I sent an incident report to the management of Tender Bob’s last Monday.  Immediately on the same day, I received an apology from the management initiated by Tender Bob’s general manager Bambi Meer.  He personally called to inform me that they would address my concern regarding their Greenhills branch.

Kudos to Tender Bob’s management for a personal and speedy turn around!

Cook it the Right Way @ Healthy Shabu-Shabu

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

What better way to miss the Chris Daughtry Live in Manila concert happening in Libis?  Attend the Healthy Shabu Shabu event and engage your appetite to healthy and delicious food!  That is precisely what I did this evening.  Looking for something to warm me up for tomorrow and a good bowl (or more) of hot soup absolutely did the trick.

step-by-step.JPG

dsc07160.JPG

When one hears Shabu Shabu, one thinks no frills cooking.  Dump everything in hot water without using an iota of brain cell.  One only needs a drop of brain juice to realize not to stick the searing beef from the hot pot straight to a salivating mouth… I ran out of brain juice.

hss-interiors.JPG

Now my tongue is numb from scorching it with hot spicy yummy broth.  But before it went numbed and stricken with oversized dots, it was a very happy digestive organ.

dsc07149.JPG

Candy Hwang, the woman behind Healthy Shabu Shabu, developed the art of eating Shabu Shabu.  The process begins with choosing the items on your Shabu Shabu platter –veggies, seafood, beef, and lamb as the main options.

dsc07139.JPG

Nutritious veggie platter is always a staple in most shabu shabu meal along with 2 different servings of fresh homemade noodles, the fat and thin of noodles, vermicelli and egg noodle.  This includes Taiwan and Baguio petchay, beancurd, yam, black mushrooms and carrots.  For meat options, chicken, thinly sliced lamb and Angus beef are available.  A healthier alternative is a seafood platter that includes shrimps, fish cutlets, abalone and oysters.

dsc07158.JPG

The second phase centers on the soup base.  A small gadget under the right side of the table shows temperature options.  Place the temperature to the boiling point of 150 degrees.  When the water starts producing big bubbles, it signifies the start of the cooking process.  It is vital to know which ingredients go in first.  The sweet corn, yam and fat noodles take the plunge first since it takes longer for them to cook.  For the sauce, Healthy Shabu Shabu provides a special barbecue sauce, chopped garlic, onion, chili, special sauce base and spices.  Simply mix the sauce, chili, garlic, and onion into the special sauce base.  Diners may opt to add egg yolk in the special sauce to make it richer.  You can opt to put half of the spices in the soup.

dsc07171.JPG

dsc07177.JPG

dsc07098.JPG

The key to the best shabu shabu experience is learning how to boil the ingredients without overcooking them.  It helps that you do not crowd the pot with so many items.  You also want to build up the flavor of the broth by knowing which ingredients to put first.  Crabs, shrimps, lobsters make the broth richer in flavor so that should be one of the first items.

dsc07126.JPG

Vermicelli noodles, leafy vegetables, carrots, beancurd, meatballs should not be left boiling for more than 30 seconds.  Candy Hwang advises that the vegetable ingredients of this savory meal are best served crunchy and not overcooked.

dsc07156.JPG

dsc07189.JPG

dsc07196.JPG

dsc07181.JPG

Phase 3 focuses on the meat part of the meal.  The meat of the fish may follow but make sure not to leave it boiling for 5-10 minutes.  Spreading beaten raw egg on top of the meat tenderizes the beef of your choice.  After doing so, add the meat in the pot during the boiling point.  After 20-40 seconds, let the meat cool down in the sauce and enjoy.  The lamb and Angus beef meat that was served were absolutely fantastic -tender and flavorful.  I could eat a dozen slices without the sauce.

What a grueling day.

I’m glad I’m off to this event tonight.

(I’m actually late already.  Good thing it’s only a stone throw away.)

I need something to warm me up for tom.

