Horror Movie Contest

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

In July, Evan (Yoo Ho Suk) of Click B and VJ Isak visited the Philippines from Korea.  These are two pop icons that are well-liked by both Koreans and Filipinos alike.  I was really surprised to see the Manila Film Center filled with 70% more Filipinos than Koreans for the Pops in Seoul party.

A signed Pain Reliever Album of Evan (with a signed poster) is up for grabs.  Leave a comment or send an email to betweenbites@gmail.com answering the question:

Since it’s Halloween, what’s your favorite horror movie of all time and why?

It’s that simple!  Answer the question and stand a chance to win a much coveted signed CD of Evan.  All entries will be part of a raffle where one winner will be drawn.

July 5

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

After coming off a packed and exhausting weekend last week, July 5 was another non-breather schedule on a Saturday.  I woke up at 730 in the morning to start cooking lunch for my high school friends who was supposed to arrive at 12nn.  Tri-color Pasta Al Tonno, Beef Crispy, Cajun Chicken, Curry Rice, Pizza Chips were on the menu.  I don’t know why but tri-color pasta is my favorite pasta to cook these days.  Since there was no ground beef to be found in the ref, I was not able to cook Beef Crispy.

Ann informed us Friday that she couldn’t go because is work.  Mark called me Saturday morning to check if they were still going to pick up Achish as I requested.  They picked her up with her yaya because Ezra had work that day.

I finished everything by 1210pm.  CW arrived at 1145am and lent a hand.  Everyone arrived around 1230pm and we all started eating.  I totally forgot that Mark liked red sauce better.  I thought it was the other way around.  He wasn’t much of a fan of spicy stuff either and most of what I prepared were spicy.  (See Mark?  That’s what you get for being an absentee last time)

By 2pm, I had to excuse myself to get dressed for the K-Pop event I had to attend at 330pm.  I had to do the welcome remarks at this event that the Arirang channel hosted.  I left the house at 245pm and was at the parking lot of the Manila Film Center by 320pm.  I thought I was 20minutes early but the organizers called me with a frantic voice saying that I was supposed to do my speech that second.  I sprinted my 3-inch stilettos to the mountain like entrance of the venue.  When I got to the theater’s entrance, I was astounded by the pandemonium.  The theater was fully packed!  The Arirang channel brought Evan and VJ Isak to the Philippines and almost a thousand people flocked to MFC to see the show!  Leo met me at the theater entrance and assisted me down the steps (dragged me was more like it).  I couldn’t see the steps because the ground was pitch black.  The only light I can see was from the stage.  Good thing Bubba was behind me and flashed the path I was walking on with his Nokia N82 phone.

Running from the uphill then getting dragged down the steps and climbing to the stage, it was a wonder I was able to get through my short speech without passing out.  The crowd was anxiously waiting for my speech to be over so they can finally see what they really went there for.  I was so amazed by the response of the audience when they saw Evan and VJ Isak.  I could feel the theater shake.

After an hour, we trod off to Makati for URCC XII fighter’s briefing, which CW had to attend.  He was going to referee the fights alongside Joey Lepiten and Anthony Peñalosa.  4pm, he dropped me off Starbucks 6750 so I can attend the 3rd installment of Dialogue at Starbucks.  I’m so glad I was able to squeeze it in my tight schedule because I learned a few things from listening to Ivan and Director Kidlat.

I left in the middle of JP Tanchaco’s presentation (which I sat in for the 2nd time) since I had to meet Racq for my Estee Lauder powder.  I went to H-Salon to get my usual eyebrow threading from Thea and Racq followed afterwards.  She handed me my order of Estee Lauder powder and then she gave me a freebie of Hydra eye gel (thanks Racq, mwah)!!!

At 745pm, Mon driving a red hot Yaris picked me up and we headed to A-Venue where URCC XII was happening.  Jem and Fidel reserved seats for us.  845pm, the show was about to start (a separate post on the fights) and I had to gulp down a bowl of Yoshinoya quickly.  Urbandub was the band of the night.

