Good Vibes This Weekend

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Life is good.

I had a pretty rough Friday afternoon (more details soon) that really made me feel bad the whole Friday evening.  Someone was being harsh over something that is supposedly not a “BIG” deal to her.  In fact, another person (AP) initiated this BD (big deal) even if I raised a concern about it.  My bad was I still went with AP’s idea despite my uneasiness (having to always be the “taong bahay,” I thought this one time wouldn’t hurt).  To make matters worse, I found out that AP didn’t relay a message that was supposed to be relayed to her early this week that somehow confirms her theory that I don’t give “advise.”

Anyway, I’ll “advise” readers on that soon… maybe during the weekend.  I’m hesitant to expose my personal feelings on this (since negative vibes are not welcome on this site), but I owe it to my online journal (and my health) to have a release… and writing has always been my stress buster.

I digress.  As my offline plurk announced last weekend, God always finds a way to turn things around for me, without me having to ask.  First was the blast I had bonding with CW fam (particularly lil’ sister) during a late night dinner at Bellini’s,  I wish I get to spend more time with them.  2nd was my friend and ex-officemate Martin telling me that he’s bringing me to Armiin on November 21.  In the Sabi group, I’m the least who appreciates house music (heef haf all the way baby, hippity hippity hop! :) ) but being on this guest list means being able to spend time with my friends at the event they enjoy –and that makes me happy.  3rd, I also had a great Saturday with the berks, tagging my first LazerXtreme Laser Tag experience, a successful hole-in-the-wall recommendation at Soms, and winning poker night @ Eric’s house (or hotel whichever is more appropriate.  Goodness, I soooo love ERT’s house!  I dub that my dream house! –with only a few minor adjustments).

Sunday, I had another Laser Tag schedule (yes, two days in a row –only because I cannot turn down any of the two groups.  Plus it’s loads of fun!).  This time it was with the Sabi group and supposedly some from the Photoholic group (shout-out to Madz!).  Bubba’s sister, Jem, and Fidel joined too.  Fidel got his hands on 2 free Platinum passes for the Chris Brown Rihanna concert  that day so Jem bestowed us their Gold tickets –an instant upgrade from our Silver tickets.  Monday night, a small investment quadrupled!

God protects my choice to be happy.  Keep the faith!

Life is good.

Mamou

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Saturday dinner was spent at Mamou’s with my high school friends.  It’s been a long time since I’ve last seen my PIQC friends.  The last time we sat down for anything was a potluck dinner at my place last December where I cooked new dishes like Cajun Chicken, Pizza Roll and Beef Crispy.  Mark and Anne missed that dinner unfortunately.  When we all decided to get together, I initially planned to bring them to Sanctuario Tagaytay in Metrowalk or Chelsea at Serendra.  Since we all haven’t tried Mamou, I suggested having the dinner there.

Reservation at Mamou is done differently.  There are only two schedules for dinner reservation –630PM and 830PM, which means that if you made a reservation at 630, you have to finish by 820 to make way for the incoming guests.  A certain Annie sent me an SMS to confirm my reservation and the number of party attending.  She also sent me a second message sometime within the day regarding “Live Maine Lobsters” we can order in the evening.

CW and I arrived at 645PM.  At Mamou’s, you will enjoy a home ambience and a gracious welcome.  The staff are very respectful (especially one whose name appears to be Francis) but service of the rest of the crew is a bit inconsistent.  As I call on one wait staff, he hesitated significantly since he probably wasn’t designated to wait in our area.  Since Grace called and informed me that she will be late, CW and I placed our orders.  It said on the menu that it takes 20 minutes if you order the steak.

Sean and Angel arrived at 730pm.  Grace coming from work had to pick up Mark and Anne.  Since it was raining all day and traffic was bad, they arrived at 820PM.  My PIQC friends are almost always on time and are rarely late for our meet ups.  For something fortuitous like the typhoon and the heavy traffic it causes, the dinner schedule quite limits the dining time.  Good food is usually enjoyed slowly especially when dining with good friends.

