Chatime Tea, Why Don’t Cha?

I never realized that the Milk Tea fever will explode this big.  Foodie friends and non-foodie friends got hooked initially on Serenitea and some eventually switched their coffee time with cold tea drinks.  I was never a big fan of coffee although I love the smell and I take it once in a while during meetings but I was pretty much taken by Serenitea since late 2009We visit frequently in a week and somehow got addicted to it.

Family of drinkers

Now, they have about 5 branches since they opened since 2 years ago.  I did lessen my visits when prices hiked up, and even limited orders of my favorite peppered corn.  Bubble Tea opened along Wilson Street and my Twin and I usually pick that spot for our chat/bonding/catch-up time.  Happy Lemon, a new player in the market, has followed suit and started making waves in the Greenhills area since it opened late last year.

I have somehow got friends hooked on it also and have converted some from the first cooler to the latter.  My different groups of friends cannot stop raving about Happy Lemon in the past couple of months and TODAY I’m quite excited to share with them, a new DRINK discovery.

After having lunch with Richard, Irene, Lauren, Fran and Paul at Cab Café 2 days ago, Richard suggested to stop by his latest addiction, Chatime.  Chatime is a Taiwanese (the population who started the milk tea craze) brand of milk tea and is considered one of the largest bubble tea brands in the world.

What I love about ChaTime is their second floor that’s a huge lounge area with chic seat designs.  It begs to spend more time there chatting with good friends and finishing your round of drinks.  Or maybe 2 rounds *shrugs*

They had so many varieties of drinks available to order that it might take you a while to choose your poison.  Take note that some of the Chatime drinks do not come with toppings/pearls/sinkers so make sure that you check with their friendly staff.  Pearls are an addition of PHP 15/serving.

While there was an order for 2 Cocoa Smoothies, Tea Guanyin Tea Latte, Grass Jelly Milk Tea and Cha Time Roasted Milk Tea, I settled on Taro Milk Tea (PHP 90) and got a Pearl Milk Tea (PHP 80) as an added free bonus due to the current promotion they have on the store.

Chatime OVERLOAD! I likey-like! 🙂

It’s Buy 1 Take 1, choose any of the drinks on the menu board and take 1 Pearl Milk Tea (regular size) for FREE only from 12nn-2pm!  This will last until tomorrow, April 15, so better head over to Chatime at Pioneer St. by today or Friday to get free dibs on their Pearl Milk Tea.

Taro Milk Tea

Chatime Taro Milk Tea is the most real taro drink you can find in the market.  Don’t expect our local purple yam as its taro taste or the synthetic kind.  It took me a few more sips, midway, to finally appreciate Chatime’s version of fresh taro and I grew to like it.  It had pieces of the taro and i enjoyed the texture of the drink… not-thick or not-thin.  It had a certain dance in your mouth.  I might order the same next time I’m there but I’m also tempted to get a second drink to try their other offerings.

Try some Chatime drinks!

Chatime supposedly has 500 stores worldwide and it is now available in Manila with its first branch in Pioneer Street.  Why don’t CHA give it a try? 😉

Yummy Magazine Media Get-together at Mr. Jones

Thursday saw me and a few other food aficionados at the Yummy Magazine Get-together Event at Mr. Jones.  Mr. Jones is creating quite the buzz in the restaurant scene since this recently opened contemporary diner brings the diner experience to a whole new eating level.

An open-air front creates a bright and airy feeling when you decide to dine in one of the tables or booth areas outside.  Space is warm and comfortable.  There are also booth areas available in the dining area inside this Greenbelt 5 restaurant.  Customers can sit down and enjoy a skillfully prepared meal from a menu designed for serving at any time of the day.

Definitely, there’s culinary prowess to back up the urbane diner concept.  Mr. Jones is another collaboration of the same group that brought us Chelsea, M Café, and MoMo –managed by Raintree Restaurants’ Martin and Andrej Wisniewski with chef Kalel Chan.  That day, we were served with their house specialties found in the menu as well as new dishes prepared exclusively for this particular Yummy event.

