offering fresh, friendly and fuss-free intuitive service to independently minded business and leisure travelers.

New Year’s Eve Countdown to 2014

New Year’s Eve and 1st of January are some of my top favorite days of the year.  Since something came earlier than anticipated and it got me on a moody sprint for 3 days, I didn’t plan anything for the New Year except go watch some fireworks and hear good music.

Madz picked me up past 10pm and it was close to pinching a nerve since it’s the 2nd consecutive time she was late and I didn’t want to be late in meeting Val and Cha, who spent New Year Eve’s with us last year as well at the Ayala New Year’s Event Countdown.

When we got to Eastwood Activity Center, it was already crawling with people.

But like a blessing, we were able to find a not so bad spot on the bridge with a good view of the side of the stage.  It wasn’t the greatest but it definitely could have easily been a worse spot gauging at the size of the crowd by the time we arrived.

Christmas Day 2012

I cringed missing the Up Dharma Down set by half an hour.  Close to 11pm, things were already rolling and the hosts introduced the co-main event of the night… Bamboo, who I had an ultimate crush on many years ago.  I remember having to be an event photographer for one of his concerts for Asia Brewery in 2006 by CW’s request.  Even if I just had to click on the shutter button, it was so hard to concentrate as most of the time I was just gaping by the edge of the stage watching him perform.  I was inches or a couple of feet away from him –almost the only one near/fronting the stage.  It took a lot not to go up and just give him a big hug.  Okay, the bouncers nearby with fridge for a chest had a lot to do with the decision.

Bamboo was the best act of the Eastwood Countdown event.  People were cheering and singing with him.  The energy of the immense crowd was building up and everyone was just full of good vibes.   Maddie and I were shouting like buffoons and rocking it with him, not caring about anyone else moving a few inches away thinking we just got out of the asylum.  It was also heartwarming when he asked for a moment of silence for the earthquake and Yolanda victims, showing a video snippet of the devastation and unity that the tragedy brought.  The photos showed Filipino resiliency and how strong our hearts are.  It was a prelude to his song, Pinoy Ako.

Jessica Sanchez followed Bamboo’s segment.  Shortly, it was close to midnight.  The hosts came back on stage with both main acts, Viber’s brand manager and Megaworld’s President Kevin Tan.  The countdown ensued and at the end of it, the fireworks painted the night sky.  I called home and greeted my family a Happy New Year.  I wish they were with me again this year.  But hearing their voices and communicating the love were good enough that night.

Even if we weren’t able to bond much with Val and Cha that night, we didn’t miss the chance to take a few photos together.

I wanted to hang out more but saw that Cha’s eyes looked very tired.  They were at the venue since 6pm and had dinner at Eastwood so we had to let them go.  Sharwin joined us that night and kept me and Madz company.

I don’t know if we expended his energy but we tried to be on our best behavior.

An hour after the countdown, JM joined us and we headed to the Fort for some dance music.  Fort was packed!  Urbn and Aracama both had lines even at 3am.  We considered going to Skye but after the difficult parking, just ended up staying in the area already.

Despite the sort-of-funny crowd, Maddie and I somewhat danced the night-dawn away and just reveled in the music.  We were still in our best behavior.  🙂

September 10, 2010 is a REGULAR Holiday

***UPDATE as of Sept. 3, 2010***

Malacanang has issued Proclamation No. 26 declaring Friday, September 10, 2010 as a Regular Holiday throughout the country to promote national consciousness on the religious and culutural significance of the Eid’l Fitr (Feast of Ramadhan).

In this regard, employees who will be assigned to work on this day will be given premium pay in accordance with their company’s existing policies.

—-

Will there be a special non-working holiday this month of September?

We’re all anticipating President Noynoy’s announcement.

Last year, September 21, 2009 was declared as a national holiday by Malacañang in observance of Eid’l Fitr.

A lot are asking if September 10, 2010 (Friday) will be declared as a holiday.

Many opinions say it should be declared as one.  It’s like saying there’s no Christmas holiday.

If P-Noy/Malacañang does decide to announce it as a holiday, it would probably be declared by tomorrow or latest Sunday.

Holiday or not!

Take your family or your significant other

out on a date in the Metro (or just at the outskirts of it) 😉

Celebrate LIFE!

August 23, 2010 is no longer a non-working holiday

Malacañang announced yesterday that August 23, which falls on a Monday, will remain a regular working day, contrary to earlier declaration of it being a special non-working holiday under PGMA’s holiday economics.  P-Noy declared August 21, which is a Saturday and the actual date of Ninoy Aquino’s death anniversary, as the non-working holiday.

A statement from the presidential palace said President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III is empowered under Republic Act 9492 to modify holidays by law, order or proclamation.

