Ateneo Blue Eagles: Champions of UAAP ‘71

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Congrats to Ateneo Blue Eagles for winning the UAAP Season ‘71 basketball championship!!!

Hats off to you guys for your team play, defense game, passion and poise.  15-1 is a great record and what a sweet victory to win against your archrivals.  Kudos to Coach Norman Black!  I’ve always liked your style of coaching since San Mig days.

Casio, good job!  There’s next year, eye on the target.  (Maierhofer… zipping my lips…  sigh, lay off a little on the arrogance pill –sorry I can’t help it.)  Keep up the Animo spirit Green Archers!

WordCamp Philippines and DLSU v Ateneo Rd 2

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

Spent my Saturday at the WordCamp Philippines event held at College of St. Benilde.  Good thing there was no hitches in getting my laptop in.  The lady guard gladly helped me fill out the form and voila!  I can enter the premises with the laptop.  It’s good that CSB is implementing this protocol because it prevents someone from claiming a laptop that is not rightfully his.

I bumped into Jonel, Jayvee and Phoebe separately at the auditorium.  I sat behind Nina and checked the Wi Fi connection.  Later on, I had to sit next to another Jane so I can plug my laptop for charging.

I attended three classes that morning.  After the welcoming remarks from the Management and Information System Dean Benhur Ong, the organizers, Mindanao Bloggers, I headed to room 410 for Blogging 102 at 930am.  Jayvee Fernandez facilitated Blogging 102, Basics and Beyond.

2nd class was quite interesting too.  The door sign read Wordpress Optimization.  The Wordpress Write Page I can use but I don’t know how to add widgets and all those other stuff that makes your utilization of your website better.  I figured this class would teach me how to use Wordpress functions thus better use of the site.  Optimize means that right?  I entered the door and picked a seat at the back.  I was feeling anxious whether or not I was in the right class.  Good thing it wasn’t starting anytime soon.  When I caught the eye of the facilitator, I walked towards him.  I was being a blonde dumbshell by asking which class I was in.  The facilitator said it was Wordpress Optimization class.  Not only did I look like a complete douche bag, but also I was really being the part by asking, “that teaches you how to go about Wordpress right?”  A quick east and west of the eye checked whether this was a practical joke and a camera was behind him.  He gave me a weird look that confirms my being a moron.  “Uhm… yes.”  I gave a meek smile and went back to my seat at the back of the classroom.

For the 1120am classes, I was torn between picking Video Blogging or Journalism in Blogging.  I chose the former since the Journalism class was almost full and I have totally no idea how to do a video blog.  I think I made a good choice because I learned a lot from her presentation and Kring was pretty entertaining –emphasis on pretty.  She gave a lot of tips of how to make your video blog kick a**.

By 1230pm, I was eating lunch alone in one of the classrooms.  After lunch, I had to head off to Araneta Coliseum to reserve seats in the Upper A section.  Sucks but you gotta do what you gotta do if you’re a UAAP fan.  1pm is usually safe, there are still some good seats to choose from.  I arrived in Araneta 150pm and almost all the seats were reserved!!!  Some people reserved one whole row all for themselves, which I find a little unfair because some people (raising my hand) actually go 2-3 hours early to reserve a seat only to find out that it’s already SRO (standing room only) because of all the reserved rows. 2-3 seats I can understand being saved, but more than that, hey come on… you gotta give way to those who are actually physically there.

UAAP: DLSU v. Ateneo Round 2 (Thanks Didi for making it possible. XoXo)

I watched round 1 between DLSU and Ateneo and was hoping that round 2 proved to be our game match against the other school this season.  Unfortunately, Jayvee Casio was not in his element that day.  Defense displayed was poor in the first half.  We were closing the gap in 3rd quarter only to have the momentum short-lived with a time-out and basket conversion by Ateneo.  Ateneo played a team game last Saturday and truly deserved the win.  I have to say though that the DLSU Pep Squad made quite a showing during halftime.  This has got to be the best form I’ve seen them -clean jumps and well coordinated techniques.

Next game, DLSU needs to beat FEU for the 3rd placement in the ranks.

July 6 Marked the 1st Round Game of DLSU v. Ateneo

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Since college, I’ve been a die-hard UAAP fan.  I was not one to miss a DLSU-Ateneo game.  It’s been 2 years since I last went to watch a UAAP game.  The first year was when Green Archers got suspended.  That year I only went to Araneta just to watch the Cheerleading Competition and DLSU wasn’t even part of it.  Last year, I wasn’t able to go.  CW’s interests didn’t really include basketball and he couldn’t care less about UAAP.  But I told him last year when DLSU won another championship against UE that I wouldn’t let the next UAAP Season pass.

Since I got access to the game schedule for the first round, I knew that July 6 marked the first match between the two formidable foes DLSU and Ateneo.  I’ve been so busy at work that I haven’t quite looked or asked where to get my tickets yet.

Didi was really heaven sent.  5 days before the game, she answered my prayer.  I had dinner with blogger friends at Abbondanza and Didi said she might be able to score me some tickets.

Thursday, I received an SMS from Didi saying that she got two upper A tickets for me!!!  Yipee!!!  I was so elated.  I think that made my week.  That evening, Paolo SMS-ed me that he was selling extra upper A tickets.

(…where Blue Meets Green)

As planned, we set out early on Sunday and arrived at Araneta around 1pm.  Good thing I decided to be early because the DLSU section was 80% full and most seats were already reserved.  Luckily, CW and I found really good middle seats.  I saw a lot of familiar faces, the usual friends I see during the games.  I miss Gang Green!!!

Surprise surprise, Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao made an appearance and watched the first half of the game.  Gilbert Arenas also stole some limelight.

It was a toe-to-toe game but mostly led by the Green Archers.  The Blue Eagles dominated the last 5 minutes of the game that merited them the win.

After the game, we met with CW’s DLSU blockmates and had dinner at Cibo.

Eric asked me what can I recommend for him to order since they order their usual and he wanted to try something new.  That question always puts me in the spot.  And I feel the pressure that whatever I recommend should be really good since I have a food blog.  I recommended the Pasta De La Terra, which is my favorite pasta dish in Cibo.  Even if I love food, what tastes good to me might be different to somebody else.  I just don’t want people to set their expectations high because when it’s at the top, there’s no other way to go but down.  I was really glad that he liked the dish I suggested.