On the Table

The Threesome PHP 395

Sweet and Creamy Pineapple Apricot and Canadian-style Double Smoked Bacon Macaroni, Old Bay and Fresh Dill Prawn “Louie” with Caper Berries and Truffled Egg Salad with Black Caviar… Definitely a Mr. Jones’ house specialty!  Three’s a good company especially with these wonderful starters!

“Yummy” Buffalo Drum Pops

Tagged under specially-made-for-Yummy, chicken drum pops marinated “Buffalo wings” fashion served with French fries and bleu cheese on the side.

Melted “Old Bay” Crab and Dory Thermidor PHP 375

Hollandaise and Mornay sauce, Wilted Spinach, Herb Rice Pilaf and Fresh Lemon

Wicked Truffled Mac and Cheese PHP 375

Mac and Cheese is definitely an American diner’s favorite but Mr. Jones version is sinfully delicious being baked with 3 types of macaroni, 4 cheeses, Canadian-style double smoked bacon, baby Portobello mushrooms, green peas and drizzled with Truffle oil.  Now who wouldn’t love that gourmet addition of truffle and Portobello mushrooms?

U.S. Beef Ribcap “Tapa & Garlic Overload” PHP 295

Topped with a heap of crispy garlic chips, garlic fried rice, Mr. Jones’ special MoMo, atchara and 2 eggs (choose your style of cooking)

Mini Black Forest Mud Pie

The “Yummy” Funky Monkey

Every single detail conspires to create the “sophisticated but youthful” taste both in atmosphere and in the dishes Mr. Jones’ kitchen ingeniously whip up.

Yummy Magazine’s MAY Issue

This month’s issue gets us quite excited when Yummy provides us with super saver recipes that we can crack for weekday cooking.  Dining out comes as second option since eating good food can get very expensive, especially when there’s that 12% VAT always imposed.  Good food doesn’t always have to come at a price since Yummy Magazine’s May issue features low-spend, high flavor recipes all under PHP 125 and 50 restaurants that please both tummy and wallet.

This has got to be the ultimate in anything that’s about “Cheap Eats.”  Find the best spots to eat without breaking the bank.  Yummy food editor Rachelle Santos also teaches you how to keep your food budget down by cooking smart and choosing the right ingredients.

Be sure to grab a copy before it runs out!

Yummy Popcorn by Chef Tony

You think you’ve tasted it all?  I’m sure you haven’t tasted this yet!  And it’s really something to be excited about!  Yummy Magazine in collaboration with Chef Tony presents the Southern French Herb with Cream Cheese flavor!  It’s a mouthful because it’s done in good taste!

The Yummy Popcorn by Chef Tony in Southern French Herb with Cream Cheese will be available in select Chef Tony stores starting June for only PHP 200 a bucket!!!  I’ve got my fill but I want more!!!  Can June come any sooner? 😉

Thanks to Ro Manalo and Fran Haw of Summit Media for the invite! 🙂

Krispy Kreme Egg-citing Doughnuts

One thing parents and children alike get excited about during Easter Day is the Easter bunny egg hunt.  A lot of hotels have small egg-hunt events for their patrons.

Ancient cultures like the Egyptians, Persians and Hindus have believed that the world began with an enormous egg, and various cultures have since adopted it as a symbol for rebirth or renewal.

Since then, the most popular tradition associated with the egg is Easter, when the vibrant colors of spring inspire the decorative motifs. that give the eggs their characteristic look. Apart from being a symbol of new life, Easter eggs are still given away as a token of friendship, love or good wishes –enduring beliefs that outlast the fast pace of life.

And with Easter just around the corner, expect Krispy Kreme to fill everyone’s baskets with Easter joy. To celebrate this age-old tradition, the famed doughnut shop has transformed their wide selection of treats into egg-shaped delights, featuring Hershey’s Dark Chocolate, Hershey’s Cookies & Cream, Peanut Butter & Kreme, Snickers Classic, Chocolate Custard Filled, Chocolate Kreme Filled, Sugar, Cinnammon Apple, Caramel Kreme Crunch, Chocolate Iced With Sprinkles and new varieties like Lemon Iced,  Blueberry Iced & Strawberry Iced. Available starting March 29, be sure to get these limited-edition doughnuts while supplies last.