Busy Bee This Week as August Draws Near

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

What an eventful week this week is going to be for me –the opener for a fully booked August.  Not only are my days packed with meetings, but the busyness also extends even after office hours starting with a Healthy Shabu Shabu event tomorrow at Shangri-la.  Wednesday is the evening of reckoning as I made dinner reservations for 15 pax at Mamou –Home Kitchen, bringing a new set of friends in.  Dining during the 2nd dinner schedule at 830pm, I’m excited to poke my fork in their popular PHP 1,680 steak again, which are their claim to fame as I’ve witnessed through the blogs of Market Manila, Table for Three and Margauxlicious.   Bubba just sent me an SMS asking me to block off my Friday for something up his sleeves.  Too bad I had to decline because Friday was already blocked for the AXN Beyond Trade Event happening at Embassy.  Yssah gave me two invites and I’m tagging him there.

untitled.jpg

I’m excited to have the new Vios released this week!!!  Although I’d still be too lazy to drive even on weekends, I really appreciate that my mom ordered customized plates with my initials on it and triple 8.  I love the number 1 but 8 is my lucky number.

My Hong Kong trip last June was trampled at the start by a stressful week at work during the Eurocup opening.  I didn’t even have time to get excited.  I hope this is not the case this time around.  I have two big trips lined up for August.  One is during the weekend of August 15, which is a trip to Cebu with Travel Factor.  It’s going to be a trip to Kawasan Falls, Bantayan, Virgin Island and Malapascua.  The second one is the following weekend that’s going to be my much-anticipated trip to Macau.  Ready for bungee jumping?  *Shake head until it falls off* No-uh.  Will I be ever ready for that?

Baby for a Day @ Pampers World

Monday, July 28th, 2008

July 26 is another early Saturday morning and the Pampers Event opened the weekend BIG at the Glorietta Activity Center!  Excitement started when I received the invite.

dsc06856.JPG

Imagine a world where everything is big.  Where you see the world in black and white.  Where climbing into a chair is a Herculean feat.  Welcome to Pampers World!

dsc06858.JPG

This two-day event started with the tour of this unique experience center.  Pampers World had its media participants lie down on cribs, crawling through an oversized dining room and walking with giant walkers as they stepped into a whole new world – the world of a baby growing up.

dsc06860.JPG

dsc06865.JPG

It started with Pampers idea that when you see the world through your baby’s eyes, you learn how to make it better. Developed by Pampers in partnership with parenting experts around the globe, Pampers World show parents first-hand what babies think, feel and experience through the three stages of baby development: New Baby, Active Baby and Easy-Up.

dsc06876.JPG

dsc06877.JPG

We learned about the different stages through the short presentation of acclaimed pediatricians they flew in from Chicago.   We also got to experience it for ourselves in the larger-than-life activity rooms at Pampers World.

dsc06884.JPG

From being a newborn in his crib to a baby learning to crawl, walk and explore the world around him, Pampers World brings to life the brand’s commitment to understand and care for your baby’s development – it has even developed a special line of diapers called Pampers Stages, which was especially designed to answer the needs of babies at each stage of his development.

dsc06887.JPG

The Pampers Stages line includes New Baby, Active Baby and Easy-Ups variants. Pampers Stages New Baby cares for baby’s delicate skin with the softest ever cottony cover from Pampers, and contains hypo-allergenic lotion and aloe vera extract. Pampers Stages Active Baby lets baby move freely with a new 3-way fit that keeps the diaper snug around the waist, around and between the legs, while Pampers Stages Easy-Ups fit like underwear so diaper changes never get in the way of fun.

dsc06904.JPG

The Pampers event concluded with a hearty lunch at Heaven and Eggs.  The event made me reminisce as a kid waking up early on weekends just to play.  It was definitely worth it.  Pampers Stages is available in major supermarkets nationwide and for discounted prices at Pampers World.  If you want your chance to see the world through baby’s eyes – catch Pampers World on August 9-10 at SM Mall of Asia Music Hall, on September 13-14 at Trinoma and on October 4-5 2008 at Ayala Cebu Center.

