Elle Luggage

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

After my trip to Davao in 2006, I had to fly to Baguio the very next day.  Since Asian Spirit was the only airline that flies to Baguio, I had no choice.  I wasn’t really too keen on flying via Asian Spirit because I’ve heard horrible stories from some friends.  Anyhow, instead of traveling the long way by land, I opted to go by air.

dsc05056.JPG

I cannot even begin to relive the experience of flying through mountains of Baguio and how fast and scary the landing was.  Anyway, I was still dazed from the flight that I didn’t notice that my luggage had a huge crack on it!  I only found out in the cab on the way to the hotel when I looked at my luggage (most cabs if not all, in Baguio, are FX so my luggage was at the back of the SUV).

dsc05058.JPG

Upon my return to Manila, I immediately checked if my warranty covers the case.  Unfortunately it doesn’t.  I wanted to buy a replicate but it was out of stock.  I was really sad.  A few days later, I found my luggage all taped up like it was new!  I think my dad taped it or had someone tape it so I can still use it.  And I have.  I’ve been to General Santos with that luggage.  But when I was prepping to use it for Ad Congress last year, I noticed it had a larger crack and a small part on the upper portion chipped off.  Not relenting, I taped the crack part on my own with some Beach Bum stickers.  It held up during the 4-day stay in Subic.

dsc05051.JPG

As I hauled the luggage out of the dark corner in my sister’s room, I noticed that it looked like it had Malaria or something.  It really looked downbeat.  I really love that luggage and couldn’t let go of it so I put more tapes and masked the cracks.  I brought it to Hong Kong.

dsc05054.JPG

When we arrived Hong Kong via PAL, the left upper portion had also come off.  I was beating myself up for not checking it in as FRAGILE.  Bubba kept shaking his head and nagged about how he has asked me to change my luggage throughout last year.  I know I know I should have listened.  But the penny-pincher in me won.

dsc05250.JPG

I flew back to Manila on my own because Bubba had to stay 2 more days with his family.  When I checked my luggage in, I specifically asked them to mark it FRAGILE.  The counter attendant was puzzled but she did follow instructions.  I wonder why she was bewildered as my luggage looked like it was going to faint any time soon.  While waiting for boarding, I surveyed the luggage they sell at the airport lounge.  I like Samsonite but they don’t have any flat surface interior and my OC-ness compels me to get one that has.

dsc05252.JPG

When they released my luggage, it was missing one wheel and the whole back part was totally damaged.  It took me quite a while to drag it from the release area to where my mom picked me up because it was making such a horrible screeching sound on the floor.  That incident really prompted me to buy a luggage the next chance I get the free time to go shopping, which was the following week.

dsc05256.JPG

I’ve visited Travel Club in Greenhills and Megamall.  Finally, I found just the perfect item.  Elle’s line of luggage and travel bags is very extensive.  I fell in love with three designs but only settled to buying one.  It burned a hole in my pocket since the luggage cost PHP 9,500.  Good thing I got a PHP500 discount

The one I bought looked like the long lost twin of my old mutilated luggage.  CW was against me buying another hard case but I just love hard cases –and having one in color pink didn’t hurt at all.  *Sheepish smile*

Mamou

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Saturday dinner was spent at Mamou’s with my high school friends.  It’s been a long time since I’ve last seen my PIQC friends.  The last time we sat down for anything was a potluck dinner at my place last December where I cooked new dishes like Cajun Chicken, Pizza Roll and Beef Crispy.  Mark and Anne missed that dinner unfortunately.  When we all decided to get together, I initially planned to bring them to Sanctuario Tagaytay in Metrowalk or Chelsea at Serendra.  Since we all haven’t tried Mamou, I suggested having the dinner there.

dsc05484.JPG

Reservation at Mamou is done differently.  There are only two schedules for dinner reservation –630PM and 830PM, which means that if you made a reservation at 630, you have to finish by 820 to make way for the incoming guests.  A certain Annie sent me an SMS to confirm my reservation and the number of party attending.  She also sent me a second message sometime within the day regarding “Live Maine Lobsters” we can order in the evening.

dsc05490.JPG

CW and I arrived at 645PM.  At Mamou’s, you will enjoy a home ambience and a gracious welcome.  The staff are very respectful (especially one whose name appears to be Francis) but service of the rest of the crew is a bit inconsistent.  As I call on one wait staff, he hesitated significantly since he probably wasn’t designated to wait in our area.  Since Grace called and informed me that she will be late, CW and I placed our orders.  It said on the menu that it takes 20 minutes if you order the steak.

dsc05505.JPG

Sean and Angel arrived at 730pm.  Grace coming from work had to pick up Mark and Anne.  Since it was raining all day and traffic was bad, they arrived at 820PM.  My PIQC friends are almost always on time and are rarely late for our meet ups.  For something fortuitous like the typhoon and the heavy traffic it causes, the dinner schedule quite limits the dining time.  Good food is usually enjoyed slowly especially when dining with good friends.