Krispy Kreme has been making Filipinos happy since 2006, when they opened the first branch in Bonifacio High Street. Since then, it has spread to branches in Greenhills Shopping Center (drive-thru), SM Mall of Asia (drivethru), Trinoma Cinema Level, SM Megamall, SM Mall of Asia, Ayala Avenue, Robinsons Galleria, Gateway Mall, Glorietta 4, SM City Annex (North EDSA), Annex 2 SM Fairvew, Eastwood, Marquee Mall, SM San Lazaro and SM Manila. Capping Valentines Weekend with a Win

Last December, Between Bites, together with Minute Maid, hosted a contest on the site: Opening a Minute Maid: Experience the Natural Goodness.  There were two parts to that contest.  One would win the Blog section, while the other would win the Comment section.

Last February, right before Valentines weekend, Minute Maid has announced the Blog winner.  It was the entry of Kate who won.

http://meowbykate.blogspot.com/2010/01/time-for-orange-break.html

I requested Kate to share with us a few photos of her “prize” experience.

“I am actually quite embarrassed because there are no pictures of me.  I took pics of the room, the food we ate and the complimentary wine service.  I also took a thank you shot for Minute Maid.  Btw, we didn’t get to avail of the massage yet because it was scheduled the next day, meaning we would have checked out na.  We decided that we’d just save it for our 7th Anniversary this April 🙂

Anyway, thank you so much for hosting this contest 🙂  It was a really tiring week for us, since we came all the way from Clark and then drove to Makati to get the voucher.  The hotel stay plus wonderful breakfast buffet was a perfect way to end our Valentine’s weekend.”   ~Kate

Sharing Kate’s photos from her EDSA Shangri-la stay.  No photos though of Kate herself but she did take a “thank you” shot for Minute Maid.

Thank You Minute Maid!

Thanks Kate for joining the contest! 🙂  I hope you enjoyed your EDSA Shangri-la Chi Spa Holiday Package. 😀

Congratulations…

Christian Homeschooler

A regular day for me starts with me fixing up breakfast for my boys and getting ready for homeschool. While I won’t have it any other way, it can still be tiring at times. Because the truth of the matter is, my day do not stop at homeschooling. I then have to prepare lunch and zero in on my online job thereafter. It can be crazy, I kid you not. Especially now that I have ventured into yet another online job, as a virtual assistant. This requires me to be glued to my office until the wee hours of the morning.

I’ll have to admit that it’s not always bright and shiny everyday. But I cannot be more thankful that I have discovered a partner that melts away my stress. Even during my “walang tulugan moments,” I’d find myself grabbing a bottle of Minute Maid Pulpy Orange. It somehow perks me up, switching me back to the timezone that I needed to be at a given moment. (Boss’ time zone is UTC-7 hours)

Minute Maid Pulpy Orange refreshes me at random parts of my ever packed days (and nights) — yes, even way after the hubby has gone to dreamland. =)

You just won The Spa package worth Php5,000.

Congratulations in winning the Comments category of the ‘Minute Maid Get Closer to Nature’ contest.

An acknowledgment email will be sent to you shortly on how to claim your prize.

Thank you to everyone who joined the Minute Maid contest.

Watch out for more exciting contests soon!!! 😉

For the meantime, the Ovi contest is ongoing.  Check that out!  🙂

You might be the lucky weekly winner!

*Kindly requesting both winners, if it ain’t such an inconvenience, to send me a photo of their “prize” experience so I can share it with the other readers.  Much appreciated!  Congrats!

Minute Maid Comment Winner Soon

I know, I know.  Waiting is an agony.  It’s been a while and the Blog winner has been announced weeks ago.  So what’s taking the delay?  Well, there are more Comment entries than the Blog entries for one –which the client has to evaluate thoroughly because there are just too many good entries that it’s really difficult to pick a winner.  I’m glad the decision is not in my shoulders since it’s really a tough call.