Not So Tender at Tender Bob’s

Monday, July 28th, 2008

July 25.  After the Poohkwang show, my mom suggested to have dinner at Tender Bob’s.  I really like Tender Bob’s (Link: http://www.janedchua.com/2008/05/06/mr-t-bob/) ever since I was in college and first tried their potato skins in their foodcourt branch in Greenbelt 3 (before it was renovated).  Being a frequent customer, the attendants there befriended me.  The crew was really nice that I even brought them food once in a while –same thing I do with the counter girls from Wrapwich every time I watch a movie.  Since GB 3 renovated, I have not heard from them since.  Maybe 2 years later, Tender Bob’s opened a food court stall in Glorietta 4 and I ordered my usual favorite.  Somebody from the crew said hi.  I barely remembered the face but he told me he worked for the GB3 branch before.  The service has always been great –fast and friendly.  I can’t say the same for the consistent poor service at their Greenhills branch.

dsc06827.JPG

That service at Tender Bob’s almost ruined my dinner.  Good thing I eat fast.  *Chuckles*

dsc06830.JPG

Seriously, the last bad incident here was a few months ago when I asked to be transferred to a booth area once it was available.  There was an empty booth area but there was a reserved card on top of it.  My scoliosis was acting up that night and my back was in pain.  I wanted to be seated where I can rest my full back.  15 minutes later, nobody has occupied the empty booth area.  Another booth table opened up and I was waiting for them to transfer us after getting it cleaned.  They didn’t.  I had to call the attention of the wait staff.  10 minutes passed by and still they haven’t gotten back with an answer if they can transfer us.  I called their attention again and they said they couldn’t transfer me anymore because the newcomer is getting it.

dsc06831.JPG

After finishing our meal, I had to call the attention of 2 wait staff who already drew my ire.  They were just waiting for me to finish what I had to say.  I had to call the attention of the manager, who wasn’t much of help either as he looked lost as to what to do.  2 months ago, my mom invited to eat here.  Bubba and I looked at each other and I shrugged.  Service was bad again.  Drinks took a while to get to us and other little strains but we overlooked it as we just enjoyed each other’s company, making fun of Joyce.

dsc06846.JPG

When my mom said T-Bob’s, I was really about to say no.  But gave it another try since she was paying anyway.  I really regretted not saying no as the whole dining experience is ruined by slow, inefficient and frowning service.  Bob, the waiter, who continues to get dismal ratings from diners, still disappointed me with not getting back to us with another bowl or the drinks.  When Bubba asked him to wrap our untouched mushroom soup and potato skins, he gave a look and a curt nod that says “what an additional work for me.”  Bubba is naturally patient especially with poor customer service.  He doesn’t want to waste time being nit picky, but when I saw his face and he muttered, “wow, sorry ha.” I knew he was disappointed by Bob’s attitude.  That was the last straw for me.  When Bob gave us our bill, I had to point out to him that dining there with him around frowning at every customer makes for bad dining experience.

dsc06838.JPG

I was hoping to say something like, “I’m sure you’re having a rough day as I am, but I came here today cause maybe just maybe I can get some friendly smiles from here, cause I heard service was pretty darn good here.” But I realize, I’ve never heard of any one say that T Bob’s has good service.  Tsk-tsk, that Bob guy is a poor representation of Tender Bob’s, to think that he carries the same name.

On the Table:

Mushroom Soup (2) PHP 100

 Potato Skins PHP

Porterhouse Steak Hungry Serving PHP 270

dsc06828.JPG

Tenderloin Steak Hungry Serving PHP 270

 3 Cheese Burger PHP 190 (?)

dsc06834.JPG

I was so disappointed that I forgot to even say anything about the food.  The Porterhouse I had this time around was tender and cooked just the way I want it -Medium-well.  My mom very much enjoyed her Tenderloin steak.  Bubba finished his 3 cheese burger without even letting me have a taste.