On the Table:

dsc05489.JPG

Angus Prime Steak (14 ounces) PHP 1680

We already started eating before everybody arrived since I was really very hungry.  I was so excited to order this and have been craving for it since the last time I was at Serendra.  I’ve read so much about Mamou’s steaks.  I heard that even PGMA chooses to dine here with the 1st family.  A 400g steak priced at almost PHP 1700 is quite steep for a non-steakhouse joint but I shrugged and gave it a go.

dsc05512.JPG

I debated whether to get medium or medium well and settled on the latter.  It was served with your choice of 2 sidings.  I decided to get the red steak rice and corn pudding.  I was so excited to eat the red meat and had to resist the urge to grab it with my bare hands.  Patience is a virtue after all.  It was served on a white plate slanted by a small bowl underneath.  The inclined surface allows the excess oil to slide towards the low side.

dsc05495.JPG

The meat was already cut into slices.  My first bite had a little bit of fat in it.  No complaints there.  Fat after all makes up the flavor of the meat.  It had a good charred crust on the outside but it was a bit overdone in the inside.  The steak was well done and was lacking in taste.  I hesitated to ask for a steak sauce because I didn’t want to insult the chef, but since the meat tasted bland for my taste, I had to ask the waiter for one.  Unfortunately, they didn’t have any steak sauce and I was handed Lee and Perrin’s Worcestershire sauce instead.  I asked for freshly ground pepper to spice up the flavor.

dsc05497.JPG

CW on the other hand didn’t complain at all about the steak.  He enjoyed the side order of rice that came with it, while I instantaneously finished the corn pudding.  I really like corn and Mamou’s corn pudding had the right sweetness and creamy consistency.

dsc05503.JPG

Beer Batter Fish with Potato Wedges PHP 255

It was also served on a white plate, 3 pieces of fish fillets in a light beer batter with 3 unsalted potato wedges.  The fish wasn’t oily and the golden crust had the right crisp as you take a bite of it.  CW also liked this dish a lot.

dsc05506.JPG

Sean and Angel ordered two dishes as well.  One was the Roast Pork and Chicken with Beans and Rice PHP595 (To share serving) and the other was the Beer Batter Fish with Potato Wedges as I recommended.  Whereas the three ordered the Roast Pork and Chicken too and Batac Bolognese.  However, instead of the Bolognese, it was some Clam Pasta in Olive Oil that was served by mistake.

dsc05513.JPG

It was good to see my old friends.  Anne kept the atmosphere light and fun as CW anticipated.  I was so happy to be sharing stories with Grace and Mark again, while we were all delighted to finally meet Sean’s girlfriend of 3 years, Angel.  We met with Grace’s aunt, who we all call Auntie, at Cacao after dinner for some coffee.

dsc05519.JPG

Our total bill for 7 heads was close to PHP 5,000.  I resisted the desire to complain about the steak but Auntie said I should have.  It is my right to do so especially if I’m paying a hefty price for a single dish.

I haven’t been inspired lately to write about the restaurants I’ve visited the past two weeks.  I thought the visit to Mamou can spruce up the lull I’ve been experiencing in restaurants.  Too bad that I was really disappointed and I felt like having a second dinner that night.  Still, several good reviews of Mamou from other bloggers prompt me to give it another shot.

Mamou is located at Unit 1C –15 Ground Floor Serendra Fort Bonifacio Heights, Fort Bonifacio Global City Taguig.  Make your reservations at 8563569/09178162668.

Jack’s Loft

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Friday night last week, I spent a short evening with the airtime group at Sidebar.  It was Trina and Jing’s despedida.  Bubba and I went home early at 9pm and bonded with Joyce.  It was more like hushing them both while I watched the Apprentice finale.  I got hungry afterwards.  Around 1030pm, we were headed to Wilson St. with a chaperon named Joyce.  You can actually order Pho Hoa dishes and have it served in Jack’s Loft.