This is a short clip to update you that the client definitely hasn’t forgotten, but they are taking a bit more time in deciding.  Winners will be announced SOON.  Hold on to your seats!

Cheers! 🙂

And Good Luck Mates! 😉

Opening a Minute Maid: Experience the Natural Goodness

There are a multitude of things we enjoy about life.  The naked truth is… the biggest pleasure, most often that not, comes from the simplest things.  Simple.  Natural.  Fun.  Three words when mixed together in a moment can get me (or the Black Eyed Peas) singing, “I got a feeling… woo-hoo… that tonight’s gonna be a good night.”  In another breath, these words can easily improve your outlook and make you feel good.

For some people, fun means drinking beer and partying at events –but that doesn’t necessarily make you feel good all the time.  When I think about fun, I remember doing the thrilling Sky Jump at the Macau Tower.  That was some ultimate fun coupled with extreme adrenaline rush.  Trust me, nothing beats natural high.

And nothing beats natural pulp.

Thirsty?  Open a bottle of Minute Maid Pulpy Orange –it’s the simplest way to catch the natural goodness of my favorite fruit.  With Minute Maid Pulpy Orange, I enjoy the refreshing juice drink all year round.  Each plump pulp bits contain nature’s best and only Minute Maid Pulpy Orange can bring Nature’s goodness to me.

Preference always goes to the real pulp than a mock one like a real hug is always better than an icon hug in my mobile phone or instant messaging chats.

In fact, it’s the best.  If I can open a bottle of real hug when I need one, I definitely buy in boxes.  Nonetheless, I get much satisfaction in knowing that the next best thing to enjoying actual fruit juice, without having to pick and grind, is opening a bottle of real pulpy Minute Maid Pulpy Orange or Mango Orange.

How about you, when do you refresh with Minute Maid? 😉

Miss Universe 2009 Winner

Miss Venezuela won the 2009 Miss Universe crown giving a back-to-back title to their country.  It is also Venezuela’s sixth time bagging the coveted beauty crown since the pageant’s creation.  Very young at 18, Stefania Fernandez, dressed in a flowing tiered red evening gown, jumped in joy (rather not so gracefully) with fellow Miss Venezuela 2008 winner.  As the crown was passed from one Venezuelan beauty to the next, the two cheered and teetered in elation that made the crown briefly fell to the floor.

Personal bet Dominican Republic Ada Aimee de la Cruz was the first runner up.  Dominican Republic had the toughest question being asked whether or not HIV test should be mandatory.  Another personal bet in the top 15 didn’t make it to the next cut, Miss South Africa.  Our Filipina bet didn’t also make it to the Top 15 cut.

The other finalists were Miss Kosovo, Droga Ganusha; Miss Australia, Rachael Finch; and Miss Puerto Rico, Mayra Matos Perez.  Miss China, Wang Jingyao, was named Miss Congeniality and Miss Thailand, Chutima Durongdej, won Miss Photogenic.

The new Miss Universe is from the city of Merida in the west of a beauty-obsessed South American country where hard-fought pageants are something of a national sport, with contestants widely dissected by the public and the media.

If there was one gripe about the whole worldwide-televised event, it’s the production.  The prestigious pageant included musical performances by Flo Rida (whose music I listen to and like but it felt inappropriate to have him sing in the pageant with a background of “glamorous/model” women clad in bikinis jump in Hip Hop music), Heidi Montag, David Guetta and Kelly Rowland.

Kanin Club: Sign Me Up as a Member!

November 30, Sunday was the perfect day to take a trip to Tagaytay.  It was a Sunday following a Monday holiday so I was expecting traffic to be heavy on Monday instead since people would naturally sail through the extended weekend.

After ziplining in Tagaytay, pasalubong stop at Rowena’s and a sampling teaser at Sanctuario Tagaytay, we headed to Paseo de Santa Rosa in Laguna for our main dinner.  Only 30 minutes passed and the car convoy was already parking in front of the Adidas outlet store.  Kanin Club was the destination.