I sat with Didi during the opening but had to return to my seat to accompany Mon.  The first 3 fights stimulated the crowd and made them forget an expected boring under card matches.  Too bad Mon left around 10pm to pick up Chay at the airport.  I sent him an SMS with the results afterwards.  CW and I had dinner at Fluke right before midnight and followed to Burger Avenue where our friends were.  Watching URCC XII Supremacy best capped off my activity-filled Saturday.

Nokia Soul of the Night Party

The Nokia N-series Wireless Adventure 2: Discover the Soul of the Night is the second installment to last year’s Soul of Manila adventure race.  Last year was a 2-day battle to discover different places that make up the Soul of Manila using the then newly launched N95.  This year, 10 teams were thrust into the night armed with the newest Nokia N82 to help reveal Manila’s night soul –discovering the heartbeat of Manila in the dark.

sotnp3

What a fiery night it was as the features of Nokia N82 glowed like fire as it withstood many challenges –mostly of taking photos in the dark.  Introducing the first Nokia phone with Xenon flash, the flash sparkled like the brightest star in the sky, taking all the attention as the teams flickered away, capturing different night lifestyles.

As the chase brimmed down to a finish at the Soul of the Night culminating party, held at Embassy Superclub, Fort, the ten participating teams traipsed to the event parading their stylish night wear with the most fashionable accessory to have –the N82.  The air was thick as anticipation grew in the crowd.

Dynamic hosting duo, Rovilson Fernandez and Marc Nelson, welcomed the partygoers with an AVP of what transpired during the race.  Rovilson was right.  The scoring was awesome.  It really made my skin all prickly.  The 4-months of dog hard work from the organizers really paid off as that video concluded the success of the race.

Karylle, Michelle and Ramon were called to the stage to share their experience from the race.  Rovilson and Marc then started giving out awards.  Each team received an award for the distinct quality of the players –may seem quirky to others but it was a nice gesture from the organizers.  It was Nokia’s way of making everyone winners, which is always a good endeavor.  The awards came in a glass trophy and each person received a beautifully wrapped black and silver gift –which turned out to be a Digital Viewer (sweet).

They started with the Love Team award.  Andi and Sharlene were shrieking and pointing at us.  Everyone started looking.  I said no, no.  I whispered that there are two other couples in the group.  My thoughts were suddenly running faster than an ostrich can protect its egg.  “How come they were so dead ball on this?  Me, a cheese ball?  Ugh, I hope they don’t show the photo with the kiss in Xocolat.  Not in front of my mom!”

sotnp7

Then they started reading the note on the award –excellent balancing skills and consistent sweetness… okay, the second one, I should be up in arms (I vehemently disagree that we displayed sweetness!  I was all business!), but the first clue was a dead giveaway because we kept doing these weird poses for the photos.

PHP 10,000 were given to the Best Storytelling team, to Nikki and Justin’s merit.  Now, for the top prize of PHP 100,000 and the trip to Macau… Drum roll please.  And the champ of the night is the team of…

Alfred Vargas and Michelle Lampino of Gadget Magazine!  Kudos Alfred and Michelle!  Book your Macau trip May 1-4 because Chris and I have plans to go anyway, we can all go together!

More champagne and flashbulbs, the party moved forward when the DJ took the floor and the dancers started busting their hips on the ledge.

On a personal note, I was really delighted to have my mom and sister there, who waited patiently for the event to start (my sister wasn’t even feeling well).  Thank you to my friends who flocked to the Fort and shared this night with us.  Chai, Lorenz, Mon, Chay, Yssah, RJ, Maggie, Reggie, Camille, Madz, Deneb, Francis, Zarah, and Karen.  King and Omar couldn’t attend because they were in Batangas, but I’m all so bouncy about the good news King!