Sandy’s Pizza

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

June 4, 2008.  Right after gym this Wednesday night, we happened to pass by Sandy’s Pizza in J. Abad Santos street in San Juan and decided to order pizza.  A pretty Mestiza in her late thirties greeted us and took our order.  We had it delivered since we didn’t want to wait 20 minutes.  We ordered the combination pizza and got four different flavors.  The flavors were the sardines, tuyo, vigan and curry chicken.  We also got 1 order of Buffalo wings, which we absolutely loved.  I fought the urge to grab the last piece since I sensed that Bubba liked it as much as I did.

Extra Extra! Read all about it!

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

There were no other restaurants I’ve frequented in college as much as I did Italianni’s.  Their amuse bouche of warm foccacia and ciabbata bread always set the right mood at the beginning of each meal.  And I always get an EXTRA basket as one basket is never enough for me.  I dip the soft bread in a mixture of olive oil and balsamic vinegar but someone like me likes an EXTRA flavor, so every visit I’d ask for shaved Parmesan cheese to add to the mixture.

dsc05262.JPG

I love the atmosphere in Italianni’s.  Family style serving meets family knitted crew.  They have always been generous about everything similar to a family treatment.  Whenever birthdays are celebrated in this Italian restaurant, there’s an EXTRA piece added to the celebration –the free scoop of vanilla ice cream or a slice of cake.  I have missed Italianni’s a lot since the last I have celebrated anything here was my surprise despedida dinner for CW with his Asia Brewery friends.  That’s why I could not pass up the opportunity to visit Italianni’s again when I received an invite to their EXTRA event.

Buon Giorno on June 16, 2008.  Lunch was spent with fellow bloggers at the recently opened Italianni’s branch at Bonifacio High Street.  After we placed our orders, a plate of Mussels Lombardi was placed on our table.  Everyone asked who ordered the dish.  We then found out that it was an EXTRA treat from Italianni’s.

All Italianni’s branches are serving something EXTRA from salads, aperitifs, pasta, shooters and desserts!  When something is amiss on your table, Italianni’s has the discretion to add an EXTRA plate of surprise to your order.  Absolutely free!!!  Despite the increasing prices of food and gas, Italianni’s are going amidst the tide by giving their customers more value for their presence.

Solomon Guest House

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

I invited my mom to lunch and of course, the usual tag along named Joyce.  It was a drizzling Saturday morning but I’ve wanted to try Solomon Guest House for the longest time that I could not postpone it any longer even when they had a function ongoing that day.  We had to sit outside despite the drizzle and use the tables inside the tents.

Travel Factor @ Ced’s Crib

Friday, June 20th, 2008

I missed the Travel Factor group a lot.  The last time we were with them was when we met up for Ultimate Frisbee one Sunday morning.  Schedule has prevented us from joining them at the first Caramoan-Calaguas-CWC trip and the recently concluded Palawan trip.

dsc05231.JPG

A TF drinking party loomed on a Saturday night.  It was a hectic Saturday schedule as we came from a chiropractor schedule in the morning, a lunch schedule at Angel’s Kitchen, and the Dialogue at Starbucks event that Fran invited me to.  After having dinner at Pepper Lunch in Rockwell, we headed off to Greenmeadows.  Venue was at party master Ced’s crib.  Maan and I caught each other at Ced’s gate.  Leia and the rest of the group arrived within the next 15 minutes.  I brought Chili Con Carne and Wasabi Chips for Pica-pica and Vodka.

dsc05217.JPG

It was great meeting the people we haven’t met from the recent trips.  I’m bad with names but I think I remember, Ayla, Mitoy, Sonia, Jaycelle, Cha… Okay, my brain just twitched (pain… pain…) ß excuse for not remembering a lot of names…

dsc05234.JPG

Too bad we had to leave early because Chris had to pick up his parents from the airport.  But I cannot wait for the Calaguas trip!!!

Bollywood

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

I had a lunch buffet at Bollywood, Greenbelt 3 in August 2006.  Found the photos in my archives.  I’m craving for Bollywood right now…

dsc07614.JPG

It was around PHP545++ that time.  Even if the Indian food had a commercial taste than authentic, I loved it!!!  I stuffed my mouth with loads of samosas, tikka, curry, kofta and thier soft naan…