Arriving at half past 8pm, I was surprised to still see a queue by the door.  The place was packed and there was not an empty table in sight.  More than the reviews, this is a good sign that great dishes wait behind that door marked Kanin Club.  It wasn’t too long (barely 15 minutes in fact) and our group of 6 was seated comfortably in adjoined tables.

The restaurant is a brainchild of mountain bikers, Chef Anthony Mendoza and wife Emely, along with business partners Tony Cancio and Mariel Luna of Café Breton.  When I scouted Paseo de Santa Rosa as a location for an Internet Café franchise a few years back, Café Breton was always my favorite place to hang-out as I watched foot traffic change hour after hour.  Now, there’s more reason to stop over Paseo de Sta. Rosa from Tagaytay to Manila or vice-versa.

The first few pages of the menu help you decide what to get, mentioning their bestsellers.  There are so much appetizing dishes to try, you’d have a heartache snubbing those left unuttered to the wait staff.

On the Table:

Crispy Dinuguan P233

It is KC’s most copied signature dish, which is pork heavenly deep fried to a crisp then set in a semi-dry stew of pork blood.  Menu says it’s proven to have convinced non-dinuguan eaters to like the dish.  The group seemed to be excited to try this dish and was very much satisfied at the innovative take on the unthinkable pork blood stew.  They would have enjoyed this tremendously if the Crispy Pata wasn’t on the table.

Sinangag na Sinigang P200

Sinigang inspired fried rice complete with pork liempo and vegetable tempura –a rice version of dry Sinigang.  This is what piqued my interest the most.  I love Sinigang and sour dishes –and sinangag, in fact when we have leftover of Sinigang na Baboy, I usually have it with my sinangag or I usually save sinangag rice from breakfast and reserve it for a Sinigang na Baboy lunch.  KC’s idea of marrying the two is definitely my cup of tea –or tamarind broth!  The vegetable tempura at the peak of the rice surprisingly complements the entire rice.  It was a complete meal on its own.

Tinapa Rice P133

We were debating between Fully Loaded Rice (Jim’s choice) or Tinapa Rice.  It all boiled down to Marie’s decision so we got Tinapa rice.  Rice cooked with bits of garlic and smoked fish.  Butch said Andrew would like this rice because Andrew likes salty dishes.

Vegetarian Curry P140

All the vegetable you like in Pinakbet with flavorsome curry sauce.  Between chicken and vegetable, I opted to get the vegetarian kind because we’ve had so many meats throughout the day.  This curry dish made me remember a bit of Japanese curry I tried in Japan and the Filipino curry version I like.

Crispy Pata P393

Deep fried pork knuckles, skin is light and crunchy and the meat is so tender the menu proudly claims it melts in your mouth while it challenges you to resist the temptation.  I haven’t had Crispy Pata for so long that it was the only meat (and fat) I attacked that night.  I fought the urge to grab a knuckle and gnarl on it like a starving mutt.

Sigarilyas Express P133

Wing beans cooked the bicol express way, spicy!  It was okay, nothing overly special but trying something new always makes up for a refreshing break of the mundane.

Prices already includes the 12% VAT which is really good value for money.  Our meal came up close to only P1,600 including 3 drinks.  Reminiscing the wonderful Filipino food plates we tried just made my mouth water right now… I have an intense craving to go back –soonest (any volunteers?).  KC’s promise to give a grand time satisfying your “lutong bahay pinoy cravings” was very much kept.  Kanin Club –truly a Filipino kitchen whipping up Filipino specialty dishes with a brilliant twist.  You have to experience it.

Yay, I can scratch off another name on the Miele Guide list.