The Poohkwang Show: Back by Demand

Monday, July 28th, 2008

July 25.  Two days ago, Bubba asked me to block off my Friday evening schedule.  It was supposed to be a dinner date.  I asked if I had to dress up because I don’t usually dress up for work.  740pm, Bubba finally arrives at my office.  I was surprised when I entered the Endeavor and saw my mom grinning at the backseat.  Hmm… okay, dinner was with my mom.

dsc06797.JPG

Bubba told me that dinner was going to be in Makati area.  When he turned towards Greenhills, my mind started flying off to where we were actually eating.  My Makati guesses of La Tienda, Swiss Inn and Il Contro were trashed.

dsc06800.JPG

When Bubba entered the GH parking and said I should bring his jacket because it’s cold.  I suddenly sputtered, “We’re watching Poohkwang???” with much elated tone –to my mom’s muffled laughter.  Bubba of course denied.  After a few minutes though of not being able to find parking space, he confessed that we were watching and asked us to go ahead since the show starts at 8pm.  He handed me our tickets and I was shocked to see 2K on each ticket.  How expensive!!!

dsc06793.JPG

Backtracking a little, I never knew of Pooh before the All About Love concert.  The night before Valentine’s Day this year, Bubba had to attend the concert of Sarah Geronimo, Eric Santos, Christian Bautista and Rachel Ann Go in the stead of his boss.  He asked me tautly if I could accompany him since he was given two tickets.  I hesitated, significantly.  Was he serious?”  It took me a while to answer.  He said, “C’mon, it’s going to be fun.  We’ve never seen their show before!  It’s something new.”

02132008333.jpg

Peddler:  Uhm, I think I’d rather go to gym than go to the concert. (I love Sarah Geronimo’s voice, but I think somebody else will appreciate that seat better than me)

Bubba:   I really have to attend this and I appreciate if you can come with me.

Peddler:  (being selfish) I don’t think I’d really enjoy.  You can ask a friend to accompany you or your mom.

Bubba:   (still exerting all efforts to change my mind) But you enjoy music lounge at Manila Hotel.

02132008332.jpg

Since my family and I frequent the Tap Room of Manila Hotel and other hotel music lounges in the Metro ever since I was a kid, I squirmed in my seat.

02132008336.jpg

Peddler:  That’s different and lately all I do when I go with them is sleep.

Bubba:   It’s really important that I go.Peddler:  Okay.

02132008337.jpg

So off we went and were seated at the VIP section, 5 rows from the stage.  The foursome had powerful voices and except for Christian Bautista who had a balladeer voice, the three complemented each other’s pitch.  It was fun watching their production that close.  I was impressed that Sarah does not only sing well but can actually dance well!!!  Same goes for Rachelle Ann Go who had the longest solo segment among the four.  Celebrity spotting included Maja Salvador, Piolo Pascual, Mark Bautista and Ruffa Mae Quinto who were in the same section.  I enjoyed the music and their renditions of old favorites.  I fell asleep midway of the concert.  I woke up when Bubba tugged me to look at what’s happening.  I woke up to Eric Santos’ singing “If Ever You’re in My Arms Again” who approached a crying Ruffa Mae in the first row.

dsc06813.JPG

dsc06805.JPG

Before the final number, there was an intermission act from Pooh.  That was the first time I was hearing about him.  It was a stand-up comedy act and props to the singing prowess of the four, but Pooh was the best act of the night!  I roared in laughter and fell infatuated with the funny wisdom of the guy, who claims to look like Manny Pacquiao.  He also plugged his upcoming show in June.  I could hardly wait 4 months to see Pooh’s act again, but I was anticipating it.  Come the month of May, I checked the rates of the Pooh and Pokwang event, the prices were a little expensive than what I was expecting.  I was telling my officemate about how funny I found Pooh and my plans of watching his show.  Karen went to tell me his bad experience with Pooh at ABS-CBN grounds, where the latter was being really snotty.  I was surprised to learn this because Pooh looked humble and nice.  In any case, I let June pass without seeing the show.  My tight schedule didn’t permit it too being all my weekends were fully booked.

