Carlo’s Pizza

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

June 25, 2008.  If you can’t go to Tagaytay (http://www.janedchua.com/2008/05/30/carlos-pizza-tagaytay/) and want to eat at Carlo’s Pizza, you can always go the branch in Metrowalk.  No fresh air and scenery though –just a view of Burger on the Run stall.

That is where we went when Bubba had a craving for Carlo’s Pizza.  Yes it is him whose hankering I had to appease this time around.  Wait, I actually agreed to appease him when by the mention of Carlo’s Pizza, my craving started for their Chicken Fingers.  So immediately, he appeased me in return.  Whose turn is it next to appease the other?  Moving on….

Abbondanza Abound

Friday, July 4th, 2008

It was a long long looong day Tuesday starting with a lunch meeting at Kaya, a Nat Geo presentation and Fox Crime meeting afterwards.  By 7pm, I still haven’t had the time to check all of my emails at work but I had to be off to Abbondanza for a much-anticipated dinner with fellow foodies and bloggers.

dsc06023.JPG

It was a woman pow-wow as Bubba was the thorn among the roses.  We first arrived at the venue followed by Didi.  Didi, Bubba and I hit it off with a URCC conversation and how much we are all excited to catch URCC XII Supremacy.  It was fun to see another female as hyped up as I am about watching these Mixed Martial Arts athletes toughen it out on the mats.  Soon after, Fran and Sabs almost arrived at the same time.

dsc06008.JPG

My mind was really flying most of the time but good food saved most of my conversational skills.  Chomping is my perennial escape for not having to open my mouth to talk.  Even if I had left the office at 7, my mind was still at the office sitting on my desk thinking.  I’m glad this night Bubba took over the chat aspect of dinner for both of us and I was happy to take the role of an audience.

dsc06011.JPG

Abbondanza can easily be compared to Amici as the owner’s cooking roots can be traced back to the latter.  I like the atmosphere in Abbondanza better because it has a more cozy and warm vibe.  The staff has a cheerful aura too, readily assisted us when we needed someone to take a group photo.  I find the prices here more affordable too.

On the Table:

Napoli Pizza PHP 285

Didi chose the flavor for pizza.  Napoli is also one of the flavors on my list whenever at a Pizzeria.  Tomato based pizza with oregano, capers and anchovies.  Like Didi, I’m a fan of capers.  I also liked the thinness of the pizza and how it remained crispy throughout the dinner.  I drizzled spiced olive oil over the pizza to complete the taste.  I had to fight the urge to get a third slice.

dsc06033.JPG

Pasta ala Pescatora PHP 195

This happened to be Sab’s choice, which is pasta spaghetti generously charged with shelled shrimp, mussels and clams in white cream sauce.  Aside from the pizza, this was the next popular dish on the table.

dsc06036.JPG

 Cannelloni Agli Spinaci

I didn’t get to touch this at all.  When it was cut open, the spinach inside looked a bit dry.  Check Fran’s site (http://frannywanny.blogspot.com/) for her take on the Cannelloni.

dsc06028.JPG

Risotto al Funghi Porcini

It is basically a mushroom risotto.  The risotto was a bit overcooked as the rice grain looked bigger than usual and it dried out fast.  Taste wise, it was flavorful and mushroom is really highlighted in this dish.

dsc06042.JPG

Tri Color Pasta Cream Al Tonno

Read BIAS.  Since all the girls were busy with the Abbondanza dishes, Bubba and I enjoyed the familiar taste of my pasta dish.  Abbondanza was sweet enough to heat the food I brought for the group.

janes_pasta.jpg

Dinner was finished around 10pm.  Fran, Sabs and Didi had a night capper at Starbucks.  Too bad we weren’t able to join anymore since I had to run off to Chelsea at the Fort for another meeting.

I learned from Sophia Lee of Abbondanza that she is also a foodie and that their entire family lives for food, which prompted them to put up their very own restaurant.  Their love for food is now known as Abbondanza, which is turning one this coming Monday, July 7, 2008.  Blog about your Abbondanza experience and get a free dessert!

Abbondanza Ristorante is located at G/F Crescent Condominium, Amethyst Drive, Ortigas.  Reservation is not a must but you can call 6336336 for inquiries.