“The purpose for observing Ninoy Aquino Day on August 21 instead of August 23 is to avoid the imposition of unnecessary financial burden upon the employers, ensure the continuity of government, business, and commercial transaction, promote productivity, while at the same time preserve the solemnity of the observance,” the statement read.

I feel for those of you who have already made vacation plans around this “supposedly” non-working holiday.  I guess the solution is either you cancel it or file a vacation leave from your respective companies (I know it’s a dent on your VL or paycheck but what can we do, it’s been decided on).  Anyway, August 30 is still a regular holiday at this time.  You might want to move your plans to that date 😀

And if you’re not skipping town… you might want to have a date in the Metro (or just at the outskirts of it) 😉

I would like to congratulate Sen. Aquino for his spectacular victory. I call upon this nation to unite and support him.

I would like to thank everyone who supported me especially my volunteers and those who gave up their limited resources as a manifestation of trust in my brand of leadership and track record.

I ran a very truthful, straightforward and candid campaign and thought we could run on the basis of our platform, track record and volunteerism.

I would like to congratulate all the winners and pray that they serve our country well.

We accept the will of the people.

Today, we have a victory for democracy with the successful exercise of our first nationwide automated election despite naysayers and doubters.

Your Vote is Your Voice- May 10, 2010 is Special Public (Non-working) Holiday

Malacanang has issued Proclamation No. 2020 declaring Monday, May 10, 2010 as a Special Public (Non-Working) Holiday throughout the country to give the people the fullest opportunity to participate in the said elections.

In this regard, employees who will be assigned to work on this day will be given premium pay in accordance with their company’s existing policies.

May 3, 2010 is a Non-working Holiday

I never thought I’d see the day when May 1 will be moved to another day as a special non-working holiday.  Apparently, May 1, 2010’s ‘premium’ privileges will be applied to May 3, 2010 as President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo declared today that this coming weekend will be a long weekend once again in the Philippines.

The Malacañang announced that May 3 will be a non-working holiday in the country so as to give Filipinos a chance to observe Labor Day.

Malacanag has issued Proclamation No. 2043 declaring May 03, 2010 (Monday) as a regular holiday to celebrate “Labor Day”,

which in effect supersedes Proclamation No. 1841 where May 1, 2010 (Saturday) was declared as regular holiday.

Executive Secretary Leandro Mendoza said that since Labor Day this year falls on a Saturday, Malacanang has decided to move the observation of the holiday on the nearest working day, which is May 3 or this Monday.  This is supposedly keeping with the government’s holiday economics policy.

Wage boards are expecting a different announcement from PGMA though.  An announcement that their wage hike petitions be favored.  Labor officials confirmed this week that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will not make any wage increase announcements on Labor Day.

I can’t wait to cast my vote in this upcoming national election.  I’m also excited for first time voters who got to register and will exercise their right to vote on May 10, 2010.

I wonder how the automated election will go.  I pray that whoever wins the presidency or the LGU seats, at the very least, it was really an honest election… with the right count and no tampering of the actual results.

May 2010 Holidays (Labor Day and National Elections) **UPDATE** May 3, 2010, Monday, declared as non-working holiday by PGMA

***UPDATE as of April 28, 2010 1:54 PM: PGMA announced May 3 as a non-working HOLIDAY!***

(wow, I wonder how the KMU will feel about this declaration)

May 1 falls on a Saturday this year. I wonder if it will be moved to another weekday as a non-working holiday? But I heard that some groups lobby that the commemoration won’t be moved since there’s importance to celebrating May 1 on exactly its day. My mind needs another holiday seriously.

Anyone who knows if May 1 will be moved? Has PGMA announced anything?

May 10, 2010 is Philippines’ National Election Day so there’s definitely no work on that specific Monday. PLEASE PLEASE GO AHEAD AND VOTE and VOTE WISELY.

Palace Retracts November 27-28 Holiday, Except in ARMM

November 27-28, 2009 is no longer a national/regular holiday.  Malacañang has issued Proclamation No. 1808-A on October 26, 2009 declaring Feast of Eid’l Adha as Regional Holiday in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao only.  This means business as usual in Metro Manila.

People in the Metro who have booked flights/vacation on that supposedly long weekend holiday must be really upset with the holiday “retraction” in Metro Manila.  Businessmen must be pretty pleased about it (quite understandable).  I almost booked a flight.

Trade Secretary [Peter] Favila and the Department of Trade and Industry appealed for the change in behalf of the business community to limit the nonworking holiday to the ARMM because of the number of holidays declared for November plus the fact that we are still recovering from the twin tragedies of Ondoy and Pepeng that hit Metro Manila and Luzon,” Remonde
