Ateneo and DLSU Face Again in Round 2 This Sunday

It was only last Sunday when the Araneta Coliseum was filled to the brim with ADMU and DLSU fanatics.  The Ateneo de Manila University won that game against De La Salle University 76-72 in overtime.  This coming Sunday, watch out for another tight bball battle as the two school favorites face each other again in the second round of the 72nd University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) men’s basketball tournament.

While Ateneans usually wear blue and La Sallians green, both schools wore yellow as a sign of national unity during its first meet to also honor the late former president Corazon Aquino.

Ateneo Blue Eagles Flight Deferred by UP Fighting Maroons

The first win of the UP Fighting Maroons (68) only meant the first loss for the Ateneo Blue Eagles (58) at the UAAP Season 72nd elimination round last Sunday, July 26.  After three straight losses, UP finally mustered a win and at the hands of a formidable foe this season.  Ateneo is on top of the standings with three wins in a row.

Former Ginebra player and current UST coach was also very proud of his boys when the oldest school in Manila gathered the first win against UE since 2006.  The UST Tigers pulled off a victory against the University of the East Warriors, 92-88, to inch up in the standings and claim the number #2 spot with 3-1 records, same as FEU Tamaraws.

Memento Got Me Drunk

The biggest event that happened last Saturday night, July 18, was URCC XIV Aggression where Bubba refereed 4 matches, including the two main events.  One thing displeasing to note though was the event started really late than usual and ended close to 1AM when it usually finishes by 1030pm or 11pm.  I guess the melodrama in some of the matches particularly the first match added to the late conclusion of the event.  My friend Jody who got the 1K seat was only able to stay until 1030pm, which is just the start of the 5th match because he had an early morning Globe benefit run at the Fort.

Well, another major event occurred that night (slash July 19’s morning) and it took place at a small bar called Memento –and that event was lil ol’ me getting drunk after several years.  I can’t even remember the last time I was drunk.  The ultimate I can remember was probably 9 years ago, sophomore year in college.

Right after the URCC event, we dropped off Madz in Ortigas and headed straight to Bautista Street to look for Memento bar.  It was both our first time at the venue and thankfully it wasn’t such a difficult place to find.

The party already started by 11pm and getting there by 130am, you’d expect everyone drunk.  The Sabi peeps were playing Carlo’s famous Do or Drink Game now programmed in his PDA phone.  Mon, who also watched URCC with 5 other friends including Chay, got to the venue ahead of us.

We were reveling in the party mood when Carlo suddenly put me on the spotlight and ordered me to take this drink called “Boy Bastos.”  What a name for a drink huh?  I think it’s supposed to be 11 hard drinks mixed into one (gross…) Memento is known for its Boy Bastos drink and Beer Bong challenge.  It’s their claim to fame and it’s obvious from their photo walls.

I naturally begged off as I do every time I am put on the spot.  However, Carlo didn’t let me get away this time.  Being his and Cam’s birthday, I just couldn’t refuse plus the crowd was cheering us (Chris, Mon, and I) on.  Not wanting to be a party pooper, I went to the bar nervous about drinking the tall glass.

The server conked the glasses against the bar signaling that it’s time to chug down the mix.  I grabbed my glass like a tough cowboy in a Salon and guzzled all the liquid and tapped the glass on the bar as soon as I finished.  I was the first one to finish the drink!!! YAY!  Who says a girl can’t drink?

I look back and saw that it was Camille who joined the fun and not Mon.  Mon and NA followed after us.

My tummy grumbled.  I was hungry but I was also trying to hold my drink down.  What was in that drink?  Mon, Chris and I did some URCC MMA recap over the loud music.  The Do or Drink game continued.

In Martini’s drunkenness, he was still able to coin a new Happy Birthday greeting, “Hababerdie!”  (Oh and the following day, he dreamnt he was back in Sabi but resigned after one day haha.)

Carlo let me order more food (yippee!!!), which pumped my energy as always.  Their food bar price wasn’t so bad either.  I really liked the chicken fingers, cheese sticks and chicharon bulaklak.  I was laughing hysterically at the most miniscule things and I was enjoying seeing NA lash out on a good trip as well.  Carlo tells me that her moments of drunkenness are usually mellow –same as mine actually.