Pizzeria Toscana

Monday, May 26th, 2008

Bubba tricked me to thinking that we were going boxing at Elorde Gilmore Branch, but he actually made a dinner reservation at Pizzeria Toscana that Thursday night.  It’s a small quaint restaurant in San Juan that boasts of homemade Tuscan cuisine.  Prices are inclusive of 12% VAT, no service charge which is a great thing.  Pizzeria Toscana is family owned and has a relaxed and comfortable ambiance similar to hole-in-the-wall Italian cafés.  It only has 6 small tables with 30 maximum seating capacity.  The white walls are surrounded with framed photos of celebrities in black and white and old Hollywood.  There is a small TV set propped high in one corner, which is playing a DVD of An Affair to Remember.

toscan5

On the Table:

toscan1

Alla Angelica PHP170

The usual pasta angelica with tomatoes, garlic and basil, which was served with spaghetti noodles instead of angel hair

toscan2

Quattro Formagi PHP295 (Half)

Medium sized pesto based pizza.  Bubba really liked the thin crust better than Bellini’s or Segafredo but I have to disagree.  I like traditional tomato based pizza than the pesto based.

toscan3

Salmone PHP295 (Half)

I love the chunks of fresh salmone in the pizza.

toscan4

Bacalla PHP250

Salted cod in tomato stew.  Served with marble potatoes

Blueberry Cheesecake PHP100

The blueberry cheesecake had a generous blueberry topping, which always initiates a good impression.  The cheesecake will satisfy any craving for sweet and cheese delight.

Toscan6

Gelato Balsamico PHP70

The highlight of the dessert menu has to be the Gelato Balsamico.  It is Gelato in Vanilla flavor drizzled with Balsamic vinegar.  It had a fruity flavor, sweet and tangy.  It’s refereshingly weird at first but the taste grows on you.  It was served in a cute and fun uneven glass that kept moving around.

toscan8

Other interesting dishes in their menu:

toscan9

Pizza Regolare translates to your regular pizza.  Please allow 20-30 minutes serving time because crust is made from freshly baked dough.  They have the usual flavors of Pepperoni, Basic Cheese.

toscan10

Pizza Esagerato from the word exaggerated.  This translates to a double layer of ingredients on your pizza!!! Twice the amount of meat, cheese and all the works!

toscan7

Doppio Pizza means double-crusted pizza in which they have two flavors: Doppio Classico – roast beef, mushroom and double mozzarella cheese and Doppo Diavolo in sealed double crusted pizza –filled with hot rag-out bacon and mozzarella PHP 475.

Bubba’s Taters Treat

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

It was a regular after-work-hit-the-gym day.  It was going to be just me sweating it out in boxing or running at Red Corner.  Bubba was coming from a 7pm meeting at work so it was just the perfect timing to set out my plan.  Right after workout, I hurriedly ran from Crown Plaza to Tater’s at Robinson’s Galleria to order all the Tater’s grub that we can carry.

taters1

Like a Taters maniac, I chanted 2 big orders of their fried potato chips in nacho cheese flavor, one order of their munchers (which are nuggets of potato and other fillings) with sour cream, steak burger with cheese, and nachos with everything on it.

taters2

I also made a mad dash to Magoo’s to order pizza since it’s been a year since we last had Magoo’s pizza on biscuit dough.  I ran out of time in preparing everything before Bubba arrived.  I had to go back to the gym to prepare my gym bag and meet him there.  I asked the Taters guy if I can just get the food I ordered later and instructed him to place the placard among the yummy eats I bought.  He willingly obliged.

taters3

I sprinted back to Crowne Plaza (I had a better workout doing the errands going back and forth.  I shouldn’t have showered after gym after all) and met Bubba, huffing and puffing, like I just stepped out of the lockers.  All the sweat played into the role that I was at the gym this whole time.

taters4

We were right in time for the 10pm screening of 88 Minutes that stars Al Pacino.  He went to buy the tickets and I excused myself to sprint back to Magoo’s, which is all the way to the other wing of the mall.

taters4

Finally, all the food was laid on the table all for Bubba to see and enjoy during the movie.

Huff-puff.

Chelsea: As Good as NY

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

This restaurant has definitely become a landmark in Serendra.  Quite takes the spotlight in the strip of dining places with its deli type restaurant, Chelsea invites you for a comfortable sit down with its plush sofa which plays as the waiting area.  Wait staff are quick on their feet and pleasantly obliging (Not to mention, they kind of look alike).  They anticipate the patrons’ needs and are as accommodating as possible.

chelsea1

Chelsea has a myriad of ingredients/produce they are selling in the restaurant.  They sell different types of salt (I didn’t know there were so many kinds!) among dried oregano and other spices.  You can also buy bottled fish products.  I guess this feature of the resto makes up for the name, as the element of market is present resembling the Chelsea market in New Yawk.