On the Table:

Angus Prime Steak (14 ounces) PHP 1680

We already started eating before everybody arrived since I was really very hungry.  I was so excited to order this and have been craving for it since the last time I was at Serendra.  I’ve read so much about Mamou’s steaks.  I heard that even PGMA chooses to dine here with the 1st family.  A 400g steak priced at almost PHP 1700 is quite steep for a non-steakhouse joint but I shrugged and gave it a go.

dsc05512.JPG

I debated whether to get medium or medium well and settled on the latter.  It was served with your choice of 2 sidings.  I decided to get the red steak rice and corn pudding.  I was so excited to eat the red meat and had to resist the urge to grab it with my bare hands.  Patience is a virtue after all.  It was served on a white plate slanted by a small bowl underneath.  The inclined surface allows the excess oil to slide towards the low side.

dsc05495.JPG

The meat was already cut into slices.  My first bite had a little bit of fat in it.  No complaints there.  Fat after all makes up the flavor of the meat.  It had a good charred crust on the outside but it was a bit overdone in the inside.  The steak was well done and was lacking in taste.  I hesitated to ask for a steak sauce because I didn’t want to insult the chef, but since the meat tasted bland for my taste, I had to ask the waiter for one.  Unfortunately, they didn’t have any steak sauce and I was handed Lee and Perrin’s Worcestershire sauce instead.  I asked for freshly ground pepper to spice up the flavor.

CW on the other hand didn’t complain at all about the steak.  He enjoyed the side order of rice that came with it, while I instantaneously finished the corn pudding.  I really like corn and Mamou’s corn pudding had the right sweetness and creamy consistency.

Beer Batter Fish with Potato Wedges PHP 255

It was also served on a white plate, 3 pieces of fish fillets in a light beer batter with 3 unsalted potato wedges.  The fish wasn’t oily and the golden crust had the right crisp as you take a bite of it.  CW also liked this dish a lot.

dsc05506.JPG

Sean and Angel ordered two dishes as well.  One was the Roast Pork and Chicken with Beans and Rice PHP595 (To share serving) and the other was the Beer Batter Fish with Potato Wedges as I recommended.  Whereas the three ordered the Roast Pork and Chicken too and Batac Bolognese.  However, instead of the Bolognese, it was some Clam Pasta in Olive Oil that was served by mistake.

It was good to see my old friends.  Anne kept the atmosphere light and fun as CW anticipated.  I was so happy to be sharing stories with Grace and Mark again, while we were all delighted to finally meet Sean’s girlfriend of 3 years, Angel.  We met with Grace’s aunt, who we all call Auntie, at Cacao after dinner for some coffee.

dsc05519.JPG

Our total bill for 7 heads was close to PHP 5,000.  I resisted the desire to complain about the steak but Auntie said I should have.  It is my right to do so especially if I’m paying a hefty price for a single dish.

I haven’t been inspired lately to write about the restaurants I’ve visited the past two weeks.  I thought the visit to Mamou can spruce up the lull I’ve been experiencing in restaurants.  Too bad that I was really disappointed and I felt like having a second dinner that night.  Still, several good reviews of Mamou from other bloggers prompt me to give it another shot.

Cav Excites the Senses

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

(Photos courtesy of Bobby De Ocampo)

One of the perks to love about my job is the location of our meetings with the channel affiliates.  It is usually in restaurants (mostly in 5-star hotels) over lunch, dinner or teatime.  What better way to talk about business but over delectable food.

April 15, 2008, BBC invited JHC and me to a dinner at Cav.  This was going to be my second visit to the place.  Cav (Cave) is a French colloquial word for cellar and the café restaurant actually has one with an extensive array of wines.  As you enter their glass door, the first thing that catches the eye is the high-tech looking chiller that looks like a vending machine.  A revolution to the usual classy dressed-to-the-nines wine tasting events, Cav has portrayed wine drinking as less intimidating.  It has democratized wine tasting by foregoing the bottles (and the expense of buying it) and making sampling portions available instead.

cav2

For the more serious wine enthusiast, they have a cellar that should have a vault for a door since one vintage bottle from Napa Valley costs nearly a quarter of a million.  A wine collector must ink a sparkling 250,000 in Philippine Peso on a cheque for a vulnerable bottle!  I don’t think you’d see this bottle in the dispenser though, knowing that they throw out leftover wines after 21 days.  Many purists would crinkle their nose at this invention, but the machine is technologically advanced to keep the wines from oxidizing.