dsc06794.JPG

Going back to last Friday at the Music Museum, I really yelped when I found out that Bubba bought tickets for the show.  It was their 2nd run and a back-by-demand show.  The venue was fully packed!!  Guest celebrity was Eric Santos singing 2 numbers.  Celebrity spotting included Camille Prats and Precy Estrada.  And the night proved to be really a ball of hysterical laughter.  They had dance productions and skits and 90% of it were hilarious.

Dampa Lunch w/ Sabi Friends

Monday, July 28th, 2008

I have heard of Dampa ever since 2nd year college from friends who live in Paranaque.  Gina and Paolo told me a lot about Dampa, where you actually get to buy fresh seafood from the wet market and have it cooked your style.

dsc06642.JPG

7 years later, I finally got to try it out.  I’ve been bugging Bubba since the start of the year about trying out Dampa.  It was going to be his first time too.  He suggested that we bring Sabi friends along since I haven’t had a food trip with them for such a long time.  Sabiclub equals to non-stop eating at the office cooked by Jane, Marlboro team, food trips sponsored by Jonard or Sir Dong, condo potluck dinners and charades.  Yssah agreed with Bubba that it’s going to fun to have a Dampa lunch with our friends.  I scheduled it a month later on what looked like a simple Saturday.

dsc06659.JPG

July 19.  It started early at 9am with a 2-hour dental visit in Greenhills.  Ugh, I can’t believe simple light cure pasta can cost PHP 1,800 nowadays.  Of course, long gone are the days where your parents pay for your dental.  Bubba picked me up at 1130 from the clinic and we headed straight to Roxas Boulevard.

dsc06648.JPG

Mon suggested the Dampa in Macapagal, the one where there is a huge Claire de la Fuenta Signage.  Upon arrival, restaurant ushers rushed to us like bees to flowers, urging us to have the seafood cooked in their restaurant.  Everyone yapped about discounts, promos, no VAT, videokes… while the market vendors close in to sell their products.  My claustrophobia started to kick in.  I frantically looked around for Bubba.  I spotted him a few feet away and immediately walked towards him and grabbed his hand.  We walked towards the fruit stand where it was more peaceful.

dsc06668.JPG

Yssah and Reggie with nephew and nieces arrived a few minutes later.  I relayed to Yssah my earlier experience.  She suggested the Aling Tonya’s restaurant over the others.  We wanted to wait for others before we ordered food so we can get everybody’s input but since there were kids around and cooking will take a while, Yssah and I went ahead and bought the seafood from the market.  The wet market was fairly clean and simple.  The floor was nearly dry so it was easy to go around.  We got 2 kilos of mussels for PHP 100, 1 kilo of shrimp for PHP 250, 1 kilo of Tilapia for PHP 130, 5 pieces of crab (a little over 2 kilos) for PHP 580.

dsc06664.JPG

On the Table:

1 kilo of Baked Mussels PHP 130

dsc06647.JPG

1 kilo of Mussel Soup PHP 85

dsc06656.JPG

1 kilo of Buttered Shrimps PHP 140

dsc06637.JPG

Crispy Garlic Fried Tilapia PHP 140

dsc06646.JPG

Oyster Crab PHP 180

dsc06639.JPG

2 Bottles of 1.5 liters Softdrink PHP 200

3 Orders of Rice PHP 75

dsc06650.JPG

I didn’t realize that the cooking charge can be a bit expensive and sometimes more expensive than the food.  There is also a different cooking charge for 1 kilo v. 2 kilos.  1 bottle of 1.5 liter Coke cost PHP 100!!!  I didn’t mind since all the food that Aling Tonya’s cooked were yummy!!!  I think I had 3 cups of rice and ate 4 rounds of food.  Everyone, especially Mon, kept teasing me that I was really enjoying the food.  According to Mon, the authentic dampa experience is really in Paranaque where the wet market is huge and dining is al fresco.  Aling Tonya’s had an AC.