chelsea2

I’ve always wanted to try Chelsea but it’s always full during dinnertime that we end up going somewhere else.  I’ve eaten in Duo, Polu Kai, Zao, Conti’s, Xocolat, Abe, etc but Chelsea was really top priority for me to dine in.  That and Mamou.  Good thing that we started out early this Saturday evening and were ready to eat dinner at 630pm.

chelsea3

We decided to eat outside so we can also go people watching while eating.  We were able to secure the couch area near the entrance door.  I looked at the menu and find that the menu wasn’t complicated.  There were so many that I wanted to order, all a bit familiar but not so.  Owner Martin Wisniewski knows his food as I can imagine that everything was made in house, including the desserts.  Each dish is prepared to order using the finest ingredients.

chelsea4

We were served with an amuse bouche of buttered focaccia bread and a clove of buttery soft garlic.  Bubba was eyeing me nervously as I place one whole pod of garlic on my bread where he had to half his.  He couldn’t help but ask, “are you really gonna use that much garlic on your bread?”  I gave him a confident grin and nodded yes.  I’d go for taste anytime over comfort.  On second thought, he has the right to be concerned because it is the companion who’d get the brunt of garlicky breath.  Quite surprisingly (and his lucky star was in the sky that night), this specific garlic didn’t leave an aftertaste nor did it leave a garlic odor in the mouth.

chelsea5

I wish the garlic had a stronger taste though, but I guess it being stronger applies to all including stench.

 On the Table:

Cream Squash with Goat Cheese PHP 150

The waiter asked if we wanted to split it into two.  I hesitated.  Not because it was sweeter to eat from one bowl but in Katre, they charge extra if you split the dish into two.  I asked the waiter if there was an extra charge, and he said there was none.  Good, so we had it in two separate white soup bowls.  You’d think it would be a smaller serving but each bowl was good enough for one hungry person.

chelsea9

We just had squash soup the night before at Mogwai, which was really good, but for the money and taste, Chelsea became my favorite place for Squash soup.  The soup had the right thickness without making it taste like a puree or a mushy chunk.  The volume had the right consistency and the generous bits of goat cheese blended well with the sweet taste of pumpkin.  It was served with a dollop of cream, which I can only wish was crème fresh.  A soup cannot be anymore perfect than this.  I wish I didn’t ask it to be split into two so I could have cheated 2-3 more spoonfuls.

chelsea10

Grilled Whole Rosemary Lemon Chicken PHP 495

Let me note that most of the dishes are served in a big cutting board, which is a distinctive idea.  I have tried this at my condo early 2007, because it looked so presentable (and because I lacked serving dishes at my small unit).  A whole medium sized roasted chicken was resting on top of the board with glistening vegetables –a mixed of green and red bell peppers, olives, onions and carrots.

chelsea11

I’ve never had a soft moist fall off the bone chicken meat.  Bubba pointed out that different parts of chicken were infused with certain flavors.  One part, you can taste the rosemary lemon, other part you can taste the carrots on the meat of the chicken.  It was a delicious surprise to get all different flavors from one chicken.  The meat was so tender and cooked just right.  Four can easily share the chicken, which makes it so worth the buck.

chelsea11

5 Cheese Pizza Thin Crust PHP 395

Bubba kept insisting that I ask what five cheeses are included in the pizza.  I was so hungry that I didn’t bother to ask.  I remember at this point, I stopped jotting down on my little notebook and gave my full concentration to chomping.  Mushroom in the pizza tasted like it was soaked in wine because it was flavorful.  Arugula leaves and apple slices garnished the crunchy pizza.  The Arugula made such a difference in the pizza.  It balances the saltiness of the cheese and clears the palate for another bite.

chelsea12

Chic dining and great gourmet food rolled into my budding favorite place in Serendra, Chelsea Market and Café.  Contact 9097011 for reservations.  My only complaint with Chelsea is the small white plate which doesn’t give much room to maneuver.  Although we weren’t able to get desserts since we were trying to catch a movie in Greenbelt, their dessert selection was promising.  Their best seller is Toblerone Torte (which is my favorite in Mom and Tina’s).  I want to give it a try on my next visit, and that’s going to be this Friday when I treat my mom to dinner.  I simply cannot wait.

Green Tomato

grn3

Sunday night in October 2007, before watching the movie Rendition, we had dinner at Green Tomato.  CW used to eat here a lot when he was still with San Miguel, which is just a stone throw away from Shangri-la Plaza.  It was my third time to eat here during the visit with my mom.  The second time was after the Premiere of the third installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean.  CW likes the food here but I find it ordinary.

grn1

You can split the pizza into two flavors.  We ordered 4-Cheese Pizza and all meat.  Their 4-cheese pizza includes a pesto sauce instead of a tomato base.  We also ordered a pasta dish that I forget.