Kanin Club Kusina Filipino is located at Paseo de Sta. Rosa, Sta. Rosa Laguna and is open Monday-Sunday from 11am-2pm and 530pm-930pm.  For inquiries, you may contact them at 049-5440332.  The second branch is located at Westgate, Filinvest Corporate City, Alabang, Muntinlupa (771-1400).  Alabang Branch Restaurant hours: Monday to Thursday, 11:00AM – 2:30PM, 5:30PM – 10:00PM; Friday to Sunday, 11:00AM – 11:00PM; Merienda served from 2:30PM – 5:30PM, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays

Estee Lauder Magnascopic Mascara

I’m not a big make-up person. I still don’t know how to put eye make-up on my own or even blush properly.  My friends (hello Carlo!) used to laugh about my blush.  I’m jealous how other girls can play around with their eyes using different make-up strategies.  I was tempted to attend a make-up short seminar 2 years ago in one of the top make-up schools in Manila but I figured that 30-50 grand could go a long way somewhere else –besides, I do not have that amount in my make-up kit much more my wallet.  With this hurdle, I kept my cosmetic enhancement to the basic (powder, mascara, blush) even to big events like weddings.  Once in a while, I dabble into shimmers and what nots, but applying them is my drawback (Rihanna’s Disturbia in my singing version “dumb dumb di dumb dumb”)

I needed to buy a new mascara 3 months ago and my favorite Lancome Hypnose mascara (sold at PHP1,500 as far as I can remember) was out of stock in black.  It was available in brown but I don’t know if I want to go brown again.  Lancome Hypnose gives volume to your eyelashes to create that “hypnotic” look.  I thought of changing to Lancome L’Extreme and try extending my lashes with the product.  Unfortunately, they were also out of stock in washable mascara at Rustan’s Shangri-la and Rustan’s Makati.  They have Lancome L’Extreme but it’s in the water-resistant formula.  I’ve tried waterproof mascara (L’Oreal dual mascara) and I really harmed my shrill lashes back then.

Lancome is one of the brands I’m really loyal to.  It started with the release of their Juicy Tubes 4-5 years ago (?), which I’m really fanatic about.

Since the Estee Lauder brand has been my favorite as of late in foundation and compacts, it was an opportune time for me to give their mascaras a shot.  They had a special offer on their Magnascopic.  For PHP 1,500, you get the mascara at its price with 2 add-ons.  They threw in an eye gel cream and a mascara remover in the pack.  It looked like a good buy then.  Although I have to say I really miss the Lancome brand.

Uno Pizzeria -MOA

Alvin Tan sent an invite through my gmail account for a dinner at Uno Pizzeria.  The restaurant is located in Mall of Asia and the invite was on the same Friday of the Clear Black Night party at Taste Asia.  It was killing two birds with one stone and frying it too.

There was barely any table left open that Friday evening upon walking into the restaurant.  It was fully packed even before my lucky angel dust reached the place!  Diners have made Uno Pizzeria a happening dining destination in Mall of Asia especially on Friday nights when there is a live band playing.  The menu is an eclectic of sorts featuring pasta, fish and chicken dishes.

On the Table:

Buffalo Wings

Tender crisp wings coated with Uno Pizzeria’s fiery buffalo sauce.  Addicting glaze coated the crusty chicken wings but too hot to handle.  If you love spicy nibbles as much as I do, then this is the perfect match to your beer!

Chicken Wrap

This is the dish to order when one is on a healthy binge.  Chicken slices, tomatoes and lettuce on pita wrap.  The tameness of the wrap allowed our palates some break from the heat of the wings.

Four Seasons Pizza

This is their bestseller pizza that offers 4 different flavors:

Tandoori Chicken and Mango –grilled chicken tandoori with ripe manoges, onions, and peppers

West Side Shrimp Pesto –shrimps sautéed with garlic sauce fused with their very own pesto

Ruby Ribs –strips of tender ribs, with onions and fresh parsley on their tangy barbeque sauce

White Cheese –their version of the white cheese pizza

I went to Uno Pizzeria half full that I didn’t get to even try the pizza but Bubba seemed to have enjoyed all the food: Buffalo wings, shrimp pesto pizza and the white cheese.  The place being always full indicate how people have marked a favorite hang-out along San Miguel Bay.