Not long after, the wait staff said it was their final call for orders that also queued that the place was closing.  My watch says 330am, still pretty early to close.

We kissed everyone goodbye and dropped NA off her place.  We gave Carlo a ride as well while Martin and Mon were left behind.  I am not too sure if Martin was able to take Mon home or vice-versa.  Martin was so drunk too and  It was quite an experience to go home feeling drunk after quite some time and that feeling of silliness that goes with it.  Little did I know that the next day was going to be a day of major hangover.

It was worth it.

“Life is partly what we make it, and partly what it is made by the friends we choose.”

Belated Happy Birthla to Cams (July 18) and Happy Birthla TODAY to Carlo (July 24)!  I love you both (that’s why I’m not posting your ages here)!

UAAP Season 72

Ateneo clinched its third straight victory against the UST Tigers, 93-77 in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament at the Philsports Arena the other day.  Prior to the match-up, both schools held an unbeaten record in the first round of the recently opened season.

The 5’6” Eman Monfort gave a big showing when its main man Rabeh Al-Hussaini struggled with foul trouble.  He had a very impressive game clutching 20 points that includes explosive six treys.

With a very good start this season, the Blue Eagles seem to not miss Chris Tiu’s presence on the bench.  Tiu has already completed 5 seasons of UAAP and is slated to move on.  Ateneo is gunning for a second championship with Rabeh Al Hussaini leading the pack.  Hussaini was last season’s MVP and was a powerful element in the championship win.

DLSU this year will be missing the sparkplug JV Casio and another frontliner in Rico Maierhofer.

Happy Happy Birthla folks!  Make sure you leave everything at bay and enjoy your special day.

Urameshiya Part Deux

It was another long weekend.  This time we did not make any out-of-town plans and enjoyed Manila in its relaxing and calm condition.  Friday night weather was made for sleeping in.  Thursday evening was spent with my friend Chai at Jalapeño.  It was a girl on girl tête-à-tête over delish Mexican food.  She left later that night for Baguio (came back Sunday night) but met up with me first to get last minute tips for her trip to Vietnam –Cambodia last Monday.  She’s repeating the trip Bubba and I had during the Holy Week break.  Too bad she was only going to Phnom Penh.  I would love for her to experience Angkor Wat and the Hub Street at Siem Reap.

It rained hard Thursday night.  I slept at 4am Friday because I was up all night watching The Greatest American Dog.  I finished the whole season in one sitting!  I loved it to bits –the show’s concept, theme per episode, challenges that match with that week’s theme, casting and especially the loyalty of the dogs!  With the heavy rain and thunders, 3 episodes made me weep silently in the cold room.  I love it so much I can’t wait for Star World to show the next season.

Anyone here who watched the series?  Who was your favorite?  I have two!

I digress.  Friday afternoon was spent playing briefly in the tournament.  Right after, I visited Big Ace in Shaw Boulevard for the first time.  They have an early bird rebate, which is quite a witty strategy to mobilize early players.  After three hours of playing while Bubba gets a haircut, his watch and a mall roundabout, he picks me up for a Friday night dinner date.

We wanted to brave South Super Hi-Way and go for a “south food adventure,” but I thought of going back to Little Tokyo.  It hasn’t even been two weeks yet and I am heeding to the call of Urameshiya.  The two weeks felt like months as I have yearned to be back and taste their beef the very next day.  And so off we went to Makati.

On the Table

Takoyaki PHP 100

This was ordered from the other restaurant.

I want to try the Okonomiyaki too at Kagura as recommended by my former intern Eisen, but saved it for another day.

Tarafoku Set PHP 1,850

I wanted to order the Wagyu set but my eyes bulged out at the sight of the new menu price.  Previous price was at PHP 2,800 and now it’s PHP 3,300.  I deliberated but since it was Bubba’s treat, I went to the safe and more economical side and ordered the same Tarafoku set which is also more expensive by PHP 200.

The quality of beef is still superb.  Bubba did most of the cooking although I wanted to help out.  It seems like he was enjoying himself with the thong and the plates of various meat.  Amiable service from the wait staff  is still consistent in its efficiency and promptness.

After eating, we stayed a bit for beer and watched Prison Break Season 4 on Bubba’s Mac.  It wasn’t as exciting as the first season though.