dsc06665.JPG

Too bad Carlo and Shiela got lost twice and didnt make it to lunch.  Camille came late, 2 hours later and I was the only one left eating when she arrived.  Martin arrived 30 minutes after Camille and I had to resist the urge to eat some more.  I think my appetite was summed from all the times I wanted to eat seafood but couldn’t since Bubba is not a fan.  I miss the Seafood Club, King Crab, etc.  Since I know Bubba doesn’t like seafood, I rarely (almost never) invite to a seafood place.  I guess that day I unleashed all my hidden desire for seafood.  Our total bill came to about PHP 2,300, including food, which was PHP 270 sharing per head.  Our entire meal fed 7 adults and 3 kids.  Boy, that’s cheap.   I wanted to go back the next day and have my family try the Dampa experience.  Too bad my schedule was tight.  9 days later, I’m still craving for another Dampa experience.

Penang Hill

Monday, July 28th, 2008

July 15.  On a Tuesday night, after running a quick errand in Greenhills, my mom treated us to a dinner at Penang Hill.  Since she already ate dinner, she only ordered dessert while Bubba and I ordered meals.  Penang Hill is the only restaurant in Promenade that I haven’t tried yet.  From the name of the restaurant, one can deduce that it offers Malaysian cuisine.

dsc06569.JPG

Penang Hill is a hill resort comprising a group of peaks, the major hill system of Penang, Malaysia. It is located six kilometers from the city centre of George Town. It stands out prominently from the lowlands as a hilly and forested area. Penang Hill is also known by the Malay name Bukit Bendera, which refers to Flagstaff Hill, the most developed peak.

Upon examining the menu, I saw that the dishes are Singapore-Malaysian fare.

dsc06568.JPG

On the Table:

dsc06540.JPG

Crispy Catfish Salad PHP 195++

Crispy catfish topped with green mango with a Thai style fish dressing.  The slight saltiness of the dish and the balancing sourness of the green mango made me finish this dish in New York minute.

dsc06542.JPG

Spicy Crablets PHP 95++

Crablets glazed in honey chili sauce.  I have only tried crablets only once before and it was one measly bite.  Something about crablets’ appearance makes me feel weird eating it.  I was feeling adventurous that night so I ordered one.  The honey chili sauce gave me that Malaysian savory flavor while the crunchiness of the crablets made for happy chewing.

dsc06551.JPG

Hainanese Chicken PHP 260++

This is a dish that I really would not considering ordering since I’m an all flavor girl.  Maybe I’d order once a year but not more than that, unless I’m on a diet.  Bubba on the other hand is a fan of Hainanese chicken, so when I heard him order that, I had to look the other way to hide my frown.  This simple chicken dish was matched with a clear soup, three sauces, and chicken flavored rice.  The three sauces heightened my Hainanese experience, but the chicken meat itself satisfied Bubba already.  It didn’t stop him though from finishing the ginger sauce.

dsc06559.JPG

dsc06561.JPG

Pisang Goreng PHP 85

You typical Asian combo dessert of vanilla ice cream and fried banana, drizzled with syrup and topped with cherry.

dsc06547.JPG

My desserts were Beard Papa’s cream puff and Hizon’s Yema Mamon.  After dinner, we watched the Mama Mia movie, where Bubba and I fell asleep.  My mom enjoyed the movie thoroughly and was still singing Abba on the way home.  Penang Hill is located at Unit 3, Promenade Greenhills.  Contact number is 7253727.