The unique wine serving system sans a 2-legged server provides different types of cards.  A tasting card is your golden ticket to drink the different wine offerings displayed on their “vino vendo”.  The temperature sensitive machine dispenses a tasting portion, a half glass or a full glass.  They also offer a Loyalty Card perfect for clubs or groups who frequent the resto.  In our case, we used a table card where it is provided for each table to be added to the total bill.

The allure that comes with drinking wine is in the ceremony that comes before it.  The tempering, opening and pouring –where the excitement builds up in the anticipation of the cork popping open.  Even as trivial as the delicate way one holds the wine bottle as if holding a woman.  The graceful way of tilting the neck to the glass…

The Noel Bernado styled interior has a European flair that gives a hip and stylish vibe.  The dining room is handsome and dimly lit.  The welcome is genuine, warm and cordial.  They have an ala-carte menu for wine pairings but a 3-course meal sets you back PHP 890 while a 4-course dinner is at PHP 1100 plus service charge and tax.  There is an additional PHP 550 if the entrée is paired with steak.  Since this was a dinner meeting/relationship building, I wasn’t able to muster the guts to take out my trusty camera to take photos of the food.  I was so tempted to order red meat but I resisted since I was supposed to be on a no-reds diet this week.

Three-Course Meal PHP 890

1st Course:                Hearts of Organic Baby Romaine with Jamon Crisps, Caper Berries and Truffle Aioli

The dish, placed on the table by a waitress with a stressed face, looked like a whitish fan with green outline and red dot designs.  I thoroughly relished this starter and wished that I didn’t get to the last bite.  Oh truffle!  The aroma is always inviting and the taste is so eternally seductive.  My hands quiver as I slice gently into the leaves of the baby romaine.  I softly nudged the bacon bits, capers with my fork closer to the greens and took a bite.  How orgasmic!

2nd Course:                Lemony Parmesan Tortellini with Parma Ham

As my taste buds were tickled during the initial foreplay, I was brimming with excitement as the pasta dish was placed in front of me.  The tortellini almost melts in your mouth and you are left with the taste that highlights the contrast of citrus and salt from the sharp Parmesan taste.  A thin shave of Parma ham that was sitting on top of was briefly slighted.  But soon after I gave into sin, it was straddling the side of my tongue.

3rd Course:                Baked Salmon in Coconut Champagne Froth with Minted Peas and Jasmin Rice

Since I was craving for a manly choice for my entrée but opted to go Catholic with a salmon dish, my heart was already in despair as I stare back at the fish meat in front of me. I was surprised though that it was sitting very wet on white liquid which I can only deduce as the champagne froth, which had a tad bitter taste to it.  I wanted the flesh dry but moist, not drenched like it was still swimming in water.  The 1st 2 courses opened my senses while the main course tamed down the erecting flames.  Just thinking about Cav’s concoctions again actually brought heat to this lackluster Wednesday.  I wasn’t disappointed with the entrée since it was still an intercourse of flavors –not the most arousal but one made of affection.

I had to take a moment with my wine and shake off the spell to be able to concentrate on the table conversation.  Dessert time.  Keith ordered a Valrhona Chocolate Soufflé Cake with Grand Marnier Strawberry Float as his dolci, while Christine got the Yoghurt Panna Cotta with Skewered Fruits, which we all shared.  The fruit part was slices of strawberry and melon skewered in lemongrass stalks.  Grilled fruits are always a favorite of mine as the grill marks adds an extra texture and releases the natural sugar in the fruits.

The Prie Fixe Menu is worth every buck.  I’m a happy camper because I didn’t have to shell out a dime.  All the ingredients are of the highest quality and Markus Gfeller skimps on nothing to achieve his goal that wows discerning palates.  Dinner at Cav is inventive and oh so irresistible –a festivity of well thought out food where a tremendous job of blending ingredients and flavors is eminent.
